Exactly a year after his last album, the well-received Construction Time & Demolition, he's back with a new album, Transience. For every song of Wreckless Eric's you remember from his early days on Stiff Records, he's recorded 10 more that you've probably never heard. The early DIY British indie label may have been his entry-level position into the music business, but Eric Goulden didn't stop making music after the novelty of Stiff Records - and his being known as Wreckless Eric - wore off. Forty years on, Goulden is still making insightful music while the original label is but a footnote in music history. On Transience, Eric is joined by friends including acoustic 12-string guitar player Alexander Turnquist, Cheap Trick bassist, Tom Petersson, Amy Rigby on piano and backing TRACK LISTING vocals, jazz horn player Artie Barbato, and on drums Steve Goulding, late of Graham Parker & the Rumour - the first 1. • The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

  • Press Release April 6 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information, contact: RKR-CB (505) 250-3105 [email protected] NEW CD “SHOTGUN” BOB ANDREWS AND SPECIAL GUESTS April 6, 2012 (New Orleans, Louisiana)--Released just in time for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the CD “SHOTGUN” is brand new music featuring Bob Andrews playing with some of the best musicians in New Orleans. SHOTGUN was inspired by a book by RKR- CB (also called SHOTGUN to be released April 20, 2012) which is a curious mix of images of the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods juxtaposed with edgy graphic art and an eclectic short story. Known throughout New Orleans and the world as a keyboard player, Bob Andrews instead plays guitar on all tracks of SHOTGUN for a new sound that reflects a merging of Bob’s British rock and R&B roots with New Orleans funk and blues. The songs are fresh, edgy, and innovative. The music and the intriguing lyrics capture the energy of New Orleans with sultry and vivid flavors of lust and love in a rollicking zest for life. SHOTGUN brings together diverse and talented musicians including Alex McMurray, Johnny Sansone, Cornell Williams, Jermal Watson, Calvin Johnson, and Red Priest. SHOTGUN was recorded at Piety Street Recording by Wes Fontenot and mixed by John Porter. Development of the SHOTGUN CD was partially supported through a grant from the Threadhead Cultural Foundation. SHOTGUN is the first in a series of collaborative projects by RKR-CB to promote New Orleans musicians in tandem with a companion book. The next RKR- CB book/CD project, “INVISIBLE LOVE” will be released later in 2012.
