VALDOSTA STATE COLLEGE 1 HEAD COACH JAMES DOMINEY

James Dominey is not necessarily a superstitious per son, but he would like to forget much of what hap pened during his 13th season as head coach at Valdosta State. There’s no way to sugar coat the facts. Year No. 13 was a bummer. Dominey and his Blazers suffered through the worst season in 23 years, finishing with a record of 10-17. It was tough to take, and although Dominey would like to pretend it didn’t happen, he can’t, And even if he could, he wouldn’t. “ No, sir, I can’t forget last year,” Dominey said on the eve of his 14th season at VSC. “ I really don’t want to forget it, and I don’t want the returning players to forget it either. None of us want to go through that kind of year again.” Dominey believes this year’s club is faced with a very big challenge, a challenge to turn things back in the right direction. And he knows it won’t just happen. It can’t be done with mirrors. “ The Gulf South Conference is as tough a Division II league as there is in the country,” he said. “ We have 16 of our 26 regular season games against teams in our event to be played during the Thanksgiving holidays. conference. The league has great balance from top to “ Our conference tournament winner gets an bottom. It’s been very frustrating and disappointing, but we’ve got to work through it. I don’t believe there’s any shortcuts, and I think we’re getting that message through to the players. “ I love what I’m doing. The Gulf South Conference presents a tremen dous challenge to us as coaches and to the players. I know I’m looking forward to that challenge.” Dominey is full of praise for his right hand man, reiterating what he has said many times. “ I don’t think I could have a bet ter assistant. I think we complement each other perfectly because we have the same goals as far as our ap proach to basketball is concerned.” Tucker, 32, will continue to be primarily concerned with scouting and recruiting. But he is also ex pected to be on the bench on game nights which requires detailed atten tion to his appointment book. iP S lll: Tom Conley

GUARD Height: 6-3 Weight: 176 Class: Sophomore Age: 20 Hometown: Brandon, FL 11 Dominey’s Comment: “ Conley seems to be determined to recover from a so-so sophomore year, which he was not pleased with and neither were we. His shooting touch is equal to the best on the team. The key to his season as far as playing time is concerned is his willingness to play the total game. He could be an excellent second guard.”

Marlon Jones

GUARD Height: 6-2 Weight: 174 Class: Sophomore Age: 20 Hometown: Gainesville, FL

Dominey’s Comment: “ Marlon has benefited greatly from the weight program, getting stronger and more aggressive. He is definitely one of the players we are counting on heavily. He’s an outstanding player just on scoring ability alone. Like Conley, he needs to play more of the total game. ■ If he does, he could be one of VSC’s best ever.”

8 VALDOSTA STATE COLLEGE Harry Barnett

GUARD Height: 5-11 Weight: 175 Class: Junior Age: 21 Hometown: Cedartown, GA 13

Dominey’s Comment: “Harry is a walkon from Abraham Baldwin with an excellent attitude and approach to the game. He has the best vertical jump on the team (30 1/2 inches), which makes him a lot bigger than 5-11. We expect Harry to add depth at the point guard position.”

Don Latson

GUARD Height: 5-11 Weight: 156 Class: Junior Age: 20 Hometown: Tampa, FL 15

Dominey’s Comment: “ Don has excellent speed and quickness, and those two items plus his attitude are comparable to any on the team. He’s a natural leader and a pleasure to coach. I think the key to his playing time this season is his improving his game within his abilities. He cannot be effective play ing out of control.”

VALDOSTA STATE COLLEGE 9 Walt Webb

FORWARD Height: 6-5 Weight: 162 Class: Sophomore Age: 19 Hometown: Elberton, GA

Dominey’s Comment: “ Walt picked up more playing time than usual for a freshman last year and I think that will help him this season. He worked hard over the summer with the weights and he’s still growing. He works hard at his game and it wouldn’t suprise me at all to see Walt be a very effective player for us whether or not he starts.”

Eric Orr

FORWARD Height: 6-4 Weight: 192 Class: Sophomore Age: 19 Hometown: Jacksonville, FL 22 Dominey’s Comment: “ Eric is an aggressive player who is physically equipped to play that type of game. He’s awfully easy to coach and came on very strong toward the end of last season after an off-season injury slowed his pro gress. We think he’ll push for a starting job at forward or possibly at the second guard. He’s an outstanding shooter.”

1 0 VALDOSTA STATE COLLEGE Mike Brown

FORWARD Height: 6-7 Weight: 148 Class: Sophomore Age: 19 Hometown: Jacksonville, FL 24

Dominey’s Comment: “ Mike saw limited playing time as a freshman because he lacked weight and strength. He has added little of either during the off season which could limit his playing time again. But he could be a factor, especially on defense because of his height and quickness. He has outstanding quickness.” Brad Phillips

GUARD Height: 6-2 Weight: 184 Class: Junior Age: 20 Hometown: Bedford, IN 30

Dominey’s Comment: “I think Brad will add control and stability to the point guard posi tion. He’s a nice shooter with good range and a very smart defensive player, especially on a half court basis. He’s an aggressive player who » al *

enjoys contact. He doesn’t mind taking the charge and he’s physically i equipped to do that. He’s a likely starter.”

VALDOSTA STATE COLLEGE 1 1 Leon Jones

FORWARD Height: 6-5 Weight: 205 Class: Sophomore Age: 19 Hometown: Watkinsville, GA 32 Dominey’s Comment: “Leon had an outstanding freshman year because of his attitude and aggressiveness. And because of those things he should be even more improved this season. His approach to the game is excellent. He’s pro bably the most physical of the returning players and is highly respected by coaches and players alike. Rebounding is his game and he does it well!’

Teppo Uuranniemi

GUARD Height: 6-3 Weight: 177 Class: Freshman Age: 19 Hometown: Thomasville, GA 33 Dominey’s Comment: “ Teppo is a solid all-round player. He has a nice scoring touch and a lot of that comes from the fact he’s always on balance. He takes the high percentage shot and squares up to the basket real well. I think the thing that’s the most noticeable is he has no obvious weaknesses. He just needs to play against good competition.”

1 2 VALDOSTA STATE COLLEGE Jerome Lester

FORWARD Height: 6-3 Weight: 218 Class: Junior Age: 20 Hometown: Rockledge, FL 34

Dominey’s Comment: “ We are real excited about Jerome’s potential. He’s physically equip ped to play in this conference. I think he’ll be particularly effective on the fast break. He’s a very exciting player on the open floor not only because of his scoring ability but also because of his passing ability. He does many things well and will push to start.” Dale Reynolds

CENTER Height: 6-9 Weight: 214 Class: Freshman Age: 24 Hometown: Moultrie, GA H hp 41

Dominey’s Comment: “Dale is 24 and has not played organized basketball since high school. He’s played in summer leagues but has not been on a weight program and lacks the strength right now to play in this league. As he works on the weights and becomes more aggressive, he could become a factor. He has an excellent scoring touch and could get some work at the high post.”

VALDOSTA STATE COLLEGE 1 3 Dale Parker BASKETBALL STAFF

Graduate Assistant CENTER Bret Height: 6-9 Weight: 225 Campbell A three-year starter at Valdosta Class: Junior State, Bret Campbell begins his se cond season on the sideline with Age: 21 coaches Dominey and Tucker. The Anderson, Ind., native ran the Blazer Hometown: Atlanta, GA offense for three winning seasons, handing out 544 assists in 106 games. “ Bret is a class individual who earned this position through his efforts during his playing career here,” Dominey said. “ He is involved in every facet of our program and did an outstan 45 ding job last season. Not only has Valdosta State benefited greatly, but it has been a great learning experience for Bret.” Campbell was married during the off season. His wife’s name Dominey’s Comment: is Sherri. “ We’re excited about Dale’s potential. He also needs to develop strength and when he does and puts it with his size and outstanding skills there’s no reason why he shouldn’t Secretary be one of the best big men in the conference. He has very good hands and a very nice scoring touch. He’s our first Diana legitimate post player since Don Reason in the mid-70’s.” Parker Diana Parker, a junior who played high school basketball at Clinch County High School in nearby Homerville, serves as office assistant and secretary to coach Dominey. “ She is a vital part of our organization,” Dominey said. “Her attitude and personality add a great deal to the program. She is very committed to Blazer basketball and we would not want to be without her.” Manager Mike Patrick Mike Patrick is a senior from near by Quitman who is entering his fifth season as Valdosta State’s manager. Coach Tucker chose Patrick four years ago over several other can didates because he showed the com mitment necessary to do the hours of work the job takes. Patrick has proven his loyalty to Blazer basketball during the past four seasons. Coach Dominey points to Patrick’s con scientiousness, saying “ he has the respect of everyone in the program.”
