  • Capital Dynamics Private Equity Review & Outlook
Your bridge to the world of private assets Capital Dynamics Private Equity Review & Outlook Summary FY 2015 Highlights: Global private equity fundraising continued at a robust level in 2015, although aggregate volume declined. Europe was a bright spot, recording growth in private equity and venture capital fundraising.[1] US private equity demonstrated elevated levels of investment and exit activity. Add-on acquisitions dominated investment activity, with such deals rising to an all-time high2. European buyout investment volume increased for a third consecutive year. Robust acquisition activity from trade buyers and buoyant IPO activity of private equity-backed companies helped propel the exit volume to the highest level on record3. Asia-Pacific private equity had the strongest investment year on record, driven by large buyouts and growth and venture investments in rapidly growing technology start-ups. The US and European venture markets saw the strongest investment years post the dot-com bubble, driven by large funding rounds from unconventional investors. Unicorns emerged in the US at a record pace but funding became more cautious, as a result of correction in public markets4. In the secondary market, given the high valuations and uncertain macroeconomic conditions, we expect a growing price gap between top-tier and lower quality GPs and funds. We also expect lower interest in funds with significant public exposure and high single-company concentrations. 1,2,3,4 AVCJ, Bloomberg,Dow Jones VentureSource, EMPEA, Preqin, Thomson One Capital Dynamics Private Equity Review & Outlook | Summary | FY 2015 2 US buyout In brief In 2015, US PE demonstrated elevated levels of investment and exit activity.

Paradise Papers: Russia funded Facebook and Twitter investments The Guardian through Kushner associate, Nov. 05, 2017 Paradise Papers Russia funded Facebook and Twitter investments through Kushner associate Institutions with close links to Kremlin financed stakes through business associate of Trump‟s son-in-law, leaked files reveal by Jon Swaine and Luke Harding | November 5, 2017 Two Russian state institutions with close ties to Vladimir Putin funded substantial investments in Twitter and Facebook through a business associate of Jared Kushner, leaked documents reveal. The investments were made through a Russian technology magnate, Yuri Milner, who also holds a stake in a company co-owned by Kushner, Donald Trump‟s son-in- law and senior White House adviser. The discovery is likely to stir concerns over Russian influence in US politics and the role played by social media in last year‟s presidential election. It may also raise new questions for the social media companies and for Kushner. https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/nov/05/russia-funded-facebook- Page 1 twitter-investments-kushner-associate Paradise Papers: Russia funded Facebook and Twitter investments The Guardian through Kushner associate, Nov. 05, 2017 Alexander Vershbow, who was a US ambassador to Russia under George W Bush and to Nato under Bill Clinton, said the Russian state institutions were frequently used as “tools for Putin‟s pet political projects”. Vershbow said the findings were concerning in light of efforts by Moscow to disrupt US democracy and public debate. “There clearly was a wider plan, despite Putin‟s protestations to the contrary,” he said. The investments are detailed in the Paradise Papers, a trove of millions of leaked documents reviewed by the Guardian, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and other partners, along with other previously unreported filings.

  • Best-In-Class Your Guide to the Winners of the PE Asia Awards 2011
PE ASIA • march 2012 • Issue 58 Best-in-class Your guide to the winners of the PE Asia Awards 2011 As we honour 2011’s stand-out firms, transactions and advisors, one thing that’s clear is Asia’s homegrown private equity groups are by no means taking a backseat to global private equity franchises. With only a couple of exceptions – including Bain Capital’s win as ‘Firm of the year in Japan’ – nearly all of the awards for private equity fund managers went to local specialists including CITIC Private Equity Funds Management, Archer Capital and Everstone Capital, to name a few. In many cases, older, global firms were runners-up. These awards, voted on by thousands of PE Asia readers, showcase the firms that have – in the eyes of their peers – excelled and set the industry benchmark. The results of these awards also reflect some of the wider themes prevalent in the world of Asian private equity during 2011. Chinese deals, for example, were what readers had in mind when thinking about the region’s most impressive deal and exit of 2011. And those winning transactions involved a number of large global players – a reminder that even if Asia’s domestic fund managers are indeed maturing and rising in prominence, Western firms still comprise a key part of the Asian private equity landscape and are expected to continue to do so as they scour the region for outsized return opportunities. In the following pages, we’ve worked to provide some detail on why these firms, more so than others, were voted best-in-class by their peers.

  • Political Spending by Foreign-Influenced Corporations LD 479, 194, 641
Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs Maine State Legislature RE: Political spending by foreign-influenced corporations LD 479, 194, 641 March 12, 2021 Dear Members of the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee, I am the Legal Director of Free Speech For People, a national non- partisan non-profit organization, that works to renew our democracy and to limit the influence of money in our elections. In particular, we played a critical role in helping draft, provide legal support, and advocate for the nation’s first two enacted laws (in Seattle, Washington and St. Petersburg, Florida) that limit political spending by partially- foreign-owned (foreign-influenced) corporations. I write now to provide our recommendations on three Maine bills: LD 479 (Bailey/Miramant), LD 194 (Bennett/Grohoski), and LD 641 (Riseman). A brief list of our recommendations is below, followed by a more detailed explanation of some of them. I. Recommendations • We believe that LD 479 provides the most productive starting point. LD 194 and LD 641 should be subsumed or merged into it. • In LD 479, the definition of “foreign national” in §§ 1006(1)(G)(3)(a)-(b) should be revised. At p.2 line 4, change “5%” to “1%” and at line 8, change “20%” to “5%.” As explained in more detail below, the 5%/20% thresholds are drawn from older legislation that no longer reflects the state of the art. • We recommend requiring the CEO of any corporation spending money in Maine elections to certify that the corporation does not meet the definition of a foreign national.
