Puccini saved his most adventurous writing for this, his final opera, blending monumental choruses with unforgettably intimate moments in a thrilling retelling of an ancient story. Acclaimed Canadian director-designer duo Renaud Doucet and André Barbe have created this magnificent production, featuring the vocal talents of American soprano Amber Wagner in a role début as Turandot, and tenor Marcelo Puente making his Vancouver Opera début as Calaf. In Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky combines the rich, lavish textures of his symphonic music with Pushkin’s famous verse novel to create one of the pillars of the Russian operatic repertoire. The ill-fated relationship between the selfish, brooding Onegin and the lovestruck Tatyana inevitably results in tragic consequences for those around them. Konstantin Shushakov sings the role of Onegin, with Russian soprano Svetlana Aksenova starring as Tatyana, sharing the stage with husband Maxim Aksenov as Lensky. This new co-production with Opera will be directed by Canadian stage director Tom Diamond, with set and projections designed by Scott Reid and lighting design by Harry Frehner.
