I have to say I was so blown away by his story that I immediatly ordered more copies and gave them out to friends kids in both middle and high school to read. We are all aware of some of the backgrounds of basketball players (Allen Ivetson comes to mind) but I have never before read or heard a story so raw and expressive on what some of these players go through and what they overcome just to make it into college, much less into the pros. An amazing-can't - put- down book that should be in every middle school reading list and library. Thank you, Caron Butler!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Positive and Uplifting True Story about a Sport's Hero.By EvelyneMThis book was a selection of my bookclub. It particularly interested me, as during the time that this book takes place, I was teaching high school aged youth in Racine, (the location in the book). The book is well written and a realistic representation of events.. The revealing of the layers of the main character as well as seeing him evolve is central to why this reader was captivated by the book. It was also fun to know exactly where events took place when specific streets and locations were mentioned. It is a fast and enjoyable read! What a pleasure to know that someone can overcome negative influences and triumph over them!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Redemption!By P. E. KnopickFor those of us who enjoy college basketball, we know, when watching a game, that many of the players did not have easy childhoods, perhaps scarred by poverty, drugs and other problems. Caron Butler ended up in prison before he was 16 years old for selling drugs. If you expect a story about this player's exploits at UConn and in the pros, you will be disappointed, there is only one chapter about each. But if you expect a book about redemption, about turning things around, this is a wonderful book for adults and for high school students. Two-time All-Star and thirteen-year NBA veteran Caron Butler has an impressive basketball record. He was Big East Co-Player of the Year at UConn, the 10th overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft and a key player for the Dallas Mavericks in their championship-winning season in 2011.But before Butler had a chance to prove himself on the court, he spent his time trying to prove himself on the streets, as a gang member and drug dealer in his hometown of Racine, Wisconsin. He saw friends gunned down in the bloody street wars near his home, was arrested nearly 15 times and wound up behind bars and in solitary confinement before his 15th birthday. Tuff Juice shares Caron Butlerrsquo;s extraordinary journey from his delinquent youth in the streets of Racine to his role as an accomplished pro basketball player, dedicated husband and father, active philanthropist and burgeoning businessman. Along the way, the book explores the incredible impact his single motherrsquo;s unconditional love and his college coachrsquo;s unwavering support had on him, and what drives him to be so successful in basketball and in life. ldquo;Caron is an unbelievable role model, someone who got into trouble when he was young, then turned his life around and set a shining example for others.rdquo;mdash;Dwyane Wade, guard for the Miami Heat ldquo; This story is as good, as dramatic, and as inspirational as any Irsquo;ve dealt with in my professional career. Caron Butler should be applauded for turning his life around, for morphing into a role model, and for sharing his story so that others might learn from his example.rdquo;mdash;Mark Wahlberg, Producer/Actor ldquo;Caron Butler was one of the greatest players who ever wore a Heat uniform.rdquo;mdash;Pat Riley, former coach and current President of Basketball Operations for the Miami Heat If America loves redeemed bad guys with skills, this blood-and-guts memoir by NBA basketball star Butler should satisfy that appetite for granting second chances.... Butlerrsquo;s sports memoir. .provides a bold, candid opportunity to appreciate a talented, complicated athlete. (Publishers Weekly)About the AuthorCaron Butler is a veteran NBA All-Star and a dedicated member of the community. He is extremely active with organizations that specialize in youth outreach, especially in his hometown of Racine, Wisconsin. In addition to his extensive philanthropy Butler is also a burgeoning businessman with plans to own an NBA team in the future.
