The overall look of the film is warm and saturated using a kitsch colour palette, including orange, red, and pink as the base. The quirky wedding dress Emily wears and her accessories give you an idea of her even before she says a word. The depth of field is kept shallow to focus our attention on the characters and their situation and reduce the attention given to the foreground and background, because our characters don’t care that they’re in the middle of a park creating an embarrassing scene, and I want the audience to ignore it too, until it is mentioned for comedic purposes. Although the look of the film is quite stylised, the acting and the overall tone of the film is very naturalistic. The humour comes from the characters’ conflicts, both internal and external, so everything is played straight, so that we believe all the characters intentions, and we understand them, even though at times we have to laugh at them. As much as there is a lot of dialogue in the script, there is a lot that is unsaid and, by using close ups, and locked off two shots, staying intimate with the action, we get inside the characters heads. The film will be quite pacey at the beginning, as there is an urgency in the character’s motivation, which we will need to feel and a back-story that will need to come across. I think an original score will help to complement the pacing and the emotions, and heighten the tension in the film. Although the second scene in the script goes on for about ten pages, there are a lot of pace and emotional changes during that scene, and also the introduction and departure of Mary, so music will be a valuable tool in complimenting Emily’s emotional journey as we stay in the same location. CAPTURE | 020 7686 7193 | [email protected] | wearecapture.com 36c Junction Road, London, N19 5RD Company No# 05412832 | VAT Reg No# 932367715 I hope people find the film to be charming and witty, but with real heart, exploring universal themes that we can all relate to and are relevant today. People can get pretty crazy and irrational after break ups, especially if we have had our hearts broken, and The Girl In The Dress, is quite simply, the story of a girl who is too scared of being on her own, to move on. It is a film about how easy it is to settle for someone who doesn’t really make you happy, because the possibility that you might not find anyone else is just too scary to contemplate.

Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Meiosis of Americanism in The Marble Faun Rasoul Aliakbari Such genres as popular movies and video games often contain images of American superiority but this imagery, it should be noted, has not developed overnight; rather, it has its roots in the history of literary representation. To throw some light on this background, this paper emphasizes political reading of literary texts. In particular, I aim to provide a political response to a poetic dilemma that The Marble Faun (1860) features. In the preface to The Marble Faun, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–64) professes his intention to set his new novel in Italy, which he views as the proper land for Romance, “as a sort of poetic or faery precinct” (viii). The American novelist downplays his native land as inappropriate for his narrative, as it possesses “no shadow, no mystery, no picturesque and gloomy wrong, nor anything but a commonplace prosperity” (viii).

For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion – bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street – but after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. • Masculinity in Comic Midlife Crisis in Michael Winterbottom's Trip Series
139 LUCIA KRÄMER The Imitation Competition: Masculinity in Comic Midlife Crisis in Michael Winterbottom's Trip Series "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey." (S1E5)1 1. Introduction Although the comedy programme examined in this article is simply, and somewhat self-deprecatingly, called The Trip (2010-), rather than 'The Journey' or some other title with more gravitas, the implications of the overarching metaphor are independent of genre. The geographical journey evokes the theme of the journey of life: its phases; the events, obstacles and detours on the way; the persons encountered during the journey, as well as its inevitable destination, i.e. death. This article examines how Michael Winterbottom's Trip series uses this metaphor to present its two middle-aged male protagonists – played by the British comedy stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fictionalised versions of themselves2 – in a way that combines the ridiculous with the absurd by evoking what Martin Esslin, in his seminal book on The Theatre of the Absurd, called a "sense of metaphysical anguish at the absurdity of the human condition," fuelled by the "senselessness of life" (1980, 23-24) and the elusiveness of a sense of self. In fact, the statement from the character of Steve Coogan in The Trip that precedes this article self-referentially encapsulates the life situation of its two main characters as well as the non-teleological structure of the programme.3 After a general introduction to the Trip series, the initial focus of the following analysis will be on the show's extensive use of intertextuality and the protagonists' obsession with performance.

BRITBOX STARS TALK ABOUT WHAT TV MOVED, AMUSED AND INSPIRED THEM JAMES NESBITT The Cold Feet actor’s top picks on BritBox: ● Cracker ● Prime Suspect ● Boys From The Blackstuff ● Black Adder ● Fawlty Towers ● The Good Life ● The Two Ronnies ● The Young Ones “The notion of being part of a new platform that really does try and bring different genres together but all underscored by a certain quality is very exciting.” Is there anything you watched growing up that you have great memories of? I first really recall, in terms of drama, Boys From The Blackstuff. I thought it was just extraordinary. And The Monocled Mutineer. A lot of those programmes really gripped me. I also grew up watching a lot of comedy with my mum actually. Fawlty Towers was must see. I was quite young for that but I immediately understood the absurdity, the pain of it, the farce. The Two Ronnies I used to love. My mum actually looked a bit like Ronnie Corbett which was a bit odd! I also grew up watching sport and still love Match of The Day. To grow up on all those dramas and now to be part of it has been one of the great journeys to be honest. Can you tell us why you were interested in getting involved in the launch of BritBox? Television has been very, very good to me. I’ve been working for a long time now. I’m one of those people who people think is the youngest on set but I’m by far the oldest! I’ve been working since I left drama school in 1988.
