PASTORAL COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters, I am writing this on Monday morning, the day after the Fall Festival. While many of us are tired, exhausted and still hydrating from the scorching two days, there are members of the committee still at work cleaning up and following through all the details to put a closure on the festival. Words are not adequate to express heartfelt thanks for all the work that went into the festival. Like so much of life these days around the parish, each day is a new day in discovering what we lost in Hurricane Harvey. Many trips to the various stores had to be made because of the losses being discovered. So, with all the extra work, the committee made the two-day festival one of great memories. Even the rain on Sunday didn’t dampen the spirit of the day. According to preliminary numbers by committee people, the live auction broke the all-time record! Combined, the sports auction on Saturday night and the Sunday live auction literally blew it out of the water! We are grateful and thankful to all our donors, sponsors and buyers for the great success. And, that doesn’t even mention the hard- working committee people who have been accumulating items for two years for the auction. Thank you all!!! Finally thank you to our great co-chairs for the festival. I knew it would be a great festival because the co-chairs had the know-how and experience. Kudos to the sound team – you proved me wrong and I hereby publicly acknowledge your expertise. The “voice” of the festival was not only hospitable and inviting but put miles on his feet while experiencing the festival in different areas of the grounds interacting with the people. So, to all – from the set-up crew, to the co-chairs and chairs of the various levels of the festival, to the clean-up crew and the evaluators, thank you, THANK YOU and THANKS! This weekend we welcome the members of Casa Juan Diego to the parish. Every year we are assigned a missionary appeal through the Archdiocesan Mission Office. Casa Juan Diego was founded in 1980, following the Catholic Worker model of and , to serve immigrants and refugees and the poor. From one small house it has grown to ten houses. Casa Juan Diego publishes a newspaper, the Houston Catholic Worker, six times a year to share the values of the Catholic Worker movement and the stories of the immigrants and refugees uprooted by the realities of the global economy. To learn more about the works of Casa Juan Diego, please visit their website: www.cjd.org. You will be amazed at how Matthew 25:31-46 comes alive and is lived out. Things do not stop at St. Ignatius. With the fall festival behind us, we turn to the next event - the choir’s musical presentation of the Te Deum by Dan Forrest. It is for one night only – October 18th, the Feast of St. Luke, the Evangelist. It is a night of song in which our hearts will be joined together to give God thanks and praise for our newly renovated/rebuilt church. We have been so blessed and have this wonderful opportunity to gather and give praise to God. I sincerely hope that you will find the time to pause, gather in community and come to fill the church with your presence as our choir leads us in lifting our hearts with songs of praise To God. Again, thank you for being a part of the success of our Fall Festival. It took all of us working together to accomplish such a wonderful goal. With my prayers for a complete renewal,

Highlight on Depression Summertime is upon us and with it many exciting activities, vacations, and hot days are ahead! While this can be a time of great joy, it can also be a time of pain for individuals suffering from sadness and depression.

Depression by the Numbers: • Depression ranks among the top 3 workplace issues in the U.S. • Depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. among people ages 15-44 • It is estimated that 7% of the general population suffers from depression • Nearly 15% of women suffer from postpartum depression within 4-6 weeks of giving birth • 30% of college students report feeling depressed, which disrupts their studies • Two-thirds of people with depression do not seek nor receive proper treatment • 80% of people treated for depression show improvement within 4-6 weeks

Common symptoms include: Feeling helpless or hopeless, apathy, general discontent, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, sadness, excess sleepiness or restless sleep, fatigue, loss of appetite, excessive crying, irritability, social isolation, lack of concentration, slowness in activity, and weight gain or loss.

How We Can Help: If you or a loved one suffers from one or more of the symptoms listed above, counseling can help by giving: Insight about your emotions, new tools for dealing with your problems, and emotional support for making progress.
