A related mandate is to compile and publish the national bibliography which is the list of material published in the country, authored by its citizens and about the country, regardless of place of publication. The occasion of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary was seen as an opportunity to fill in the gaps in the national bibliography which had been prepared sporadically: 1964 – 1969; 1975 – 1986; 1998- 2003; and so the Jamaican National Bibliography 1962-2012 (JNB 50) Volume 1 was created. Arrangement This volume of the bibliography is arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and catalogued using the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. The Effects of Urbanization on Natural Resources in Jamaica . 44th ISOCARP Congress 2008 THE EFFECTS OF URBANIZATION ON NATURAL RESOURCES IN JAMAICA BACKGROUND OF STUDY AREA Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, comprising of approximately 4,400 sq. miles or 10,991 square kilometers in area. Over two-thirds of the country’s land resources consist of a central range of hills and mountains, with the Blue Mountain Range being the most significant, ranging over 6000 ft. in height (GOJ, 1994; Clarke, 2006). This means that urban development in areas such as the capital city of Kingston and other principal towns such as Montego Bay and Ocho Rios is limited to the relatively small amount of flat lands most of which has a coastal location (see figure 1). Figure 1 Showing a Map of Jamaica and the Various Cities along the Coast Source: http://www.sangstersrealty.com/jamaica_map.htm Although a significant portion of the terrain is mountainous, in several places the coastal plain extends to form broad embayments. Among these, a dry embankment on the south side of the island known as the Liguanea Plain has been occupied by the city of Kingston. The built-up area of the city spreads over 50 sq. miles and comprises the parish of Kingston and the suburban section of St. Andrew. The city is located on the eastern side of the island which is sheltered from the north-east trade winds by the Blue Mountains, hence being ideal for the major seaport of the country- the Kingston Harbour (Clarke, 2006).

Jamaica's Parishes and Civil Registration Districts
Jamaican registration districts Jamaica’s parishes and civil registration districts [updated 2010 Aug 15] (adapted from a Wikimedia Commons image) Parishes were established as administrative districts at the English conquest of 1655. Though the boundaries have changed over the succeeding centuries, parishes remain Jamaica’s fundamental civil administrative unit. The three counties of Cornwall (green, on the map above), Middlesex (pink), and Surrey (yellow) have no administrative relevance. The present parishes were consolidated in 1866 with the re-division of eight now- extinct entities, none of which will have civil records. A good historical look at the parishes as they changed over time may be found on the privately compiled “Jamaican Parish Reference,” http://prestwidge.com/river/jamaicanparishes.html (cited 2010 Jul 1). Civil registration of vital records was mandated in 1878. For civil recording, parishes were subdivided into named registration districts. Districts record births, marriages (but not divorces), and deaths since the mandate. Actual recording might not have begun in a district until several years later after 1878. An important comment on Jamaican civil records may be found in the administrative history available on the Registrar General’s Department Website at http://apps.rgd.gov.jm/history/ (cited 2010 Jul 1). This list is split into halves: 1) a list of parishes with their districts organized alphabetically by code; and 2) an alphabetical index of district names as of the date below the title. As the Jamaican population grows and districts are added, the list of registration districts lengthens. The parish code lists are current to about 1995. Registration districts created after that date are followed by the parish name rather than their district code.

Coram: D. McIntosh: The hearing of this matter lasted over several months. The constraints of time, the unavailability of personnel and the ongoing attempts of counseling and mediation, frying to achieve an amicable resolution all contributed to delays. The parties who were married for over thirty (30) years are now irrevocably separated and are in a bitter conflict over the division of property accumulated by them during the period of their marriage. They met each other while. they were both students at the University of the West Indies, they became friends and perhaps starry eyed lovers as they sought their academic qualifications. By 1976 they were Happily Married. This union started off well. They were an enterprising couple which worked together pooling their resources and were unselfish in their quest for the success of each other and their marriage. Their family increased by two children and they prospered materially. There was great upward mobility. It is apparent that from the material successes, the fame and the fortune, there emanated dangerous pitfalls. There were rifts causing periodic separations which culminated in their irrevocable separation in 2007, from each other.
