SA Schools' Champions, PRG, win Tri Nations Tournament 26/9/2002

The South African Schools’ Champions, Paul Roos Gymnasium, were invited to play in the Tri Nations Tournament between , Zimbabwe and Namibia after the International Schools’ event in Scotland was cancelled.

The tournament was played at Windhoek Country Club in Namibia. The competition between the 3 nations included combined scores between the 4 u/16 and 4 u/18 players selected by each country. As they were not eligible to win the main event, the Paul Roos team set about beating all the other teams in the u/18 section.

The Paul Roos players were: Oliver Bekker, Pieter Coetzee, Philip Gerber and Wynand Snyman. All these players except Wynand Snyman are members of Golf Club and play for Boland. Wynand plays for Southern Cape and is a member of the Mossel Bay Golf Club.

The four players showed tremendous golfing ability and determination. Their positive attitude helped them to go into the second day with only one game behind Zimbabwe. Oliver Bekker had an outstanding tournament. He shot a level par round of 72 during the morning round of the Singles Medal, giving his team a great start; as did Pieter Coetzee when he defeated both Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The two were foursome partners and proceeded to be unbeaten in their morning games on the second day. They had comfortable wins of 6-5 vs Zimbabwe, 6-5 vs Namibia and 3-2 vs South Africa. Coetzee had an excellent game on the final day against one of S.A.’s finest juniors, Heinrich Pistorius.

Philip Gerber played impressively on the afternoon of the Singles Medal. He fought back with birdies to finish his round with a level par 72 beating all his opponents (having been 7 shots over par after the first couple of holes!)

Wynand Snyman’s excellent scores in this round also helped the S.A. Schools side to be 2 games ahead of all the other teams going into the final day.

Gerber and Snyman were foursome partners. They combined very well and still managed to win despite the pressure caused by one opponent getting a hole-in-one on the second last hole. Snyman played his best golf on the last day. He was well under par inspite of a tough game.

The South African Schools’ champions won the tournament with a staggering score of 17-13 against the official South African side, 22-10 against Zimbabwe and 26-6 against Namibia.

The South African national team won the Tri Nations overall event with a score of 97 points to Zimbabwe’s 63.

PRG gholf team best in Southern Africa! 26/9/2002

In February of this year Paul Roos Gymnasium won the SA Schools' Championships, organised by the S.A. Golf Foundation. The winning school normally travelled to Scottland to take part against the best schools of various other countries. Unfortunately the sponsors of this event withdrew, so that it could not take place in 2002.

The team consisted of Wynand Snyman, Oliver Bekker, Pieter Coetzee and Philip Gerber (although Philip had left our school earlier this year, he still had to play for this team because the S.A. Golf Foundation insisted on it) and between 22 and 24 July they competed against under 18 teams of South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Paul Roos obtained 65 points, while the South African, Namibian and Zimbabwian teams could only score 28, 17 and 35 points respectively.

It is therefore safe to say that Paul Roos Gymnasium has the best gholf team in Southern Africa!

Hat Trick for Paul Roos Tennis 2/9/2002

The first tennis team of Paul Roos Gymnasium took part in the Marilie Moolman Tennis Tournament which was held in Cradock on the weekend of 22 Augustus 2002. It was the first time this tournament was held and it was attended by Waterkloof High School, Grey College and Cradock High School. Girls teams from Waterkloof, Eunice High School in Bloemfontein, Hoër Volkskool from Graaff-Reinett and Cradock High School also took part.

It was the third major victory this year for the Paul Roos side. They also won the Kearsney College Tournament in February as well as the Wayne Ferreira Tournament in May. What makes this an even greater achievement, is the fact that the Paul Roos side is a relative young team which includes a grade 8 player as well as two grade 9 players.

The Bob Hewitt trophy was presented to the team by Bob Hewitt, himself being a winner of 14 Grand Slam titles during the sixties and seventies, during a formal dinner function. The cup was won by Hewitt in Beirut, Libanon in 1969 and was donated to Cradock High School by him.

Athletics News flashes / Achievements 27/8/2002

Pieter van Breda achieved his personal best - a height of 4,83m in the pole-vaulting event at the World Junior Qualifying Athletics Meeting in Stellenbosch. It is the best achievement by a junior pole-vaulter in SA in the past eight years. Unfortunately Pieter's achievement only just misses the qualifying height for the World Youth Championships.

Schalk Pienaar took part in the World School's Youth Gymnastrade in Caen, France, as captain of the SA Team. Unfortunately he stumbled over the last hurdle and fell. The 4X100m relay team of which Schalk was a member achieved a second place and set a new South African record.

Old Boy Ter de Villiers performed excellently in Europe. After winning races in Belgium and Spain, he also won the 400m hurdles in Geneve, Switzerland, in a time of 49,28 sec. It was the best achievement of his career as well as the best achievement by a South African this year.

Marthinus van der Vyver to World Junior Athletics Championships 15/7/2002

Athletics South Africa (ASA) is to send a team to the 2002 IAAF World Junior Championships. This world event, which is held for the under 20 age category (athletes of 19 years and under) takes place in Kingston, Jamaica from 16 - 21 July 2002.

The South African team consists of 20 athletes (13 boys and 7 girls). Marthinus van der Vyver, star athlete of PRG and silver medal winner in the 110m hurdles race at the 2001 World Youth Championships, is the only Boland athlete to have been chosen for this team. He will take part in the 110m hurdles and the 4x100m relay races after excellent performances in the 100m (10.48 sec) and 110m hurdles (14.31sec). Marthinus made a comeback after a disappointing season in which he suffered from several injuries.

"Although the team selected is smaller than the 2002 team, it does reflect a combination of medal contenders for this year's championships and medal prospects for the world championships in 2004. These championships will therefore serve as part of their preparation towards 2004, and we are confident that this team will make us proud," said Carl Preller, chairperson of ASA's Elite Coaches Coordinating Committee.

The team leaves for Jamaica on 10 July and returns to South Africa on 24 July.

Best tennis team in South Africa! 21/5/2002

Seven Paul Roos tennis players participated in the tenth Parktown Wayne Ferreira tennis tournament that was held at the Ellispark tennis courts in . This tournament enjoys the status as the only premier tennis event for high schools in South Africa. The tournament facilitates the participation of the strongest tennis schools throughout the country and covers all regions of the country. Schools qualify to participate through play-offs in the different regions. This year more than 40 schools entered the play-offs. Schools also particpate in 2 sections: the A section being the stronger of the two.

Friday morning the Paul Roos side was up against Benoni High School. Paul Roos beat the Benoni side convincingly 8 matches to 1. In the afternoon Paul Roos played Cradock High School, whose players practice at a tennis academy. They were quite tough opponents and thanks to the inspiring support from the other players and a superb effort from, amongst others, Jean Stipp, the Paul Roos side managed to win 4 of the 6 singles matches. The three outstanding doubles matches were played on Saturday afternoon, and Paul Roos managed to beat the Cradock side with a total of 6 matches against 3.

Saturday morning we were up against Waterkloof. Waterkloof had been the winners of the tournament for more than 5 years. We used our reserve, Paul Janse van Rensburg, who played an outstanding match - winning the tiebreaker. After a few tough matches, the Paul Roos side managed to beat Waterkloof for the first time ever with quite a convincing result: 7 – 2.

Having beaten Benoni, Cradock and Waterkloof, and winning 21 of the 27 matches, we qualified for the final which was to be played on Sunday morning. We were up against Kearsney College, whom we beat in the final of the Kearsney tournament earlier this year. Since the tournament, Kearnsey imported two new very good players.

It was evident that the Paul Roos side was up against stiff competition. We lost the first four matches and were 0 - 4 down. George Carstens and Casper Steenkamp were still playing and won their respective matches. But we were 2 – 4 down. The only lifeline the side had, was to win all three doubles matches which seemed like an impossible task. Kearsney only needed to win one match to win the tournament.

After a team talk, the three doubles pairs went onto the courts. The first doubles match was easily won with a result of 8 games to 2 games. Shortly afterwards Paul Roos won the second doubles match with a result of 8 games to 3. All the pressure was on the third doubles, which was the deciding match of the tournament. The first team to reach 8 games would win the tournament.

The games went from 1 all to 7 all and the teams had to play a tiebreaker. George and Eckhardt managed to win the tiebreaker with 7 points to 3 - to win the match 8 games to 7 with absolute outstanding and dedicated play.

Paul Roos managed to turn a 0 – 4 down situation around and beat Kearsney College 5 – 4. The focus of the side, their fighting spirit and their school pride paid off and Paul Roos was officially crowned the best boys’ tennis team in South Africa. What makes this even more outstanding, is that it was the second time they received this honour after having won the Kearsney tournament in February this year.

The best score for the 17 holes played up to that stage (instead of the normal 36), was taken. Paul Roos's team consisted of: Philip Gerber (+1 handicap), Oliver Bekker (+1 handicap) and Wynand Snyman (2 handicap). For the first time in the history of PRG golf, we were nominated as the best golf team out of all the schools in our country. At the Western Province Championships, Jarred Botha achieved no fewer than three first places: 100m backstroke Open, 200m backstroke Open, 50m butterfly Open

Other Paul Roos swimmers who excelled at these championships were Gary Wood, Eduard Delport, Luan Reineck, Merwe Benade and Willem Roux.

The Maties under 16 relay team consisted of 4 Paul Roosers. In some of the most exciting relay races of the Championships, they won three silver medals, missing gold by the proverbial split second.
