Chapter 24 Financial Accelerator Starting in 2007, and becoming much more pronounced in 2008, macro-financial events took center stage in the macroeconomic landscape. The “financial collapse,” as many have termed it, had its proximate cause in the U.S., as several financial-sector institutions experienced severe or catastrophic downturns in the values of their financial assets. Various and large-scale policy efforts were implemented very quickly in the U.S. to try to contain possible consequences. The motivation behind these policy efforts was not to save the financial sector for its own sake. Instead, the rationale for policy responses was that severe financial downturns often lead to contraction in real macroeconomic markets (for example, think in terms of goods markets). Despite a raft of policy measures to try to prevent such effects, the severe financial disruption did cause a sharp contraction of economic activity in real markets: GDP declined by nearly four percent in the third quarter of 2008, the time period during which financial disruptions were at their most severe. This quarterly decline was the largest in the U.S. since the early 1980s, and GDP continued declining for the next three quarters. But the reason this pullback in GDP was especially worrisome was something history shows is common. When it is triggered by financial turbulence, a contraction in real economic activity can further exacerbate the financial downturn. This downstream effect was the real fear of policy makers. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 THE ABSTRACT The project was inspired by a frequent, if rather paradoxical, clinical observation. While patients with epilepsy frequently reported disruptive memory difficulties, neuropsychological testing often failed to confirm the serious nature of the patients' complaints. It had previously been assumed that patients were overstating their difficulties. However, the same anomalous pattern has been noted elsewhere, notably in elderly and head-injured samples. This investigation was therefore undertaken to assess further the nature and degree of everyday memory difficulties in people with epilepsy. The first study assessed subjects' beliefs about the incidence of memory failures using self-report techniques. Seven hundred and sixty patients with epilepsy and one hundred and forty-six subjects without epilepsy participated in the study. The level of patients' complaints was explored with respect to epilepsy, treatment and psychological factors. -

Muhlenberg College Five‐Year Diversity Strategic Plan Approved by the Board of Trustees, October 24, 2014 Preamble: Terminology Throughout its work, members of the Diversity Strategic Planning Committee (DSPC) wrestled with the problem of appropriate terminology in discussing Muhlenberg's diversity aspirations. While acknowledging that many types of diversity are important and beneficial, in reviewing the revised and updated Muhlenberg College Statement on Diversity (see Appendix C) we agreed that this plan should focus on those types of diversity represented by "historically underrepresented and marginalized groups" within our community. Having said that, we found that other terms, however imperfect they may be, are occasionally useful, accurate, and necessary. The term "multicultural," for example, while inapt for describing individuals, has gained acceptance at Muhlenberg as a general term for many of the groups we understand as "historically underrepresented and marginalized" at the College. The Multicultural Center is now a hub of activity for students of color, international students, Queer students, feminist students, and others. In considering alternatives to "multicultural" in use on other campuses, we found other options equally problematic. In certain contexts the term "students of color" or "faculty/staff of color" are used when the underlying data specifically reference racial diversity. The CLI is an evaluated inventory of all landscapes having historical significance that are listed on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, or are otherwise managed as cultural resources through a public planning process and in which the NPS has or plans to acquire any legal interest. The CLI identifies and documents each landscape’s location, size, physical development, condition, landscape characteristics, character-defining features, as well as other valuable information useful to park management.
