FORKTAIL 33 (2017): 81–87 The importance of Muraviovka Park, Amur province, Far East Russia, for bird species threatened at regional, national and international level based on observations between 2011 and 2016 WIELAND HEIM & SERGEI M. SMIRENSKI The middle reaches of the Amur River in Far East Russia are still an under-surveyed region, yet holding a very high regional biodiversity. During a six-year survey at Muraviovka Park, a non-governmental nature reserve, 271 bird species have been recorded, 14 of which are globally threatened, highlighting the importance of this area for bird conservation. INTRODUCTION RESULTS Recent studies have shown that East Asia and especially the Amur A total of 271 species was recorded inside Muraviovka Park between basin hold huge numbers of endangered species, and the region was 2011 and 2016; 24 species are listed as Near Treatened (NT), designated as a hotspot of threatened biodiversity (e.g. Vignieri 2014). In data about distribution, population size and phenology are virtually the case of the Russian and Amur regional Red Data Books, the lacking for many regions, including the Amur region, Far East Russia. -

Photo: Erling Frantzen Courtesy of TGS BP/Rosneft Pela Lache OKHA SAKHALIN Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk The Sea of Okhotsk is named after Okhotsk, the first Russian settlement in the Far East. It is the northwest arm of the Pacific Ocean covering an area of 1,528,000 sq km, lying between the Kamchatka Peninsula on the east, the Kuril Islands on the southeast, the island of Hokkaido belonging to Japan to the far south, the island of Sakhalin along the west, and a long stretch of eastern Siberian coastline along the west and north. Most of the Sea of Okhotsk, except for the area around the Kuril Islands, is frozen during from November to June and has frequent heavy fogs. In the summer, the icebergs melt and the sea becomes navigable again. The sea is generally less than 1,500m deep; its deepest point, near the Kuriles, is 3,363 m. Fishing and crab- bing are carried on off W Kamchatka peninsula. The DMNG/TGS Seismic acquired in 1998, 2004 and 2005 is shown in green, blue and red colours. Note also the location of Okha where oil seeps were found 125 years ago. -

Temminck’s Tragopan (all photos by Dave Farrow unless indicated otherwise) SICHUAN (Including Northern Yunnan) 16/19 MAY – 7 JUNE 2018 LEADER: DAVE FARROW The Birdquest tour to Sichuan this year was a great success, with a slightly altered itinerary to usual due to the closure of Jiuzhaigou, and we enjoyed a very smooth and enjoyable trip around the spectacular and endemic-rich mountain and plateau landscapes of this striking province. Gamebirds featured strongly with 14 species seen, the highlights of them including a male Temminck’s Tragopan grazing in the gloom, Chinese Monal trotting across high pastures, White Eared and Blue Eared Pheasants, Lady Amherst’s and Golden Pheasants, Chinese Grouse and Tibetan Partridge. Next were the Parrotbills, with Three-toed, Great and Golden, Grey-hooded and Fulvous charming us, Laughingthrushes included Red-winged, Buffy, Barred, Snowy-cheeked and Plain, we saw more Leaf Warblers than we knew what to do with, and marvelled at the gorgeous colours of Sharpe’s, Pink-rumped, Vinaceous, Three-banded and Red-fronted Rosefinches, the exciting Przevalski’s Finch, the red pulse of Firethroats plus the unreal blue of Grandala. Our bird of the trip? Well, there was that Red Panda that we watched for ages! 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Sichuan Including Northern Yunnan 2018 www.birdquest-tours.com Our tour began with a short extension in Yunnan, based in Lijiang city, with the purpose of finding some of the local specialities including the rare White-speckled Laughingthrush, which survives here in small numbers. Once our small group had arrived in the bustling city of Lijiang we began our birding in an area of hills that had clearly been totally cleared of forest in the fairly recent past, with a few trees standing above the hillsides of scrub. -

Projected Construction of a Timber Industry Complex on the Sakhalin Island, Russia, Will Have the Capacity to Process Over 1.2 M
Projected construction of a timber industry complex on the Sakhalin island, Russia, will have the capacity to process 3 over 1.2 million m of raw material per year The ECC (Eurasian Communication Centre) along with WhatWood consultant agency had been tasked by the government of the Sakhalin region to conduct a study of the timber industry’s possible development directions within the Sakhalin area. This article presents the main findings of the study. By the directive of the Sakhalin regional government, it is planned to construct one of the largest wood processing centers in all of Russia. The complex will be located in the central part of the island withing the Tymovskoye urban locality. The project will incorporate a diversified range of production, including softwood lumber, cross-laminated timber products, linear meter timber products, fuel pellets, fuel chips and oriented strand board products. The timber industry takes up a position in the top-10 list of measures for implementing the “Strategy-2035” plan in the region. The economic feasibility of the timber industry construction within the Sakhalin region is apparent: availability of resources, proximity to major sales markets (China, Japan, Korea) and ready-made infrastructure. The target annual consumption of raw wood materials by the region’s timber industry is estimated be up to 1.2 million m3 per year. The species structure is mainly composed of conifers (77% softwood and 23% hardwood species). The annual allowable cut for the target forest districts (Okhtinskoe, Noglikskoe, Aleksandrovskoe, Tymovskoe, Smirnykhovskoe) adds up to 1.9 million m3 per year. The production site location is selected in such a way as to minimize the hauling distance. -

Materials and Methods: For this purpose, the tongues of six adult quails (three males, three females) were studied. Specimen’s observation was performed with a scanning electron microscope. Results: The tongue was triangular in shape with a shallow median groove along the body. The length of the tongue was 1.2 cm. The length of the body was 1cm whereas of the root 2 mm. The anterior dorsal surface showed a relatively smooth surface lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Openings of lingual glands, partly filled with mucus were identified. The caudal part of the body of the tongue exhibited two slightly raised symmetrical areas. A transverse groove separated the root from the body of the tongue. Along the posterior border of the root, a crest of conical papillae was observed. Behind the glottis, big conical papillae were also recorded. Conclusion: These morphological findings could be useful for further studies of avian feeding mechanisms and comparisons with other avian species. Abstract Aim: To investigate the status, problems and prospects of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) farming in selected areas of Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in 14 districts of Bangladesh, viz., Dhaka, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Faridpur, Jessore, Khulna, Satkhira, Kushtia, Bogra, Naogaon, Comilla, and Sylhet during the period from July 2011 to June 2012. A total of 52 quail farmers were interviewed for data collection using a structured questionnaire. Focus group discussions were also carried out with unsuccessful farmers and those want to start quail farming. Workers of quail farms, quail feeds and medicine suppliers, quail eggs and meat sellers were also interviewed regarding the issue. Results: Out of 52 farms, 86.5% were operated by male, 67.3% farmers did not receive any training and 92.3% farmers had no earlier experience of quail farming although 58.0% farmers primary occupation was quail farming. -
