SINCE LAST HOME GAME 3RD OCTOBER

SCFL DIVISION 1: BILLINGSHURST 2 (BULL, FRENCH) STORRINGTON COMMUNITY 1

Billingshurst’s good league form continued on Saturday with a deserved 2-1 win over local rivals Storrington. There were early chances for both sides when first Robbie Tambling mistimed a header from a corner and put it over the bar; Luis Correia made a good block to stop Storrington scoring and Jahobi Maher then had a great strike that was saved by Storrington goalkeeper Elliott. After 35 minutes Billlingshurst took the lead when Eddie French won a header from a corner which dropped to Nick Tilley who provided the assist for Sam Bull (right) to finish. The home side continued to create chances and Maher, Jermaine Beer and Bull all had great opportunities to increase the lead. A combination of average finishing alongside some excellent ‘keeping from Elliott kept the score down. Inevitably just before half-time Storrington equalised when Archie Thorpe broke free and finished well from the edge of the box.

Billingshurst continued the 2nd half in a similar vein and after 52 mins, Bull flicked the ball over his full back and crossed for French to power a header past Elliott who for once was well beaten. As the game moved into the last 20 minutes , ‘hurst sat back and the away team started to have the better of the play although they didn’t create any real clear chances. Billingshurst saw out the match to gain a 2-1 victory and keep them in the top 5 in the table.

Manager Lee Spickett commented “Storrington played well but the lads performance meant we deserved to get the 3 points and it was great to see smiling faces all around the club after the game”.

6TH OCTOBER

SUSSEX SENIOR CUP : EASTBOURNE UNITED ASSOCIATION 3 BILLINGSHURST 1 (FERNANDES)

Billingshurst made the midweek journey down to Eastbourne in he Sussex Senior Cup looking to extend their good run. In the normal windy conditions, Billingshurst didn’t really perform in the first half and it was no surprise when after 19 minutes, Eastbourne took the lead. A corner was cleared but the away side went to sleep for the subsequent cross and Callum Smith scored with a free header. The home side continued to dominate until the last 5 minutes of the half when ‘hurst seemed to wake up. First an Eddie French header was scrambled away by the home defence and then Albi Baker hit a shot from 30 yards that hit the inside of the post with home keeper Hawkins just admiring the view. At a half time score of 1-0, Billingshurst were just happy to still be in the game.

The 2nd half began more positively for the away team and after 60 minutes James Bessant cut inside but his shot was well saved by Hawkins. Within 2 minutes, Billingshurst were 2 down when Smith latched onto a mistake. Following the introduction of new signing Tom Scott, they continued to apply pressure and deservedly got a goal back when Ricardo Fernandes (right) broke through 2 tackles and hammered the ball past the keeper. With seconds to go, Billingshurst put all men forward for a corner including their keeper. The ball was cleared and Kane Penn scored from just over the half way line.

Overall a deserved 3-1 victory to Eastbourne but a much better performance in the 2nd half.

As Manager Lee Spickett commented ”Although we had a few regulars missing tonight, really disappointed with our first half performance – we never got going”

HISTORY OF BILLINGSHURST F.C.

Founded in 1891 Billingshurst FC were initially members of the Horsham league before joining the West Sussex Football League at the time of its inception, enjoying many seasons before winning the West Sussex in 2012 and being promoted to the Sussex County League .

We currently run three senior sides, the 1st team competing in Southern Combination Football League Division 1 and the Reserves will be playing in the West Sussex Football League Championship North, Our Third Team following promotion will be competing in WSFL Div 3 North being one of the highest placed 3rd teams in the league.

As a Charter Standard club we also run fourteen mixed junior sides from under 7 – U16, currently three girls teams, Junior sides play in the Horsham and District youth, Surrey and Mid Sussex leagues.Plus our U18 side will be playing in SCFL.

We moved to our current home ground at Jubilee fields after vacating the old Station Road ground in 2006. due to the development of the swimming pool. With the aid of Football Foundation funding we enjoy excellent facilities including three senior pitches, and a number of junior ones and our main pitch has seen much development over recent years including, hard standing, floodlights, a stand and perimeter and spectator fencing.

We are enjoying our fourth season of senior football and as such have competed in the FA Vase and the FA Cup. HISTORY OF JERSEY BULLS F.C.

Only founded last year, Jersey Bulls is the most southerly football club in the English football league system. Following the footsteps of Guernsey FC, the Bulls was conceived by Chairman Russell Le Feuvre to give Island players an opportunity to test their abilities in a more competitive environment on the mainland. It also gives islanders an opportunity to support a club side in Jersey that competes nationally like the Jersey Reds and Team Jets do in rugby and netball respectively. On 30 November 2018 the Bulls got official FA approval for their bid to join the English football leagues and a month later the Combined Counties League approved their membership bid to join Division One for the 2019/20 season. Since then, Bulls announced ex-Island representative player Gary Freeman as Manager and signed up 32 local players.

On 6 July 2019, the Bulls played their first ever football match in a friendly at their home ground at Springfield Stadium against EFL League Two team Stevenage FC, losing 4-3. Striker Fraser Barlow made history when he put the Bulls in the lead to be the clubs first ever goal scorer. Another friendly ten days later saw a 3-0 reverse against Leicester City U23 Academy before a further leap into history was made when Bulls hosted their first ever league match against Ash United, winning 3-0. Barlow once again opened the scoring, followed with goals from Karl Hinds (penalty) and Harry Cardwell. That win began an unexpected and sensational run of 27 league wins out of 27 matches, with Bulls sealing ‘promotion’ to the Premier Division with their 27th victory, a 2-0 win at home to British Airways, their amazing achievements bringing the attention of the national media. Then the world went into lockdown due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, all league football was suspended before the FA made the decision to cancel the remainder of the non-league football season and render all of it null and void, in effect expunging Bulls’ record breaking season as if it never happened. 2020-21 means Bulls have it all to do again in Division One of the Combined Counties League.

The island of Jersey is nearer to France (only 14 miles) than England (87 miles) at its closest point and entering a club in the national league presents a major challenge both logistically and financially. Bulls and their opponents will have to fly to or from Gatwick airport to play each other so the club has to rely on the generous support of their commercial partners to survive. With a population of just over 100,000 people on an area of only 45 square miles, Jersey is classed as a ‘crown dependency’, independent in status from the UK and having its own laws and government. It also has its own currency and its own language, Jérriais – a dialect of French, though you will be hard pressed to hear anyone still speak it unless you find yourself down at the Farmers Club.
