  • January 7Th, 2021 DELIVERED ELECTRONICALLY Vice President
January 7th, 2021 DELIVERED ELECTRONICALLY Vice President Pence: The events of January 6th, 2021 will be remembered as a dark day in American history. What the country, and the world, witnessed was insurrection. Rather than accepting the results of a free and fair election, extremists stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ victory. These were not the organic actions of a few extreme supporters. It was a siege orchestrated and encouraged by the president to throw chaos into our democratic institutions in a desperate attempt to cling to power. Let us be clear, as long as President Trump is in office, the future of our republic is in danger. Every leader in our nation must stand up and acknowledge that now is the hour we must draw the line in the sand and remove President Trump from office before further damage is done. We also want to acknowledge the work being done by the Democratic members of Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation in their support for our nation’s laws and the principles of our democracy. Since November, the president has promoted conspiracy theories, lied countless times about the results of the election, and pursued legal action to overturn the will of the people. This culminated with yesterday’s actions at the Capitol with individuals determined to cause harm in a domestic terror attack on the most significant symbol of our system of self-government. Those responsible must be held to account under federal law. Today, we are calling on you to use your authority as Vice President to invoke the 25th Amendment immediately to ensure a peaceful transition of power and to save our nation.

The West Wing Weekly 4.06: “Game On” Guests: Bradley Whitford and Rob Lowe [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly, where it is a very special and exciting day. JOSH: A Very Special Episode…of Blossom. HRISHI: I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: You may know Joshua Malina from such things as this episode. JOSH [laughter]: Oh, man. Is there gonna be a lot of this? HRISHI: How did it feel to watch yourself on screen for the first time? JOSH: I’m almost embarrassed to admit I had butterflies in my stomach when I watched it. HRISHI: That’s great. JOSH: And it wasn’t nerves or anything, it’s literally like I was tying in organically to the excitement of that job and getting that job. I didn’t expect it at all. But yeah, that was like a very special time of my life, and as I started to watch it I just got, like, chills. HRISHI: You had a Proustian moment? JOSH: Yeah, exactly. HRISHI: You were transported. That’s great. In this episode, of course, we’re talking about “Game On.” It’s episode six from season four. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin and Paul Redford. It was directed by Alex Graves, and it first aired on October 30, 2002. HRISHI: This episode is a famous one because it features President Bartlet debating Governor Ritchie. There’s also some stuff about Qumar, there’s some stuff about Toby and Andy, but the real headline is that baby-faced Joshua Malina makes his first appearance as Will Bailey, who’s running the Horton Wilde campaign from a mattress store in Newport Beach.

  • S/L Sign on Letter Re: Rescue Plan State/Local
February 17, 2021 U.S. House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515 U.S. Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Members of Congress: As elected leaders representing communities across our nation, we are writing to urge you to take immediate action on comprehensive coronavirus relief legislation, including desperately needed funding for states, counties, cities, and schools, and an increase in states’ federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP). President Biden’s ambitious $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan will go a long way towards alleviating the significant financial strain COVID-19 has placed on our states, counties, cities, and schools, and the pocketbooks of working families. Working people have been on the frontlines of this pandemic for nearly a year and have continued to do their jobs during this difficult time. Dedicated public servants are still leaving their homes to ensure Americans continue to receive the essential services they rely upon: teachers and education workers are doing their best to provide quality education and keep their students safe, janitors are still keeping parks and public buildings clean, while healthcare providers are continuing to care for the sick. Meanwhile, it has been ten months since Congress passed the CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Fund to support these frontline workers and the essential services they provide. Without significant economic assistance from the federal government, many of these currently-middle class working families are at risk of falling into poverty through no fault of their own. It is a painful irony that while many have rightly called these essential workers heroes, our country has failed to truly respect them with a promise to protect them and pay them throughout the crisis.

ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS: How Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night Portrayed the Sports Journalist as a Modern, Educated Professional While Still Fitting the Classic Molds of Journalists in Popular Culture. By Eric Alvarez Abstract Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night focuses on the events that unfold in the newsroom of a nightly sports highlight show. The impulse of the series stems from the relationships amongst the show’s two anchors, three producers and its managing editor. As individuals, the journalists are smart, talented and dedicated in their professional lives. Yet, despite their capabilities and professionalism, each echoes characteristics and faces problems similar to those of journalists in classic popular culture. They often put the job over their personal lives and struggle when faced with the consequences. But in the end, they always tend to band together as a newsroom family. * * * “Five minutes to air. First team in the studio.1” The voice echoes through the newsroom at 10:55 p.m. It is the nightly wake-up call for the Sports Night team. BRIDGERTON SERIES AS A PARADIGM OF FEMINIST CO-CREATION OF THE TELEVISION AUDIENCE Graciela Padilla-Castillo, Aysel Zeynalova, Asunción Bernárdez-Rodal Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] INTRODUCTION Bridgerton is a television series created by Chris Van Dusen, produced by Chris Van Dusen, Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes. Its first season premiered worldwide on 25 December 2020 on Netflix. The first season has eight episodes, as is the norm for all Netflix series, and a second season is already confirmed thanks to the fact that it racked up 82 million views in the first month of its premiere (Zorrilla, 2021). If it follows the structure of the collection of novels written by Julia Quinn, from which the original idea stems, the series could have up to 8 seasons, as there are 8 different books, each centred on the 8 Bridgerton children. The action takes place in London, around 1810, among the high society parties. It begins with the presentation of the young brides to the Queen of England and the appearance of a gossip bulletin, signed by an anonymous author: Lady Whistledown. The plot, which at first sight does not seem very original, is adapted to our reality, offering original and necessary touches that form the basis of this investigation. On-screen, Shonda Rhimes innovates once again with a choral and multiracial cast, which she has previously imposed on all her series and which made her stand out especially from the first season of Grey's Anatomy onwards. Rhimes proposes blind casting so that actors and actresses are not chosen on the basis of physical characteristics imposed by the script.

The West Wing Weekly 2.02: In the Shadow of Two Gunmen, Part II Guests: Michael O’Neill and Bradley Whitford [Intro music] JOSH: You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly. I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: And I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. This is Part 2 of our two-part episode discussing the two- part episode "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen.” Coming up later, we’ll be joined by Bradley Whitford, who played Deputy Chief of Staff Joshua Lyman. But first, we’re going to start the episode off with an interview with Michael O’Neill. JOSH: Of course, on The West Wing , Michael plays one of our favorite recurring characters, Special Agent Ron Butterfield, the head of President Bartlet’s Secret Service protection detail. Hey Michael. MICHAEL: Hey Josh, Hrishi. How are you guys? JOSH: Oh man, it’s good to talk to you. HRISHI: Yeah, thanks so much for joining us. JOSH: We’ve been enjoying you all season. We’ve thus far discussed only the first season of The West Wing . I guess I’m curious, to start, to know... how did you get involved in the show? MICHAEL: I went in to audition for the head of the president’s detail of the Secret Service. Chris Misiano was directing that episode, and Aaron wasn’t either inclined or able to make that particular audition and I screwed it up the first time. You know, you didn’t fool around with Aaron’s language. It was really beautifully drawn but it was very, very specific, and I stumbled over it.
