(Cont. from page 1) it was dragged for about ten feet and possible stepped on. White said: “I remember being handed the flag, but I was trying to put my gloves on and hold the flag and get the board,” he told reporters afterward. “Honestly, if there was anything, I definitely didn’t mean any disrespect." He goes on to say: "The flag that’s flying on my house right now is way up there. So sorry for that," White continued. "But I’m definitely proud — very proud — to be a part of Team USA and being an American and to be representing for everyone back home.”

One of the harsher tweets reported by the Washington Post: "@shaunwhite way to be classy. You win the gold medal and then proceed to drag the American flag across the ground. No respect. No excuses for this." It just seems that there is a steady decline in our morals and values in this country.

So, what does this have to do with Masonry? Symbolism in Masonry is also important; especially given that fact that understanding symbolism is key in receiving the Light that Masonry offers us. We should treat our Masonic Symbolism with reverence, always.

So, let’s talk about one particular Masonic symbols that we are familiar with; we hear it at every Lodge closing: “We meet upon the Level” Brother Jeff Young of Eire Pennsylvania described it this way: “We meet upon the

Level. All men are equal in the eyes of The Great Architect of the Universe and our fraternal order. Material wealth or station in life does not make a man a better Mason, one over another. The rich man leaves his wealth outside the Lodge and the poor man finds respect and brotherly love around our altar. And when we are finally called to that “house, not made with hands, eternal in the heavens”, we are not sorted out based on status or stature, we are treated as equals, truly meeting upon the Level. But do we really treat all men as equal? Do we have some unkind word or thought about a fellow man –be they a co-worker, friend, neighbor, or even Brother Mason? Dealing with problems can be very difficult, and we are but frail human beings that have many faults and deficiencies. Yet we can still meet upon the Level and solve any problem and still treat all men with respect and dignity, as we search for solutions together.”

How we treat our brethren both in the lodge and outside the lodge requires that we approach a problem situation with a Brother with Masonic principles in mind. It is important to regard a Brother’s reputation to be as important as our own. We take a pledge not to injure a Brother in his person or good name. Masonry values a Brother’s good name to be as important as his physical safety. In other words, to injure a Brother’s good name is as wrong as physically injuring him. It is so easy to let rumors or misconceptions lead us to speak ill of a Mason’s reputation. It is a challenge to maintain our behavior and our words within Masonic code of conduct; but we must do so. It is so much easier to gossip or pass along derogatory information about others that may cast a shadow on a person’s good name than to abide by a high moral code. That’s not to say we should ignore a Brother’s short comings or misbehavior; it means that when we hear derogatory information about a Brother we should vet the information by examining it in the light of truth and treat the situation as if it were our reputation in question. If the Masonic code of conduct was easy there would be no need for Masonry. But the need for Masonry to teach men how to be better men is essential to a better world. We must demonstrate Masonic virtues in our words as well as in our actions to prove to the world that to be a Mason means that we live by a higher standard, a standard worthy of imitation. In a society where our morals and values are slipping away, we must maintain our obligation as Masons to demonstrate to others a code of conduct that can bring back to this country those morals and values that have made this country great.

Not only is April “Public Schools Month for California Masons, but as Wor. Markel mentioned, will have a presentation during our Stated Meeting dinner by Jennifer Tomasian, Principal of the Paloma Valley High School. Please come prepared to meet her and don’t worry – no one has to “stay after school”. We will also hear some information about the scholarship program that Menifee Valley Lodge sponsors.

During the 1960s, Hampton's groups were in decline; he was still performing what had succeeded for him earlier in his career. He did not fare much better in the 1970s, though he recorded actively for his Who's Who in Jazz record label, which he founded in 1977/1978. Beginning in February 1984, Hampton and his band played at the . University of Idaho's annual jazz festival, which was renamed the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival the following year. In 1987 the UI's school of music was renamed for Hampton, the first university music school named for a jazz musician. Hampton remained active until a stroke in Paris in 1991 led to a collapse on stage. That incident, combined with years of chronic arthritis, forced him to cut back drastically on performances. However, he did play at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2001 shortly before his death. Brother Hampton died on August 31, 2002 was interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery, The Bronx, New, York City, immediately adjacent to both Miles Davis and Duke Ellington's graves.

April Is Public Schools Month

In 1920, as California's public schools struggled to survive teacher shortages, California Masons led a community response: The fraternity proclaimed Public Schools Week, rallying communities in support of schools and raising needed funds to improve the system. Today, we continue that tradition with Public Schools Month. During the month of April, lodges throughout California conduct special recognitions in support of public schools. Public Schools Month Kick-Off Events California Masons' public school support is lead by our Public Schools Advisory Councils - groups of Masonic leaders who collaborate with school districts, community leaders, and guidance counselors to provide targeted, local support. Each April, they organize celebrations to promote awareness of the importance of public education. Questions? Contact Candler Gibson at [email protected].

Did you know this?

When Brothers Richard E. Byrd and Bernt Balchen first flew over the North and South Poles, they dropped a Masonic flag on each Pole. Then, in the 1933-35 expedition, Brother Balchen tossed his Shrine Fez on the North Pole..

Masonic dates are written "A.L." for "Anno Lucis" or "In the year of Light" which is 4000 years plus the current year. This is because the practice has followed the ancient belief that the world was created when God said "Let there be light", 4000 years before Christ.
