Guide to the Audubon Society Records

Descriptive Summary: Creator: Myrt Jones Title: Mobile Bay Audubon Society Records Dates: 1965-2008 (bulk 1971-1991) Quantity: 82.5 linear feet Abstract: Agenda, correspondence, minutes, photographs, reports, slides, and video cassettes. Accession: 91-08-236 ; 236-1991

Organizational History: The Mobile Bay Audubon Society was established in 1969 by Don and Alicia Linzey, who also served as the society’s first officers. The society was founded in response to environmental concerns in the Gulf Coast region, specifically in the Mobile and Baldwin County areas. The society was officially chartered in 1971 by the National Audubon Society. Myrtle "Myrt" Jones became president of the group the same year and remained in that position until 2001.

Scope and Contents: Consists of agenda, correspondence, minutes, newsclippings, photographs, reports, slides, and video cassettes compiled by past-president of the Mobile Bay Audubon Society (MBAS). The majority of the collection focuses on environmental issues that MBAS became involved with since its founding. In addition, there is organizational information on MBAS, correspondence from the National Audubon Society, information on other organizations, and personal writings from Jones. Of particular interest in the collection is the material related to the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, the Tombigbee-Black Warrior Waterway, the Cochrane Bridge replacement, Save Our Bay, and Myrt Jones’s struggle with National Audubon Society past-president Peter Berhle over the issue of closing regional offices.

*Additional environmental material can be found in the State of v. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Sierra Club v. Dauphin Island lawsuits in the Blacksher, Menefee, and Stein Records.
