Burton Wins Big 12 Athlete of the Week 18 Alex Wilson Invitational Notre Dame, Ind. • Freshman Rushelle Burton earned the first Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor for the Longhorns with her 24-25 Big 12 Championship Men 1st; Women 2nd NCAA-leading time in the 100m hurdles at the Texas Invitational. • Burton went stride-for-stride with world record holder Keni Harrison, clocking in at 12.65 seconds. Her time was March 10-11 NCAA Championships College Station, Texas slightly wind-aided at 2.3 meters per second to not be eligible for record keeping. Harrison ran 12.54. • Burton’s time does rank as the second-fastest ever by a freshman in the NCAA under all conditions. Week 3 Elena Bruckner Texas Relays Discus • Wasome leapt an impressive 16.31m (53-6.25) for a new personal best. That mark also ranks 6th in school history. Achievement: Broke 36-year-old school record • Wasome finished 4th in the meet and currently stands at No. 2 in the NCAA behind Baylor’s Felix Obi. Athlete of the Week Golden Shines in Houston Indoor • Sophomore Zola Golden grabbed 3 wins at the Victor Lopez Classic besting the field in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m. Men • Golden clocked a new personal best time 11.71 seconds despite slowing down early in the 100. Men’s Coach of the Year: Women’s Coach of the Year: Long Returns from Injury Men’s Performer of the Year: • Junior Kally Long is set to return to competition this week at the NCAA Championships in the pole vault after an injury Men’s Freshman of the Year: suffered during competition on Feb. 11 at the Husky Classic. Women’s Performer of the Year: • Long told reporters this week she missed landing in the pit on an attempt, landing on the ground and poked a hole in Women’s Freshman of the Year: her lung. Due to the air escaping her lung into her body, she was unable to travel because of pressure changes and spent a week in the hospital in Seattle before returning to Austin. • Long also had a displaced rib from the incident that prevented her from competing at the Big 12 Championship. • After getting a clean bill of health and being cleared to compete, Long is ready for NCAA Championships this week and had practice last Friday in her first jumping session since the injury.
