This year we take you to the USA to celebrate the birthplace of the music we love.

Every month WAYJO will transport you to a different city in America to showcase the music that has made it famous; from New York to New Orleans, Las Vegas to Hollywood, Chicago to Detroit. Each of these great cities have contributed a musical style that has influenced modern music and created some of the greatest moments in modern music history.

We are very excited to welcome two very special guests to Perth from New York City, saxophonist Dick Oatts and trombonist Mariel Bildsten, to perform especially with WAYJO as part of our American Jazz Story.

Dick Oatts is jazz royalty, holding the position of lead alto player for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra since 1977 and has one of the most powerful and distinct alto saxophone sounds in jazz. He will be bringing the sound and energy of New York City to Downstairs at The Maj, transforming that room into The Village Vanguard.

Mariel Bildsten is a rising star in New York, playing in many of the city’s big bands, including the Evan Sherman Big Band, and is part of one of my favourite brass bands, Brass Against the Machine. She has a real respect for the history of jazz and will be bringing her expertise to us for our New Orleans night.

We are so excited to bring you this program in 2019 with our three exceptional bands filled with immensely talented young musicians. I look forward to seeing you at one of our many performances.

Dr Mace Francis - WAYJO Artistic Director An American Jazz Story

In the early 20th century a brand new artform evolved from a melting pot of , and creole culture, creating a new sound: jazz.

In 2019 WAYJO celebrates America’s original artform, constantly evolving and influencing other styles of music.

From concerts featuring some great jazz vocalists to styles derived from the great jazz cities of the USA, every concert in our season will bring WAYJO’s energetic take on the sounds of the big band with freshness and panache.

Join us all year long as we present An American Jazz Story.

4 The Great American Songbook

WAYJO kicks off 2019 with a toe tapping, joyous concert featuring the songs from The Great American Songbook.

After the sell-out shows Ladies Sing the Blues in 2018, the WAYJO vocalists will bring their talents to tunes made famous by , Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Billie Holliday, as composed by Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Berlin, Porter and more.

The Great American Songbook will be the perfect introduction to the 2019 program, so bring your family and friends along to what will be the first hit show of the year.

Jazz and Motown were wedded from the beginning, Detroit acting as a hotbed of collaboration and invention in evolving musical styles. The famed Blue Bird Inn played home to jazz greats , Charlie Parker and Elvin Jones while jazz instrumentalists played key roles in the development of the Motown sound.

WAYJO brings all of these famed Detroit influences together across two incredible nights of soulful jazz, hip riffs, and cool funk.

13 The Debut Collection

Did you know that WAYJO members not only perform, they compose their own work? For a number of years, WAYJO have commissioned young composers to create big band compositions, performed by our Wednesday Night Orchestra.

This tradition continues in 2019, when we present The Debut Collection, a night of original compositions from our Composer in Residence program.

The Wednesday Night Orchestra will also revisit some of the commissions of previous years, allowing new jazz music to breathe again and the original composers to revisit some of the most exciting new big band work in the country.

20 WAYJO Regional Tour

Regional Tour is a highlight for almost every WAYJO member’s calendar. Not only do they experience an intensive week of playing and honing their skills as a band, but they get to share their music with people, from all walks of life, all over Regional WA. This year WAYJO will be embarking on two Regional Tours.

In May, the Monday Night Orchestra will be visiting the South-West Region of WA including Bunbury, Busselton, Albany and Mandurah. WAYJO has visited these areas on previous tours and has strong bonds with several schools including Busselton Senior High School, Great Southern Grammar (Albany) and Bunbury Cathedral Grammar.

September, Tuesday Night Orchestra head North to visit Moora, Merredin and Geraldton. We were so blown away by the response of audiences in 2018, we wanted to do a follow up tour to cement our relationships with schools and venues in these areas.

Regional audiences are extremely important to WAYJO, and we can’t wait to hit the road once more.

Thanks to the support of some wonderful partners, WAYJO’s international reputation is going from strength to strength.

In 2019, our artists and staff will be visiting two countries and sharing cultural experiences with musicians from around the globe.

WAYJO musicians and a Music Director will attend the Brubeck Institute in California, USA, thanks to the Geoffrey Christian Artist Exchange Fund.

This is an invaluable experience for some of our younger artists to travel and work with peers from around the world in an intensive course.

Supported by our Principal Partners North West Shelf Gas, we also welcome the staff and students of Showa University, Japan, for one week in Perth - and send six of our musicians to Kawasaki. This cultural exchange program has been run over the last five years, and has delivered many cultural benefits and life-long memories that have changed lives in both countries.

WAYJO are always exploring the highest quality opportunities for our musicians to grow in their careers and experience what the world has to offer, and our thriving international exchange program is one of the best ways we can do this.

We are grateful to our supporting partners for offering these experiences.
