Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

"—Refinery29 “it bangs emotionally.” – Stereogum “a fine tuned ear for what crowds across dance floors are craving” – Dancing Astronaut “anthemic, uplifiting” – DJ Times Galantis, the duo of Christian “Bloodshy” Karlsson of Miike Snow and Linus Eklow aka Style of Eye, have shared another track, “The Heart That I’m Hearing” from their self-titled debut EP due out April 1 on Big Beat Records. The pulsating synths and skittering rhythm of “The Heart That I’m Hearing” mirror the song’s lyrics about the rush of falling love. The emotive vocal features the custom “Galantis filter” which blends male and female voices. Stream the track here and at Refinery 29 where it premiered. The EP is available for pre-sale here. Galantis just announced a North American tour and they’re bringing the Seafox, the fantastical animal on their artwork, with them! The tour includes appearances at the Coachella Festival on April 12th and 19th, which will be their debut live dates. When Galantis was conceived, they quickly realized a dj set would not embody the music’s Olympian sound that unites various branches of electronic music and have been putting together a live show with the adventurous spirit and innovation their songs demand. -
Kaskade Biography
In 2003, Ryan Raddon, more commonly known by his fans as the famous house and trance artist Kaskade, developed his alter ego with the debut of his first hit album “It’s You, It’s Me.” Originally from Chicago, Kaskade made his way from the windy city to New York, where he started his career as a DJ. He then moved to Salt Lake City, where he continued to explore DJing and started his own record label, Mechanized Records. In addition to his personal endeavors, Kaskade began collaborating with other professionals in the industry and sold a few tracks to Chris Smith, an A&R director for an up-and-coming house label in San Francisco, California. It wasn’t long before Kaskade moved to San Francisco, where he was hired to assist Smith at OM Records. After years of traveling around the United States, Kaskade discovered his love for house music in the world of electronic dance music. His full-fledged fame surfaced with the release of his album “It’s You, It’s Me” in 2003 and the subsequent hits that followed, including “In the Moment,” which was released in 2004. Kaskade continued to climb the charts as one of the industry’s most popular house DJs with the release of “Love Mysterious” in 2006, “Strobelight Seduction” in 2008, “Dynasty” in 2010, and “Fire & Ice” in 2011. In addition to his roster of unparalleled musical tracks, Kaskade strives to make a name for himself as one of the top live performers in the industry. Thus far, he has performed at several Insomniac events, including Electric Daisy Carnival in 2010, and he will be headlining at Insomniac’s new Christmas music festival Winter Wonderland in 2012. -

Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute. -

Pinotfile Vol 7 Issue 9
Pinot Noir is what real wine drinkers want to drink Volume 7, Issue 9 January 1, 2009 2008 Pinot Noir All-Americans As 2008 wraps up, “Best of 2008” lists are traditional and what better analogy for great American Pinot Noir than to name the best performers “All-Americans.” As I have done the past few years, I am proud to present the Pinot Noir All-Americans of 2008, the best wines I drank out of the over 1,000 American Pinot Noirs I formally sampled over the past year. Pinot Noir in California and Oregon is now of such consistently high quality that it is difficult to single out wines that stand out from the pack. It is a testimony to the cadre of passionate winegrowers who have scoffed at the suggestion that Pinot Noir is a “heartbreak grape” and have successfully corralled the grape’s temperamental nature. The 2008 All-Americans were chosen in the spirit of celebration of the copious bounty of Pinot Noir that we are blessed with in this country. The All-Americans were selected as much for their fruity, flirty, New World hedonism as for their description-defying sensuality. These wines were technically complete, but more significantly, they displayed a powerful charisma. It is a truth that it is not what is written but what is emoted that truly defines a wine’s greatness. Veronique Drouhin, winemaker at Oregon’s Domaine Drouhin, echoes my sentiments perfectly when she said, “There are plenty of good wines in the world that give you pleasure. A great wine gives you emotion.” The stylistic split of power versus finesse or “New World” against “Old World,” is still ever present, but the superiority of either style is a tired argument. -

1. JOHN TEJADA Where (Palette) 6. THE FASHION The Fashion (Epic Records) Known to most as one of the USA’s top minimal minds, this LA based techno Friendly snarls open the Fashion’s sophomore album on “Dead Boys.” This sounds athlete is back for yet another solid album on his very own highly respected like a contradiction in terms (How are snarls friendly and is that the right tone for imprint. Marking the 50th installment for the label, and the 11th full-length of his a song about the deceased?), but that might just be the Danish (now) quartet’s career, Where is another Tejada classic. Taking a delicate approach, using friendly secret weapon. Creating a combination of the best of British and American indie- synth voices, light hits and dynamic mixes, the tracks are full of life and beg to be pop, the Fashion know their way around an infectious, easy hook. The bounce, played either on the club floor or out of your car door. Spacious and extra melodic, tempered with a stretched-out chorus on “Letters From The Ambulance” belie an Tejada knows exactly how to take a simple one bar synth loop and expand it into effortless ability to bring together disparate moods in one song and turn them into a throbbing pulse that makes your foot pound relentlessly. While the tracks keep one accessible entity. There is confusion and messiness on “Like Knives,” which a solid rhythmic drive, the real beauty in the mixes comes from expertly sublime together make it into the perfect scowling statement. -
