The day started out with rainbow coaching. The wind was lacking. Tom tried to find some towing the kids o Mabel Island. It seemed to look like a “no Go” but some ripples started to appear on the water. Five short races were sailed under extremely light and tricky conditions. The Sprint Series will run for the season. First day went to: Intermediate fleet - Alexandra Thom in Splash, Junior Fleet Moss Hopkins and Senior Fleet Jasper Hopkins, who even managed to fall in the water backwards on the downwind. Lower North Island Optimist Coaching Clinic 2017 (Oct 21-23, Worser Bay) This is an opportunity to sailors who are unable to travel to the clinics later in the year provided in Wainui (Dec 2017) and Auckland (Jan 2018). This clinic is held in Wellington. This allows sailors to build skills at the start of the season before the ranking regattas throughout the summer. Spaces are available for financial members of NZIODA. Sailors must be able to independently rig, launch, and retrieve their own fiberglass Opti and have some race experience at Open or Green Fleet level. The main aim of the clinic is to improve the skills of all participants during three days of intensive training and activities. We will have some top New Zealand coaches supported by some experienced local coaches, performing the coaching duties. The venue is the Worser Bay Boating Club; Accommodation is in the sea scout building next door. The cost is $200.00 per sailor, Close off date for entry is Thursday 19th October 2017. This could be a very good cost efficient option for our sailors to have a great start of the season. Wainui Optimist Clinic – Dec 15-19 This is a sailing clinic for similar to above– Green fleet and Open fleet. Americas Cup Visit 12 /13 October 2017. Public Parade and foreshore function. Celina and Team are running a BBQ on the foreshore. Please wear some sailing orientated clothing. We as a club have quite a bit of planned interaction with the team. Rob Burn will be the MC for the event. As QCYC are the host club for the cups visit we have a number of formal roles in the Public proceeding. • Carrying the Signed sails in the Parade. • Selling ETNZ Flags. • Presenting the sails to the ETNZ Team. • Ride on the UTE’s in the Parade. • Manning the Simulator with Tom. • If Time and conditions permit, ride on the Rib’s to meet the ferry and the cup as well as the TV cameras. (7 Sharp) • BBQ on the foreshore. Time table 5.30 pm A flotilla will escort the ferry into the bay 5.55 pm The team arrive on the Interislander ferry 6.05 pm The team will be met by a police escort and taken to the Picton police station. 6.10 pm The parade will begin and make its way down the High Street to London Quay 6.35 pm Welcome/Powhiri Speeches.

    Club Marine Coaching Clinic 5th – 7th April – Mornington Yacht Club Optimist Rob Brewer Sam McKay Sam comes to us from New Zealand with a wealth of experience, including top 3 placings at the NZ Nationals in each of the Optimist, P Class, 420 and Starling classes. He was a member of the Nations Cup winning NZ team at the 2007 Optimist Worlds and placed in the top 20 in the 2008 Optimist Worlds. Sam is also an accomplished Match Racer, winning the NZ Youth Match Racing Nationals in 2014. Sam has been coaching since 2009. As Head Coach at Worser Bay Boating Club, Sam designed the program that saw the club achieve its best ever NZ Nationals result in 2015, including the National Champion. He was also invited by a club near Boston (USA) to spend last northern summer to run their race squad program. Sam spent this summer in Australia and was part of the VIODA coaching team for World Cup Melbourne and the Nationals. Minnow Paul Rogers Started coaching at Blairgowrie Yacht Club in 2005. Head Coach in the Victorian Minnow Association 2012 - present. Sailing Background - First boat was an old Minnow, sailed minnows for 4 years before moving onto Lasers. Followed the YV pathway program and then moved into 14ft Skiffs for a number of years. Highlights / Achievements - Successfully coaching 5 sailors into the top 10 at the Minnow Nationals over the past 4 Nationals. I am also proud to see the Minnow class holding strong as a sailing community filled with wonderful sailors and supportive parents.

    Splash – 28 September 2017 This weekend – Villa Series- Day 1 Return LTS session from 10 am Briefing for club sailing around 12:30 3 Races - first signal at 1 PM OD Rob Burn - Assistant Peter Bush Last weekend Opening Day …..SMOKING! A vast, diverse crowd gathered at Shelley Beach on this sunny hot day for the official opening of the 2017-18 QCYC sailing Season. Young and old were there to support the club. After some words of the commodore Richard Gifford and a great speech from our Mayor John Leggatt, the traditional cannon was fired by Phil Chandler. It provided an excellent smoke screen soon to be replaced by competitive racing. There was a great turnout on the day with a diversity of yachts: Traditional P class, Lasers, Paper Tiger, Finn, Topaz, Flying 15, 420, Starling, Splash and Optimists. Conditions were light North Wester with plenty of sunshine to make the spectators and sailors happy. The junior fleets sailed 3 Races and the intermediate and senior fleets completed 2 races. Results Boat Winner P-class/Topaz River Hopkins Open Fleet Optimist Finn Stichbury Green Fleet Optimist Max Edwards Starling/Splash Emily Overend Laser/420/Finn Rob Burn PT Nigel/ Kain Greenbank We can’t really count the Flying 15 as they were invading……boat has a keel. LOL After racing support craft and yachts packed away, time for a good catch-up and shared afternoon tea up in the old club house.
