Real Estate Broker 514-299-3307 [email protected] www.jeanniemoosz.com 12 – WESTMOUNT INDEPENDENT – March 4, 2014 Spring is coming! Nests, get ready Photos: Ralph Thompson

It didn’t feel like it last week, but spring is around the corner and the wildlife of Westmount will be back (or more active) once the warmer weather comes. Some nests survive the winters and are re-used from year to year, including squir - rel nests, which also tend to be higher in the trees. Here are some photos we found of past and future nests.

A small nest, right, spotted on the northwest corner of Roslyn and Westmount Ave. It could be a goldfinch, sparrow or robin nest.

Wasps’ nests are a common sight around Westmount, often hanging at the ends of exposed tree branches. A queen wasp chews up wood and manufacturers a paper-like material that she shapes and layers into an umbrella. The nests are usually vacant in the winter since the worker wasps die off in the autumn, however queens may hibernate in them throughout the winter. This nest is clearly visible on Lansdowne just north of de Maisonneuve.

A nest of leaves and twigs in Summit Woods, most likely a squirrel nest. The main purpose of squirrel nests, just like bird nests, is to raise a family and protect their young but squirrels will also often nestle down as a couple in their nest to keep warm in bad weather.
