NATIONAL COLLEGIATE WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018 Championship 2 History 6 National Seeds 20 Regionals 21 Brackets 44 2018 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS UCLA wins women’s gymnastics national championship: it was a storybook ending for UCLA as the Bruins won their seventh national collegiate women’s gymnastics championship with a perfect 10.0000 on the final routine of the competition in St. Louis, Missouri, upending two-time defending champion Oklahoma in the process. The Sooners led the then-third place Bruins by .175 entering the final rotation, but the UCLA women would not be denied. Building on the momentum gained from senior Peng-Peng Lee’s perfect performance on the uneven bars, the Bruins moved to beam and scored a Super Six and championship record 49.7500 in the final event to win the competition 198.0750-198.0375. “This team truly is the easiest team that I’ve ever coached,” UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field said. “That is because this time last year we said if we need, if we want, a different result we’ve got to do things differently, and what started that was me and our coaching staff just getting real with the team about getting as physically fit as you individually can get and making choices outside of the gym, those of a champion.” UCLA’s epic final beam rotation began with a big score of 9.9375 by Grace Glenn. A fall by Olympian Madison Kocian forced the Bruins to hit on their final four routines, and Brielle Nguyen, Katelyn Ohashi and Kyla Ross stepped up to post individual scores of 9.8750, 9.9500 and 9.9875, respectively. With those scores in hand, Lee needed a 9.9750 for UCLA to pull off the improbable comeback, and with all eyes on her as the final competitor of the night, she delivered a perfect 10. “I did not know what score I needed to win, I didn’t even know we had a chance of winning at that point, to be honest,” Lee said. “So I said you know what, this is going to be the last beam routine in my life, being a senior. I’m just going to soak in every single moment. I’m going to take a deep breath and just look in the eyes of the judges and just take my time, and as soon as everyone started cheering I thought I got a 10.000, personally, and then I looked at the scoreboard and I saw UCLA on top and I am still in shock.” The top-ranked Sooners led right up until the last routine, starting on beam and concluding their competition on bars. Oklahoma posted what would have been the second-best team score in the history of the finals competition with their 198.0375 and was led by sophomore phenom Maggie Nichols, who posted a session-best all-around score of 39.7750, including matching 9.9625 scores on bars and floor. Overall, the 2018 championship saw four individuals post perfect 10.000 scores, the most at a single championship since 2005. Lee scored two during the competition, her beam routine to win it and her bars routine, also during Super Six competition. Nichols scored a 10.0000 on the bars during semifinal competi- tion, as did Stanford senior Elizabeth Price. The four perfect scores bring the total number over the 32-years of the championship to 50. Individual competitions, contested on Friday during team semifinals, saw seven individuals win or share a national championship in the five gymnastics dis- ciplines. Nichols was the most recognized as she won the all-around competition outright with a score of 39.8125, a mark that matches the championships record. Nichols also shared titles in the uneven bars and floor exercise. Nichols shared the uneven bars title with Price, as the duo notched perfect scores in the event, and the floor exercise championship with UCLA’s Ohashi. Florida’ Alex McMurtry, Oklahoma Brenna Dowell and Utah’s MyKayla Skinner each scored 9.9375 on the vault to share the national championship, and Lee picked up the balance beam title with a 9.9875. Team semifinal action saw UCLA, LSU and Nebraska advance out of semifinal one and Oklahoma, Florida and Utah earn spots at the final Super Six competi- tion out of semifinal two. 2018 RESULTS Team Semifinal (Note: Top three teams from each semifinal advanced to the team final.)
