Inside Secure Protects New Video Experience Developed by Podop and HBO CASE STUDY Inside Secure Protects New Video Experience Developed by PodOp and HBO THE CHALLENGE Security for a new kind of interactive video app To provide a new type of experience for the viewer, the director was seeking to deliver: • A branching narrative piece • A more elegant, intuitive form of engagement than used to be possible • « I wanted it to be a simple, intuitive experience. » Steven Soderbergh, Director THE SOLUTION Collaboration with commercial and IT group Content protection was needed to enable secure distribution to Android mobile devices. MOSAIC was first freely offered as an interactive app on the Google Play store (“MOSAIC app”). Then, in 2018, MOSAIC was distributed as a linear six-part program by HBO (watch the trailer). Inside Secure created a modular software DRM solution for direct, easy integration into PodOp’s innovative new app. Based on the off-the-shelf Google ExoPlayer, it required minimal integration efforts for the developer while providing features such as: Downloadable solution, always Approved Hollywood- Efficient anti-piracy/DRM updated without any hardware studio-grade security transparent to user or firmware update requirements Single cost-effective solution Provides a delivery migration Path to other innovations - addressing OS, DRM, path to UHD / Premium Video ad protection, strong streaming & device (early-window), including authentication, in-app payment fragmentation Forensic Watermarking “PodOp is changing the way stories are crafted and experienced. Our proprietary technology, tools, and scalable infrastructure let filmmakers tell interactive stories at scale. Inside Secure was a great security partner for us as we developed MOSAIC, helping protect our interactive storytelling format as well keep our innovative content secure from piracy.” - Casey Silver, Co-Founder, PodOp THE RESULT Re-designed content protection across platforms and devices Three years in the making, MOSAIC is an innovative film experience powered by PodOp Studios and directed by Emmy- and Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh. Starring Sharon Stone, Garrett Hedlund, Frederick Weller, Beau Bridges, and Paul Reubens, MOSAIC launched as an app this fall and was released as a linear television series in January 2018. Inside Secure Content Protection Client (previously SAFEplayer) prevents security breaches in this ground-breaking interactive media programming that the Boston Globe calls “the new frontiers of narrative“ and WIRED says “looks as slick as anything you’re likely to catch on cable this month.” Inside Secure has a history of doing first-ever deployments to assist Tier-1 services, helping protect cutting-edge streaming content on new devices..

Gaby Darbyshire, Gawker Media’s chief operating officer, told the New York Observer that Jezebel “has received more complaints per year than any other [Gawker media] site,” while Gawker’s founder, Nick Denton, told the New York Times that it was no longer seen by advertisers as “a cute new entrant” on the blogging scene. The spat with The Daily Show began with a report by the site’s Irin Carmon on the program’s hiring policies, which highlighted the lack of women in senior writing or on-air positions and argued that it was “a boys’ club where women’s contributions are often ignored and dismissed”. Although The Daily Show had declined to comment for Carmon’s original piece, a visibly flustered Stewart attempted to address the issue a week later stating: “Jezebel thinks I’m a sexist prick.” In the days that followed The Daily Show released an open letter rebutting Carmon’s report titled “Dear People Who Don’t Work Here” and signed by more than 30 female employees.

Program implementation was divided between the County and the MCEDC. I. Background and Summary The COVID-19 pandemic has created an uneven recession with certain industry sectors more impacted than others. Hospitality, leisure, restaurants, and retail businesses have seen the largest decline in economic activity. Much of this decline is due to the State and County health orders that restrict gathering size to limit the spread of the virus. While there was some expectation that the health orders and restrictions would be short-term measures, the reality is the pandemic has required that these orders remain in place for many months. The Council created many new business assistance programs for the impacted industry sectors to respond to this uneven recession. These new programs were funded and administered by the County or its partners. This memo provides a summary for each program implemented and includes detailed program information in the attachments. Table 1 provides an overview of all the programs included in this report.
