Archie in the military, if you can believe it. Wonderful.By Steve Schwartz, AustinIt's World War II, and Archie Goodwin, Nero Wolfe's confidential assistant, is a major in Army intelligence. After some chores for the army, he is asked to enlist Wolfe on a serious matter. Nobody official can get through to Wolfe and nobody knows why. Archie, who thinks Wolfe has merely succumbed to his congenital laziness, quickly finds out that matters are far worse. Wolfe has gone crazy and wants to enlist as a combat soldier. The corpulent detective and his personal chef, Fritz Brenner, are "training." How can Archie divert Wolfe toward using his true talent for the country? The book is actually two stories: the case that hooks Wolfe and the matter that the army wants solved. As ever with Stout, the mysteries aren't really the point, but the interaction between Archie and Wolf and Archie's comments on people and events. A bonus is a view of New York City at the time of the Second World War -- made glamorous through hindsight -- a place of supper clubs and dancing, strong-jawed men in uniform, and dreamy women. There's plenty of humor as well, including tart exchanges between Archie and Lily Rowan, the woman who has come closest to taking him away from Wolfe, a feud between two senile women, and a man who can't stop talking about racing pigeons. I've known this book for over fifty years. I know practically every line in it, and still I reread it every once in a while. My cost per read by now has dropped to pennies. For me, the test of a classic is that it *can* be reread.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Don't also buy "Booby Trap"-they're the same bookBy Princess LizzzThis book is two stories, one of which is "Booby Trap," which is frustrating if you've bought both. Both stories are from when Archie is in the military. The military pretty much begs Nero Wolfe for his help, and even if he's the best detective in the state, that's obviously a highly improbable and pretty much unbelievable plot. The first story is annoying, because it's the only time Archie treats Lily Rowan horribly, throughout the story, and he also makes her publicly humiliate herself. That part alone is a turnoff, because it makes Archie look like a total jerk, which is not ho I like to think of him. The second story is just awful. You learn basically nothing about the personalities of the characters involved, and on top or that, it's very sexist, overly so (you can't miss it). Neither Wolfe nor Archie are likable in these stories: Archie behaves horribly in the first one, and Wolfe is unpardonably offensive in the second one, not just in how he treats women, but in how he handles the murderer. Neither one has a pleasant resolution/ending. The plots are weak and, in addition to everything else, these are the only Nero Wolfe stories I've read that are almost completely boring ( "Black Mountain" had many boring parts, but it wasn't boring for the whole book). I would t have bought these if I'd known what they were like, and I would not recommend them or suggest buying them. The Nero Wolfe stories where Archie is in the military are, in my opinion, some of the worst stories in the series.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 10th in Nero Wolfe SeriesBy WandaCCAfter discovering the Rex Stout "Nero Wolfe Series" I have been reading the books in chronological order as to date of publishing. These are fantastic cozy mysteries. In fact, Rex Stout has moved up my list of favorite authors. This book is very entertaining and fun. I love Wolfe and Archie. They are so realistic and believable. The setting in New York in the early 1940s adds to story line. Note: There is a good novella included in this volume. Great reading. Called upon to investigate a sinister "accident" involving national security, Nero Wolfe must set the traps that will catch the pair of wily killers responsible. About the AuthorRex Stout (1886–1975) wrote dozens of short stories, novellas, and full-length mystery novels, most featuring his two indelible characters, the peerless detective Nero Wolfe and his handy sidekick, Archie Goodwin.
