News From the Pastors

Dear Co-workers in Christ,

Our grandson has words now. That is to say that he knows some words and is figuring out how to associate words with objects and actions. He doesn’t yet use them to form very many sentences but his is always describing his surroundings – doggy, truck, car, etc. One of the most thrilling moments was when he figured out how to say, “Grandpa.” Although he is imperfect in his pronunciation it is wonderful to hear him say the word as he moves toward me for a hug. People who know me know that I am fascinated with words. Recently, I read a novel called The Great Passage by Shion Miura, which is set in Japan and is about a few people who staff the dictionary editorial department at a book company. It is essentially their journey in publishing a new comprehensive dictionary of the Japanese language but the story becomes more about the people involved and their relationships as the story unfolds. It is a description of lovers of words and the love they shared with one another. This is a book about life-long projects and life-long friendships. Miura writes: “Awakening to the power of words — the power not to hurt others but to protect them , to tell them things , to form connections with them — had taught her to probe her own mind and inclined her to make allowances for other people’s thoughts and feelings.” (The Great Passage, 156-157) Too often in our world today I witness people using words to hurt each other. People are reluctant to make allowances for other people’s thoughts and feelings instead choosing to bulldoze their own ideas through someone else’s garden of ideas. The Gospel of John begins by saying, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) John continues by saying, “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) Grace and truth – how we pine for these two things and how often we find it difficult to strike a happy balance between them. Sometimes we remain silent in the name of social grace when we should speak up. Sometimes we speak the truth in such a harsh way that all grace is left behind. Jesus came into the world full of grace and truth. In our world and in our church we have many issues that need our attention and our intentional conversation. Topics like racism, gun violence, creation care, and human sexuality. Sometimes we have difficulty having these conversations. Every once in a while we have to say to our grandson, “Use your words” when he clearly wants or needs something but is having a hard time communicating. It’s time for us to use our words with grace and truth in order to be the people God is calling us to be. As some of you may know, there is a special called General Conference of the United Methodist Church in February, 2019 to deal specifically with matters relating to human sexuality. There is concern in many areas that this conference might result in a denominational split. We will be having some opportunities to let you know what the issues are in this meeting as well as how the structure and process of the United Methodist Church works when proposing changes to our Book of Discipline, the rule book of the UMC. It's time for us to talk – to use our words. My prayer is that we can, as a congregation and as a denomination, have this conversation in the spirit of Jesus with grace and truth.

In Christ’s service, Brian

News From the Pastors

Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

The words of David’s song have been a source of peace and inspiration in my life and I wanted to share them with you, my St. Mark’s family, as I join you in your journey. Although the psalm speaks of the darkest valley, as I start my time at St. Mark’s UMC my mind is instead filled with the image of the sunlit meadow spoken of in verses two and three. Although after seeing how delightfully chaotic VBS can be, perhaps “still waters” isn’t the best choice of words. That’s all right though, still waters don’t do you much good in trying to move in any direction. At this point in my life it feels as though I’m being pulled in a lot of directions as I step into full-time ministry. Summer internships are wonderful, but there’s a difference between them and being with a church for more than two or three months. It’s going to be an adjustment, but also one that I am greatly looking forward to as I’ve been dreaming and waiting to go into full-time pastoral ministry since I was a high school student. God has a remarkable way of leading us. As I write this first letter, it is still June and I have not yet moved to Hamilton County. There are a few people of St. Mark’s UMC that I have enjoyed meeting in the interim, but that still leaves a large portion of the church to greet. My heart was filled with joy when I first learned that I would be serving at St. Mark’s, and as I have learned more about you my joy has only grown. Getting to meet you and come to be a part of the St. Mark’s family of faith will not be a completely smooth transition. I know that I am following after Pastor Ross who has loved and been loved dearly. I’ve enjoyed the opportunities to speak with Ross and his help as I transition from school to full-time ministry. There are always going to be challenges and bumps along the road to where God is leading each of us, but I take a lot of comfort in knowing that we do not walk this journey alone. Thank you for letting me join you in our Christian walk. Blessings, Julia 4

What's Happening in The United Methodist Church? August 19 at 3:00 PM August 21 at 6:30 PM In February of 2019 The United Methodist Church will be having a special called General Conference to deal specifically with matters of human sexuality. In order for our members to be better informed about the issues and the process of the UMC, we would like to offer a chance for education and discussion. Topics to be covered are:

• What are the decisions that are being considered in 2019? • What past decisions led to this special called General Conference? • How does the decision making process work? • Who are our General Conference delegates from Indiana and how can we contact them? • Is the denomination likely to split? • How are these decisions likely to effect St. Mark's UMC?

This seminar will be repeated at two different times to help accommodate different people's schedules. Childcare will be provided at both sessions. If you would like to learn more we will be offering a four week class in September using the book Living Faithfully, Human Sexuality and the United Methodist Church.
