ENGINEERING DEANS COUNCIL November 22, 2016 EXECUTIVEBOARD 2015-2016 Engineering is empowering society in unprecedented ways. It is at the core of all innovation, resulting in tremendous societal and economic benefits; it is the most important discipline to address current and emerging OFFICERS challenges in the US and on a global scale; and it provides new, imaginative ways to enrich life. A fundamental Gerald D. Holder requirement for growth of this enabling power, however, is for the engineering community to attract and CHAIR engage people from all segments of our society. The evolving demographic landscape of the US, the need for University of Pittsburgh constant economic competitiveness and the upholding of our core values to ensure equal opportunity and Gregory N. Washington access to all who seek it, all point to the importance of actively embracing diversity and inclusiveness in all our VICE CHAIR University of California, Irvine endeavors. Diversity and inclusiveness are essential for the development of creative solutions to the world's challenges and to enrich life. Nathan Kahl SECRETARY ASEE EDC Liaison While gains have been made in the participation of women, African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans in engineering in recent decades, significant progress is still needed to reach a level where the DIRECTORS engineering community fully embraces all segments of our increasingly diverse and vibrant society. In particular, we must further promote the pursuit of engineering education to all those who have been Katherine M. Banks Texas A&M University historically under-represented within our discipline; provide an educational experience that is demonstrably equitable and inclusive; and actively work to improve the broader engineering culture to fully engage the Debra Larson California Polytechnic State University diverse generations to come.

  • University Senate FROM
REPORT TO THE UNIVERSITY SENATE TO: University Senate FROM: Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs DATE: October 5, 2015 Establishment of a Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University Following the guidelines for the creation of new academic departments, and with the unanimous support from the University Senate, Stony Brook University has established a Department of Civil Engineering, effective July 1, 2015. An independent Department of Civil Engineering was needed in order to attract top students, recruit and retain the best faculty, and effectively engage with industry, government, funding agencies and donors. Department status was also needed to demonstrate our commitment to civil engineering, which will be an important element in the successful accreditation of the undergraduate program by ABET. Civil engineering is essential to a comprehensive college of engineering at a research university. In fact, 19 of the top 20 public research universities have strong departments of civil engineering. The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University is the only one on Long Island, public or private, and only the second department at a public university in New York City. Furthermore, the only other comprehensive (B.E./B.S. to Ph.D.) Department of Civil Engineering in the SUNY system is housed at the University of Buffalo. Therefore, the newly-created Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University will be the only SUNY program on Long Island, and the only SUNY program close to New York City and the eastern and southern regions of New York. Furthermore, there is a critical need for new civil engineers in the state of New York and nationally, as well as a crucial need to improve the sustainability and resiliency of our infrastructure systems.
