ATHLETICS STAFF

JAMES J. HENRY Director of Athletics

It might be considered somewhat

ironic that James J. Henry should be Director of Athletics at La Salle College, a school that has not had a varsity football team since 1941, for football has played a great part in Jim Henry's life. Before being graduated from Villanova in 1930, Henry received All American honorable mention at end, and when he came to La Salle in 1930 he was named line coach, then head coach in 1940 and 1941. In 1961 he was president of the Eastern Intercollegiate Football Officials Association, and he officiated many of the nation's top grid contests for some 25 years before retiring after the 1964 Army-Navy Game. Football, however, is only part of the story of Jim Henry, for he is a man devoted not merely to a single sport, but to athletics and what college athletics stand for. In his 37 years at La Salle—33 of which have been spent as Athletic Director—he has given of his time and energy equally for all sports. He coached the 1931 Explorer basketball team to a 15-4 record and helped organize La Salle's crew, the first Catholic College crew in the nation. A total of nine varsity sports bring national recognition to the college through his guidance. Mr. Henry has served on many committees including the Eligibility Committee of the Middle Atlantic Conference and Holiday Tournament Selection Committee of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. He is also vice president of the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame, Maxwell Memorial Football Club and the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference. A Professor of Finance on La Salle's faculty, Henry received the honorary degree of doctor of law from the college in 1955. He and his wife have three adult children.

JAMES F. HARDING Head Basketball Coach (First Season) Jim Harding, a defensive special- ist who has guided every high school and college team he has handled to its greatest record in history, makes his La Salle College coaching debut in 1967-68. Harding's brilliant collegiate rec- ord includes one season at Loyola University (New Orleans) and three years as coach and Athletic Director at Gannon College, Erie, Pa. His Loyola team had a 16-8 regular-season record, including a third place finish in the Sugar Bowl Tourney, then lost to Oklahoma State in the first round of the NCAA Tourney. At Gannon, Harding's three year record (1963 to 1966) was 57-12 including consecutive 20-3 seasons his last two years. His 1964-65 squad was ranked sixth nationally among the small colleges. He was chosen "Coach of the Year in Pennsylvania Colleges" the following year as Gannon finished seventh nationally. Two of his Gannon teams finished in the nation's top ten defensively. His last game as coach of the Golden Knights was a historic five over- time marathon against Youngstown which Gannon won, 72-71, tying the national collegiate record for length of a game. Harding, 38, resigned from Gannon in 1966 to accept an executive business position in Milwaukee. However, he remained active in basket- ball during the 1966-67 campaign as a scout, clinic speaker and tele- vision commentator. His overall high school coaching record was 107-23 including a brilliant 56-9 mark at Marquette University High School, Milwaukee. His 1953-54 squad won the state championship and was ranked second in the nation with a 26-1 record. A native of Clinton, Iowa, where he was an All-State star in basketball and football, Harding competed in the same sports at the University of Iowa before graduating in 1949. Later, he played one year of pro basketball at Wilkes-Barre, of the old American Basketball Association. He also has a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Iowa. Harding and his wife, Marycee, reside in Northeast Philadelphia.

WILLIAM H. WILSON Freshman Basketball Coach (First Season)

Bill Wilson, who was Jim Harding's assistant and freshman basketball coach at Gannon College, is making his full-time debut in the same posi- tions at La Salle this season. Wilson, 25. served as Harding's assistant for three years and worked under Harding's successor, Denny Bayer, last season at the Erie (Pa.) college. A 1967 graduate of Gannon with a degree in psychology, Wilson also coached basketball and swimming at a resort in his hometown, Cleveland, Ohio, the past six summers. Wilson and his wife, Stevie, reside in Ambler, Pa.

Loughran Team Physician Trainer Equipment Manager PROSPECTS FOR THE SEASON

By Coach Jim Harding

As we approach the season, it is obvious that the Explorers have three major problems to overcome—defense, rebounding and incon- sistency, and two major positions to fill—a playmaker and a strong post man.

We will miss, of course, the 35 points a game supplied by Hubie

Marshall and George Paull, who graduated. Hopefully, the returning veterans and newcomers will be able to recover some of these points through a more consistent effort, especially in our man-to-man defense, as well as through better overall balance in our single post offense.

From viewing game films, Larry Cannon, at forward, Bernie Williams at guard and Stan Wlodarczyk in the pivot looked excellent, at times, last year. The experience gained playing against some of the best teams in the nation should make them even more mature.

The key to our success, however, may rest with a pair of transfer students, Ed Szczesny and Roland Taylor. Szczesny at 6-8 is big and strong and could give us a much needed lift, especially under the de- fensive boards. He hasn't had any real competitive experience in two years, though, and must regain the sharpness of reflexes he showed in high school. If he works out in the pivot, we will be able to move

Wlodarczyk to the corner and strengthen ourselves tremendously under- neath. Taylor could move into the backcourt alongside Williams. He has been quite impressive, particularly on defense.

Although our overall speed is not quite as good as I would like, our bench should be deeper. Fran Scott, the tallest member of the team, has been improving steadily in practice and will probably alternate with Szczesny in the pivot. Dave Ervin, an occasional starter in the past, Joe Markmann and sophomore Ed Holzer are definite assets in the frontcourt. Sophomore Fran Dunphy and injury-plagued junior Mike

Osborne will be the top backcourt reserves. Osborne missed much of the pre-season practice with a hamstring pull.

Glancing at the schedule, this team will have to mature rapidly. We really have our work cut out for us from December 16 until the end of January when we play— in succession—Niagara (with ), tournaments in Boston and New York (meeting second-ranked Louisville in the Holiday Festival), at Miami (Fla.), St. Joseph's, at Loyola (New

Orleans), Syracuse, at Western Kentucky, Pennsylvania, at Duquesne and at Creighton. .

MEET THE EXPLORERS

(*) Returning Lettermen

* Lawrence T. (Larry) Cannon Junior 20 6-5 195 Philadelphia, Pa.

Larry's 18.7 ppg. average was the great- est ever registered by an Explorer rookie. He also led the team in rebounding (10.3 per game) and impressed court experts with his variety of moves and court finesse. Once against Nebraska he came down the ^^^^± floor off fast breaks and scored four spec- ^fl ft tacular goals and four different moves. He r / had 30 points and 11 rebounds against the Cornhuskers, broke the tourney record for [k| / field goals (14), and made the All Tourna- ment team despite missing the Vanderbilt game with a severely bruised heel. His career highs are 32 points against Oklahoma City and 25 rebounds against Western Kentucky. "He's the best we faced this year," said Western Kentucky coach after Cannon's 26 , 25 effort against the Hilltoppers. "Unlimited potential . . makes plays the 'Big 0' would envy," says Ray Kelly, of the Philadelphia

Bulletin. "Hasn't even scratched the surface of his potential," says Bill Conlin, of the Philadelphia Daily News. Other honors for Cannon last year included Middle Atlantic Conference and Big Five All Stars; ECAC

All East and Big Five weekly teams and numerous All Opponent squads. Regarded as an excellent pro backcourt prospect, Larry made Scholastic All American while leading Lincoln High (coach Harry Silcox) to the Public League championship. He scored 493 points as a senior, the second highest total in the city's history, surpassed only by Wilt Cham- berlain's 566 at Overbrook High. Twice he scored 49 points in scholastic games, and, in 1965, was MVP of the high school all star game at the New York World's Fair. Larry led La Salle's freshmen in scoring with 251 points (20.9 ppg.) and had the best individual game on the team, 39 at Seton Hall. General Business major.

Bernard (Bernie) Williams

Junior 21 6-3 175 Washington, D.C.

Great things have been predicted for Bernie, but several injuries limited his effectiveness last year. Before the season, he developed a severe eye infection, then came down with a sore knee, then devel- oped stomach trouble. Nevertheless, he notched his career high of 25 against

Niagara (12 for 18 from the field) in his second start and picked up 40 points in the Vanderbilt Tourney. He was hitting his long jumper at a 50% clip (53 for 106) when he sprained his left ankle against Penn and missed the next four games. Afterwards, it was an uphill battle to regain the consistent outside touch. Still, he wound up the year with 14.2 ppg. His best game

7 down the stretch came against Western Kentucky when he hit 6 of 8 shots in the last ten minutes of the first half and finished with 18. He also had 23 against Loyola and 23 against Oklahoma City. When he's

"on," Bernie is one of the most exciting players around. He has quick reflexes and rebounds well for his size, and has excellent ball handling and passing ability. He led La Salle's freshmen with 21.8 ppg. including a high of 27 against Lafayette. Bernie made Scholastic All American and led De Matha (Hyattesville, Md.) High to an 82-7 record in three years. De Matha (coach Morgan Wooten) was the only team to beat Lew Alcindor's Power Memorial squad three years ago, before 13,000 at Maryland. Alcindor was "held" to 16 that day; Williams had 13 points and 14 rebounds as De Matha won, 46-43. Later Bernie was MVP of the Dapper Dan All Star game in Pittsburgh. Business Administration major.

*Stanley J. Wlodarczyk

Junior 20 6-6 190 Mahanoy City, Pa.

Stan got off to a slow start last season but developed both his confidence and skills underneath rapidly as the season progressed. He finished second on the team

in rebounding with close to 10 a game and averaged 6.9 ppg. His career highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds came against Bowling Green. With the benefit of a year's experience playing against the likes of Westley Unseld and Cliff Anderson, most observers expect continued improvement from Wlodarczyk. He played at Mahanoy Area High (coach Dave Link- horst) and was the first Schuylkill County League player to make All State in both wire service polls. He also made honorable mention

Scholastic All American after averaging 23 points and 26 rebounds his

senior year. His team finished with a 24-2 record and went all the way to the Eastern finals against Steelton. History major.

Roland Taylor

Junior 20 6-0 170 Washington, D.C.

Roland graduated from Dodge City Junior College (Kans.) this past June after averag- ing 24 ppg. and being named his team's MVP. One of the most sought-after junior

college players in the nation, he made his conference and regional all-star teams two

years in a row. He is being counted on to solve La Salle's playmaking and defensive

problems in the backcourt. Roland is an excellent ballhandler and exceptionally tough defensively. A graduate of Fairmount Heights High, Washington (D.C), he became interested in La Salle through present Explorer teammate Bernie Williams. Sociology major.

8 Edward L. Szczesny Soph. 20 6-8 215 Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

A transfer from the University of Okla- homa, Ed has the potential to be one of the top big men in the area. He's an extremely strong rebounder with deceptive speed and good scoring moves. His athletic and academic progress was hampered by a thyroid condition which is now under ^^JKf ^f7" control, according to team physician, Dr. % E u ene Gallagher. Ed and present Notre 9ffmm V ifi h £ }t fmlmM CtStfSf! Dame f° otDal1 star J 01™ Pergine helped lead Plymouth-Whitemarsh to the state

basketball title in 1963 and the eastern regional championship the following year. His school lost only two games during Szczesny's varsity career. Ed made All-State, set school records for scoring (607 points), rebounding (20 a game) and shooting percentage his senior year. Gen- eral Business major.

David A. (Lefty) Ervin

Senior 22 6-3 195 Roslyn, Pa.

Dave lost his starting slot to Larry Can- non last year, but could return to the top five this season, especially if he maintains the form that helped make him one of the top surprises in the east as a sophomore. The ever-hustling transfer from Salem (W. Va.) College finished as La Salle's second leading scorer (14.6 ppg.) and rebounder (6.5) that year. He also led the team in both (51%) and (89%) accuracy and handed off an unusually high number of assists (87) for a forward. Dave has a good jumper but often resorts to some of the most unorthodox moves in the game for his scores. His career high is 31 as a soph against Syracuse (15 for 21 from the field), but his most memorable performance came in that year's big upset over Brigham Young when he led the team with 20

points. Righthanded all the way despite his nickname, Lefty had quite a few field goal streaks as a soph including 9 straight against Syracuse, 7 for 11 against Bucknell, 8 for 11 against Utah State and 9 for 12 against Louisville. He also helped spark the big upsets over Temple and Villanova with 23 and 22 points, respectively, and made honorable mention All Middle Atlantic Conference. Dave's best game last year was 16 against Louisville, but he made 51 of 90 field goal attempts (56.7%). A starting pitcher on La Salle's baseball team, Lefty's two

year record is 6-5. As a soph, he tied the school record for most pitch-

ing appearances in one year, 12. He was co-captain of Abington High's

court team (coach Sam Russell) and made All Suburban I as a senior, in 1962-63. Business major.

9 David M. Bednarik

Senior 21 6-4 195 Bethlehem, Pa.

Dave didn't play varsity ball last year, but responded with some valuable per- formances as a sophomore when he saw action as an occasional starter and front- A^ \. ^T line reserve. He came off the bench for a ^^^L N career high of 13 points and 12 rebounds ^k i^^ against Bucknell and followed up with a HLl^^^ 12 P° mt reserve effort against lona. He als0 rovided D sparks in two memorable SjL . BVl^^E P '§ HUH upsets that year— hitting three of five key field goal attempts against Brigham Young and getting seven rebounds against Louisville. Not exceptionally fast, Dave is a good shooter (51.1% as a soph) and fair rebounder. As a freshman, he led the team with 19 ppg. including a high of 35 against Penn. Unlike his brother, Chuck, former Penn All American and star -linebacker with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dave never concen-

trated on football in high school although he played a little at fullback as a soph. As a senior, he captained Liberty (Bethlehem) High's basket- ball team (coaches John Howard and Fritz Toner) and made "All Eastern Pennsylvania." Economics major.

Joseph M. Markmann

Junior 20 6-6 208 Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

Joe helped in quite a few reserve appear-

ances last year and is expected to do the same again. He averaged less than three points a game, but made 55.6% of his field goal attempts (20 for 36). He grabbed the key rebound and made the vital pass downcourt to help seal the upset over St.

Joseph's in the MAC Playoffs. He picked up his career highs of 11 points against Louis- ville and 10 rebounds against Syracuse, then came back against the Orangemen

again with 10 rebounds in less than 10 minutes. Joe hasn't played a season yet without being injured. As a freshman, he missed much of the season with a broken left wrist and last year he sprained his left ankle in pre-season practice and missed 10 days. At La Salle High (coach Obie O'Brien), Joe made second team All Catholic in basketball and first team in baseball as a first baseman. He played on the Explorer baseball varsity last year. His father, Joseph G., a C.P.A., is Associate Professor of Accounting at La Salle. Mathematics major.

Then, he missed much of this year's pre-season prac- tice with a pulled hamstring. A smart ball- Mm*, km player with steady moves, he averaged 5.4 ppg. for the freshmen. He started the Seton Hall game and scored his seasonal high of 18 points. At La Salle High (coach Obie O'Brien) where he was vice president of the Student Council, Mike

made first team All Catholic. His father, Jim, is the well-known former collegiate basketball official. Pre-Law major.

Francis J. (Fran) Dunphy

Sophomore 19 5-11 155 Drexel Hill, Pa.

Fran could be this year's "sleeper," according to many court observers. He im- proved his ballhandling and shooting con- siderably last year on the freshman team and will be a top playmaking reserve. He A made 52.9% of his shots from the field and finished second in scoring with 16.7 ppg. He had a high of 22 against Gettys- burg. Fran was a three-sport star at Malvern Prep (football, basketball and baseball), making the All Interacademic gridiron and court teams (basketball coach Dan Dougherty) before graduating in 1965. His best game - >^^^ overall came against Oklahoma City when A 4?jJ he scored his career high of 10 points (3 ^^V # Uk for 4 from the field) and grabbed 6 re- I M jfl bounds. Fran has improved steadily in prac- | | jfl| tice and could be a real help with more experience. He only played as a reserve on the great 1965-66 frosh quintet, averaging seven points and rebounds a game. He made first team All State and honorable mention Scholastic

11 All American as a senior at Holy Cross High, Riverside (coach Don Solinsky), when he averaged 19.5 ppg. and 21 rebounds a game. His three year scholastic career total was 1,037 points. His twin brother, Jim, a 6-4 forward, was a frosh teammate at La Salle. General Business major.

An unspectacular, but steady type ball- player and hard-nosed competitor similar

in style to the graduated George Paull, Ed should see quite a bit of action as a frontline reserve this year. He led the

freshmen in rebounding (87) last year and averaged 11.8 ppg. His best individual games were 24 points against Lafayette and 13 rebounds against Villanova. At Cardinal Dougherty High (coach Jack Pergo- lin), Holzer played two years in the back- li court and made second team All Catholic his senior year. The Cardinals

were 17-4 that year and were eliminated in the opening round of the CL playoffs. He received the Coaches' Graduation Award as the student excelling best in scholarship and athletics, in 1966. He also served as

LA SALLE'S NATIONAL RANKINGS

(Final Season Finish)

ASSOCIATED PRESS UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL 1949-50— 10th 1951-52— 17th 1952-53— 6th 1952-53— 4th 1953-54— 2nd 1953-54— 11th 1954-55— 3rd 1954-55— 3rd

According to the combined AP and UPI polls for the 1950s, La Salle was the 11th best "team of the decade." Since then, however, the

Explorers have not finished in the top twenty of either poll though

they did hop into the rankings for a few weeks during the 1959-60

season and again in 1964-65. La Salle has never finished first for the

season in either poll, but the Explorers did occupy the top rung for a lengthy period during the 1954-55 campaign.

48 \4Sr THE LA SALLE STORY

La Salle College celebrated its Centennial Year in 1963 and now is well into its second century of service to higher education and the community of Philadelphia. The College was founded March 20, 1863 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools and derives its name from the founder of the Christian Brothers, St. John Baptist de La Salle. By 1929, having outgrown three previous locations in Philadelphia, the campus was moved to its present 30 acre site at 20th st. and Olney ave., in the East Germantown section of the city. The Evening Division was inaugurated in 1946 in response to the needs of industry throughout the metropolitan area. Since 1945, La Salle has experienced the most dramatic period of expansion in its history. Present enrollment in both Day and Evening Divisions is over 6,306 students as compared to the 1940 enrollment of about 400. In the last 16 years, twelve new buildings have been added to the campus. Both the Day and Evening Divisions offer degree pro- grams in Arts and Sciences and Business Administration. Eight modern residence halls accommodate over 800 out of town students. A $2 million, three story College Union Building, completed in 1959, includes a Little Theatre as well as dining halls, assembly rooms, ballroom and other student facilities. The $2.5 million Science Center, which houses modern lecture rooms and laboratory facilities for study and research in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Psy- chology opened in 1960. New dormitories to accommodate 200 students opened this September. On the drawing boards are an athletic activities building and a new classroom building. Additional educational areas are located on a 52 acre campus in Elkins Park and on an 80 acre area in Springfield Township. The Army Artillery ROTC program was initiated in 1950 and now numbers more than 1,000 cadets.
