Asking for help is the fi rst and most important step in protecting yourself and, if you have them, your children who will also be suffering. Domestic abuse can occur in relationships in which people live in the same house or with people whom you share (or shared) an intimate relationship with. We can advise you whether the person who is abusing you is within one of the recognised categories where protection is offered under family law. The law has recently expanded to include more behaviours that are now considered under as domestic abuse. It does not just include physical abuse, it can include emotional abuse; sexual abuse; honour based abuse; controlling and coercive behaviour; and fi nancial abuse amongst other more rare forms of abuse. If you feel threatened or intimidated there are steps we can help you take to protect yourself (and any children living with you). There are a number of orders that we can assist you obtaining including: • Non Molestation order- this protects you from physical violence, the threat of violence or harassing/pestering behaviour. • Occupation Order - this can prevent the abuser from returning to the property or coming within a certain distance. We can advise whether the application can be made on an “ex parte” basis so you would be protected by the order before the perpetrator of the abuse becomes aware you have been to Court. Breach of these orders could resort in the perpetrator being sent to jail. We can advise you whether you would qualify for legal aid and if not, provide you with advice on our charges in order to help you protect yourself. Don’t suffer alone in silence, book an appointment with one of our family solicitors who will help you protect yourself. To advertise please call 01305 833900 E: [email protected] How do you say that? Spelling This month, spelling! Most of us use technology which claims to spell- check, but not everybody realises that when a word shows up in the dictionary and is recognised by the device - it’s not necessarily the right spelling. Think about an obvious example, ‘the knight rode into the night’. If you spelt them both ‘knight’ it wouldn’t make much sense, but they sound the same and the spell-checker would okay it. Correct spelling can show the correct meaning, but what about spellings that are different just because the words are different parts of speech? (That is, the words do different jobs in the sentence.) Did you know that there is a difference between pendant and pendent? They don’t sound different, but one is a noun (thing) and the other is an adjective (describes a thing). So it’s a pendant which you wear as a neck- lace, but pendent flowers, which hang down. And an independant (who is a person) will be living by independent means. I can only think of one way to remember these spellings - adjective has an ‘e’ at the end and pendent has an ‘e’ near the end. And noun and pendant don’t! But then we have stationary/stationery. This time the noun (paper and en- velopes) has the ‘e’ and the adjective (standing still) has the ‘a’. So it’s e for envelopes and in stationery, and when it’s scary you’re stationary. If you have a better way of remembering, please write to the Register with it!
