From this last belvedere, you can observe the biggest and oldest volcanic crater at the bottom of which lies Furnas lake and the spas of Furnas valley. Once in Furnas lunch (included) will be served, the famous "Cozido nas Caldeiras”. Along the south coast you will make a stop at belvedere of Caloura and will drive by the town of Lagoa before returning to Ponta Delgada.     Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel Island Portugal Friday, April 28, 2017 The seas remained lumpy through the night prior to reaching he Azores. During that time, I did feel a “Heart Tug” as we passed about 300 miles north of Funchal, Madeira, the origin of my first pacemaker. Most of you know of that story with us being taken off the ship there for the necessary implantation of my first pace-a-maker. It was built by a French company, that was owned by an Italian company and installed by a Portuguese doctor within hours of our arrival in Funchal. The fact that it could only be read with a French computer led to some interesting sequences during subsequent doctor visits in the USA. Ponta Delgado is on Sao Miquel Island, the largest of the nine islands in the Azores archipelago. These islands have their own microcli- mate and because of its location in the mid Atlantic Ocean, the seawater temperature is very constant. These waters gets contributions from the cold north Atlantic and the Gulf Stream affected southern portions. Hence it is a real cafeteria for fish of all sorts and whaling was a big part of its economy until Portugal outlawed it in 1974. But fishing persists as does a whale watching tourism attraction as eve- ry type of whale migrates through these waters. The atmospheric temperature is also very mild. Homes do not have heating, maybe one fireplace at most. The islands are volcanic in origin and most of the islands have numerous lakes—really craters remaining after volcanic reactions.

    AZORES VOLCANO GEOTRAVERSE* Wes Gibbons 2019 In this Holiday Geology guide we describe a west-to-east drive across the volcanoes of São Miguel, the largest and most easily accessible (and therefore most visited) island in the Azores archipelago. São Miguel lies 2,400km from Barcelona and Newfoundland, and is positioned geologically just east of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge tectonic plate boundary which runs 3,000km north to Iceland and over 10,000km south to Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic. Despite the geographic isolation of the island (the nearest continental landmass is 1,500km away at the Lisbon coast) it is nevertheless well served by flights to the capital Ponta Delgada from both European and North American destinations. You will need to hire a car on arrival and buy a road map before you arrive: the Azores Tour & Trail (Discovery Walking Guides 2019) is a good choice.     Briefing Research for REGI Committee: The economic, social and territorial situation of the Azores (Portugal) This briefing was prepared to provide information for the visit to the Azores (Portugal) of 22 to 26 May 2017 of a delegation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Regional Development, the islands visited being São Miguel and Terceira. 1. Introduction The Azores archipelago is an autonomous region of Portugal located in the North Atlantic, 1 500 km from the European mainland (distance from Lisbon). The archipelago is of volcanic origin and comprises 9 islands and several islets which belong to three groups: 1) the Western Group (with two islands: Flores and Corvo); 2) the Central Group (with five islands: Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira); and 3) the Eastern Group (with two islands: São Miguel and Santa Maria, and the Formigas islets). The geographical position of Azores and its volcanic origin gave rise to a wide variety of ecosystems and landscapes. Some of the Azores’ natural resources have been classified by UNESCO as biosphere reserves (i.e. Corvo, Flores and Graciosa). The Azores has a maritime climate, with on average a temperature of 20.5° C in summer and 16° C in winter. The marine surface area of the Azores is 954 496 km2, making it one of the largest exclusive economic zones (EEZs) in the European Union.1 Source: Freguesias.pt São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores archipelago, with an area of 759 41 km2. The Azores archipelago The Azores are a volcanic archipelago located in the middle of North Atlantic Ocean. Together with the archipelagos of Madeira, Selvagens, Canary Islands and Cabo Verde, they are part of Macaronesia, the “happy islands” (Fernández-Palacios, 2010). The Azorean Islands were discovered by Portuguese naviga- tors in 1427 (Santa Maria), Flores and Corvo being the last islands to be found in 1452. However, accord- ing to old maps its existence was previously known. It is believed that the archipelago received its name from birds that were common in these islands either the Goshawk (Açor in Portuguese) or a local subspe- cies of Buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi) that the sailors erroneously identified as goshawks (Frutuoso, 1963). Introduction I would like to suggest in this paper that from very early on in United States history the islands of the Azores served as mid-Atlantic meeting point for Portuguese and American culture. A good example of that is the description the historian William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859) left us of his stay on the island of São Miguel as a young man (he was nineteen years old at the time), in connec - tion with a visit to his grandfather, Thomas Hickling, the American diplomatic representative there. Although Prescott’s stay on the island lasted for six months, that is, between October 1815 and April 1816, due to a serious eye condition, which he was to suffer from most of his life, the young traveller was confined to a darkroom for much of the time he spent there. Had that not been the case, we would certainly have today a more complete account of his stay, thus sup - plementing the scanty number of foreign sources we have for the Azores and for the period in question. Still, what Prescott wrote about São Miguel and its inhabitants, though filtered through the eyes of a foreigner, allows us to draw an interesting picture of life on this Azorean island in the earlier part of the nineteenth century. For this paper, I have drawn primarily on two sources of information: the extant correspondence of Prescott which George Ticknor (1791-1871), fellow scholar and friend, included in his Life of William Hickling Prescott (1864), as well as the personal diary kept by Prescott during his European Grand Tour and which exists in manuscript form at the Massachusetts Historical Society.1 2.
