Regi-Stick Plus Bonnie Ballad (part 1) Part 1 Hi everyone. Here we are with a new 'Exploring Regi-SStick' series dedicated, this time, to the Regi-SStick Plus. It was great to meet so many of you at Alvaston Hall recently and, from the number of questions asked about Regi-SStick Plus over the Club Weekend, it’s clear that there’s a big demand for some song suggestions to go with the new registrations. So, here are a few to get you started, based on the music I enjoy playing using the Regi-SStick Plus. Important: There are always some initial questions that crop up frequently when a new product is introduced and one such question associated with Regi-SStick Plus concerns the Parameter Lock feature. If you follow the instructions that come with your Regi-SStick Plus you’ll see that you’re advised to set the Parameter Lock if you use a playing mode (e.g. single finger chord etc.) that is different from the default one. The Parameter Lock 'locks' your preferred choice of split point and fingering mode so that everyone can use the new registrations in the style of their choice. If you've mislaid the instructions already (!), you'll find a PDF copy on the stick itself which you can view on any home PC with Adobe Acrobat Reader. There are so many registrations on Regi-SStick Plus that I've taken banks A-JJ alphabetically from the Registration Menu for this first list… plenty to keep you going until next time when we'll look at banks J-ZZ.     Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Born to a wealthy family in Indiana, he defied the wishes of his dom ineering grandfather and took up music as a profession. Classically trained, he was drawn towards musical theatre. After a slow start, he began to achieve succe ss in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Br oadway musical stage. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote th e lyrics as well as the music for his songs. After a serious horseback riding accident in 1937, Porter was left disabled and in constant pain, but he continued to work. His shows of the early 1940s did not contain the lasting hits of his best work of the 1920s and 30s, but in 1948 he made a triumphant comeback with his most successful musical, Kiss Me, Kate. It w on the first Tony Award for Best Musical. Porter's other musicals include Fifty Million Frenchmen, DuBarry Was a Lady, Any thing Goes, Can-Can and Silk Stockings. His numerous hit songs include "Night an d Day","Begin the Beguine", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!", "I 've Got You Under My Skin", "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "You're the Top". He also composed scores for films from the 1930s to the 1950s, including Born to D ance (1936), which featured the song "You'd Be So Easy to Love", Rosalie (1937), which featured "In the Still of the Night"; High Society (1956), which included "True Love"; and Les Girls (1957).

The Litchfield Fund Weekly Newsletter “We just don’t hear it on the street, we have our ears spread across all the fields!!!!!” Cole Porter, born June 9, 1891, was raised in a Booth Tarkington patrician-dominated family. His grandfather, J.O. Cole, was a lawyer, supposedly the richest man in Indiana. He doted on his daughter, Mr. Porter’s mother, who in turn, dominated her son’s life. His musical training began early & included violin, piano & composing! His grandfather sent him to prep school to prepare for a career in law. But by bringing an upright piano along, he found his entertaining made him popular. Later at Yale, he wrote some fight songs that are still played today. He chose a music career over law, which got under his grandfather’s skin! Anything Goes: From the late 1920s to the 1950s, Cole Porter was one of the USA’s most popular Broadway composers. He had a long list of Broadway hits such as Anything Goes, Can-Can, Silk Stockings & High Society to name a very, very few. He was one of a small number of composers who wrote both his music & lyrics, getting his lyrical side from his father, an amateur poet. And his songs, like those of Gershwin, Berlin, Rodgers, Hart, Cahn & others, make up a large part of the Great American Songbook, American Culture & American jazz standards; songs like I Get a Kick Out of You, What is This Thing Called Love? & You’d Be So Easy to Love. Others became iconic performances & recordings, the song & artist combination becoming historic.

    “Begin the Beguine”--Artie Shaw & His Orchestra (1938) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by: Tom Nolan (guest post)* Artie Shaw One of the most popular American recordings of the twentieth century was never expected to be a hit. “Begin the Beguine”--the three-and-a-quarter-minute, 78-rpm disc that catapulted bandleader-clarinetist Artie Shaw (1910-2004) to international stardom in the autumn of 1938, and by the 1960s was estimated to have sold some six and a half million copies-- was released as the B-side to a swing-era update of Rudolf Friml’s old operetta favorite “Indian Love Call.” Shaw’s cheeky arrangement of Friml’s number, with a scat-tinged vocal by saxophonist Tony Pastor, had been prompting strong reactions during the band’s live performances. “’Indian Love Call’ was the one that got all the applause in the ballroom,” Shaw said; Artie was all but certain it would be a sensation on disc. But before waxing “Indian Love Call” on the afternoon of July 24th, 1938, Art had another number he wanted to record: a smooth, propulsive styling of an all-but-forgotten three-year-old song from the unsuccessful 1935 Cole Porter show “Jubilee.” That didn’t sound like a good idea to the folks at RCA, who said Shaw’s notion was “a complete waste of time.” The record-men only agreed to let him record “Begin the Beguine,” Artie wrote, “when I insisted that it would make a nice, quiet contrast to ‘Indian Love Call.’” Cole Porter was already one of Shaw’s favorite show-composers; in the course of Artie’s career, he’d record more tunes by Porter (19 total) than by any other songwriter.

PO Box 1236 Saratoga Springs NY 12866 USA terry gibbs dream band series begin the beguine (1959) Background: Born in Brooklyn in 1924, Terry Gibbs began his professional career at the age of twelve winning the Major Bowes Amateur Hour (one of the most popular radio shows on the air; Frank Sinatra also made his fi rst professional appearance on this program). Gibbs toured with Benny Goodman, Chubby Jackson, Buddy Rich and Woody Herman, becoming a leader himself some years later. In addition, he has composed over 300 songs, 280 of which have been recorded by the likes of Nat King Cole, Woody Herman, George Shearing, Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley, Buddy DeFranco, and many other jazz musicians. According to Gibbs, when he moved to Los Angeles in 1957, he’d already made an album with a big band that he wasn’t very pleased with. He wanted to do a new one, but he wanted the music to be fully rehearsed before the band entered the studio.
