Eine vergleichende Betrachtung Die Studie widmet sich dem typologischen Vergleich zweier aktivistischer Zeitschriften auf der Grundlage des Materials der Berliner Aktion (1911/1932) und der Budapester Tett (Die Tat, 1915/16) bzw0 deren Nachfolgerin Ma (Heute, 1916/1925) in der Zeit vor 192o. Stephanie Barron, “Introduction” to Barron (ed.), German Expressionism: The Second Generation (Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1988): 10-37. The notion that all the significant achievements of German Expressionism occurred before 1914 is a familiar one. Until recently most scholars and almost all exhibitions of German Expressionist work have drawn the line with the 1913 dissolution of Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Berlin or the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Peter Selz’s pioneering study German Expressionist Painting, published in 1957, favored 1914 as a terminus as did Wolf-Dieter Dube’s Expressionism, which appeared in 1977. It is true that by 1914 personal differences had led the Brücke artists to dissolve their association, and Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) had disintegrated when Wassily Kandinsky returned from Munich to Russia and Franz Marc volunteered for war service. Other artists’ associations also broke up when their members were drafted. Thus, the outbreak of the war has provided a convenient endpoint for many historians, who see the postwar artistic activities of Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Kathe Kollwitz, and others as individual, not group responses and describe the 1920s as the period of developments at the Bauhaus in Weimar or of the growing popularity of Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). The years 1915-25 have been lost, or certainly not adequately defined, as a coherent and potent, albeit brief, idealistic period in the evolution of German Expressionism. More recent scholarship, including Dube’s Expressionists and Expressionism (1983) and Donald E. Gordon’s Expressionism- Art and Idea (1987), sees the movement as surviving into the 1920s. -

Studia theodisca ISSN 2385-2917 Maurizio Pirro (Bari) «Wenn sich nach dem Werther die Leute totschießen, so ist das Buch gut; wenn sie auf andere schießen, besser»* L’arte come pratica di costruzione del futuro in Ludwig Rubiner Abstract Both as essay writer and poet Ludwig Rubiner (1881-1920) focuses on art as a revolution- ary practice. He conceives critical understanding of reality as a first step in a radical change of social conditions, which can be seen as the result of an artist’s specific attitude in evoking new worlds. This implies that only a non-realistic art can be politically successful, because it refers to a future horizon without restricting itself to describing the political situation of the time. In this paper, I analyze Rubiner’s strongly utopic art concept involving some typical categories of expressionistic literature like “Geist”, “Gemeinschaft”, “Katastrophe”. Bisognerà decidersi a emancipare una volta per tutte la storiografia della “Klassische Moderne” dall’alternativa tra simbolismo ed espressionismo. Al di là di alcuni comuni presupposti poetologici (primo fra tutti l’idea che le pratiche estetiche abbiano la funzione di ricucire la frattura tra il mondo e le forme della sua percezione, riassorbendo attraverso complessi rituali di invenzione lo spazio vuoto tra la superficie della realtà e il livello di verità profonda nascosto sotto quella superficie), è la natura stessa del campo let- terario di lingua tedesca nel primo ventennio del Novecento a rendere vana e inservibile una divisione netta tra i due movimenti. Oh, sacred struggle between the left and the right, on This Day and on the Day of Judgment, I stand on the far left, the very far left. Be‑ cause, only a terrible cry against Nonsense can accelerate the whisper of a new Sense. It was with this paragraph that August Cesarec ended his manifesto ‘Two Orientations’, published in the second issue of the “bimonthly for all cultural problems” Plamen (Zagreb, 1919; 15 issues in total), which he co‑edited with Miroslav Krleža. With a strong dose of revolutionary euphoria and ex‑ pressionistic messianic pathos, the manifesto demonstrated the ideational and political platform of the magazine, founded by the two avant‑garde writers from Zagreb, activists of the left wing of the Social Democratic Party of Croatia, after the October Revolution and the First World War. It was the struggle between the two orientations, the world social revolution led by Bolshevik Russia on the one hand, and the world of bourgeois counter‑revolution led by the Entente Forces on the other, that was for Cesarec pivot‑ al in determining the future of Europe and mankind, and therefore also of the newly founded Kingdom of Serbs, Cro‑ ats and Slovenes (Kingdom of SCS), which had allied itself with the counter‑revolutionary bloc. -

In 1937 the National Socialists staged the most virulent attack ever mounted against modern art with the opening on July 19 in Munich of the Entartete Kunst (Degenerate art) exhibition, in which were brought together more than 650 important paintings, sculptures, prints, and books that had until a few weeks earlier been in the possession of thirty-two German public museum collections. The works were assembled for the purpose of clarifying for the German public by defamation and derision exactly what type of modern art was unacceptable to the Reich, and thus “un-German.” During the four months Entartete Kunst was on view in Munich it attracted more than two million visitors, over the next three years it traveled throughout Germany and Austria and was seen by nearly one million more On most days twenty thousand visitors passed through the exhibition, which was free of charge; records state that on one SundayAugust 2, 1937-thirty- six thousand people saw it.1 The popularity of Entartete Kunst has never been matched by any other exhibition of modern art. According to newspaper accounts, five times as many people visited Entartete Kunst as saw the Grosse Deutsche Kunstaussiellung (Great German art exhibition), an equally large presentation of Nazi-approved art that had opened on the preceding day to inaugurate Munich's Haus der Deutschen Kunst (House of German art), the first official building erected by the National Socialists. -

Fatal Symbiosis: Modernism and World War I In 1909, Ezra Pound, standing on a chair in a London cafe and assuming the persona of the Troubador poet and wanior Betrans de Born, declaimed the following lines from his new poem, "Sestina: Altaforte": Damn it all! all this our South stinks peace. There's no sound like to swords swords opposing, No cry like the battle's rejoicing When our elbows and swords drip the crimson. Hell grant soon we hear again the swords clash! Hell blot black for alway the thought "Peace"! That same year, in Paris, Filippo Marinetti published the "Foundation Manifesto" of Futurism on the front page of Le Figaro, part of which declares: "We will glorify war-the world's only hygiene-militarism, patriotism, the destructive gesture of freedom-bringers. Except in struggle, there is no more beauty. No work without an aggressive character can be a masterpiece. Poetry must be conceived as a violent attack on unlmown forces . l' (Selected Writings 4142). In the following two years, 1910-11, the Berlin avant-garde journals Die Aktion and Der Sturnz introduced new and highly disturbing images of cataclysmic war and apocalypse in the poems of Jakob Von Hoddis and Gottfried Benn, Georg Heym and Georg Trakl. Heym's "The War" (1911) images the disaster as an awakening monster: He that slept long has arisen, Arisen from deep vaults below. He stands in the dusk, huge and unknown, And crushes the moon to pulp in his black hand. By 1912-13,motifs of cannons and marching soldiers, exploding shells and burning cities proliferated in modernist painting, 2 Wal; Literature, and the Arts regardless of whether the canvas was painted in London or Berlin, Paris or Milan. -

Pannekoek, the avant-garde and contemporary art Abstract Focusing on the Marxist theorist Anton Pannekoek, this article left communist im- pulses in 20th and 21st century aesthetic practice. The point of departure is Panne- koek’s theory of revolutionary mass action – centred around the general strike – and its aesthetic as well as political implications and repercussions. The text then proceeds to discuss the workers’ council as the nucleus of socialist self-organization and the avant-garde’s use and indeed fetishization of that concepts, and ends with a more speculative section on the potential contemporary relevance of Panne- koek’s writings on epistemology, the history of science, and evolution. The “aesthetic turn” in Marxism Discussions of Marxism and aesthetics have tended to focus on West- ern Marxism since the period between the World Wars – with Lukács, Adorno and others initiating an “aesthetic turn” in Marxism. For more information, please contact [email protected]. “Don’t Trust Anybody, Not Even Us”: Kafka’s Realism as Anarchist Modernism Abstract Franz Kafka’s personal interest in and contact with the anarchist movement have been fairly well documented, and many have pointed to affinities between his work and anarchist ideas. At the same time, a growing body of scholarship has documented the influence of anarchist politics on modernist aesthetics per se, primarily in terms of a shared resistance to representation—a project that Kafka appears not to share, or at least one he pursues in a very different way. This essay redescribes the strategies of representation found at work in novels such as The Trial and stories such as “The Refusal” in relation to anarchism, and thereby to contribute to a better understanding both of Kafka’s political engagements and his unique form of narrative realism. -
