When I saw her up there at 14-1 [in the By Kelsey Riley early wagering], I told [owner] John [Sikura] that when Dr. Philip Brown, the founder of the biomedical and you supplement [$10,000 plus an additional $10,000 healthcare publishing company PJB publications, has to start], you're supposed to be 8-5. After making the decision to redevelop his action plan, Brown and agent Johnny McKeever have returned to the breeding stock sales scene this fall with an eye to buying quality mares to fuel a commercial operation. Brown found just the mare to fit that profile in The Aga Khan=s Darysina (Smart Strike) lot 137, and after a fierce bidding battle, he secured her for i800,000 to top the first session of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale. The blue-blooded mare helped to fuel a strong day of trade in Deauville, which saw the average rise 24% from this session last year to i114,796, and the aggregate increase 31% to i18,202,500. The median climbed from i42,000 to i50,000. The day saw 80.2% of horses through the ring find new homes, which was up from 76% sold last year. Fifty-five horses sold for i100,000 or more, compared to 37 this session 12 months ago. AThe first day followed the market trend,@ said Eric Hoyeau, Chief Executive Officer of Arqana. AThere was a lot of depth to this session, which proves when people bring a good mare to Deauville, there are buyers here, and the market responds. The day was very international, with buyers from Europe, the U.S., Australia and Japan.@ Cont. p12 In This Issue The Fugue Headlines Vase 60 Broad St., Suite 100 Red Bank, NJ 07701 Lord Lloyd-Webber's The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) figures a strong (732) 747-8060 favorite to provide European-based horses with a 12th consecutive victory in (732) 747-8955 (fax) the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase, the longest event of the International www.thoroughbreddailynews.com races at 2400 meters. (16 Starters) Overseas Expert Column by Naohiro Goda Both LUCKY NINE and GREEN BIRDIE ran as well as I expected in the G2 Centaur Stakes at Hanshin on 11 September. Both came out of the race well and moved from Hanshin to Nakayama Racecourse on 14 September. It was an uneventful trip even though it took nine hours and five minutes by horse van, and they have settled very well in the barn area at Nakayama Racecourse. LUCKY NINE, second in the Centaur Stakes, and GREEN BIRDIE, who was demoted from 4th in the same race to 14th in the stewards’ room, were lightly breezed for 800m on the grass course at Nakayama on 23 September. They were given another breeze on the same course on 27 September. Both Hong Kong raiders look to be happy and are enjoying their time in Japan, and I believe they are ready to produce their best form on 2 October.
