He’s performed with well-known local bands Beautiful Joe, The Co-Dependents and the Joe-Defendants. With Beautiful Joe, Steve appeared on the final episode of The Rita McNeil Show. He performed on a western Canadian tour with Jann Arden and The Huron Carol with Tom Jackson. The Co-Dependents Live Recording Event was #1 at Megatunes for two years. 1st Nick headline, Sept. ‘83 A legendary singer, songwriter and guitar player, Roy Forbes has over forty years of touring behind him. From the early days of small coffeehouses and opening act slots with artists like John Lee Hooker, Supertramp, The Earl Scruggs Review and Santana to eventually selling out his own shows and headlining most of the major folk music festivals in Canada, Roy has developed into one of Canada’s best loved acoustic performers. Roy has made a bunch of solo albums plus two with UHF, the “once-in-a-while” group he shares with Shari Ulrich and Bill Henderson. His first album Kid Full of Dreams earned a 1976 Juno nomination and 1998’s Crazy Old Moon got another Juno nomination and won a West Coast Music Award - one of several he’s won over the years. A compelling live performer, Roy’s extraordinary songs have been recorded and performed by many different artists. Chloe Albert (Alberta) First Nick Opener Apr. ‘09 Chloe’s debut CD, Dedicated State won a 2008 Canadian Folk Music Award for Emerging Artist of the Year. She earned a 2nd place prize for her song Honey Bee at the Calgary Folk Music Festival Songwriting Contest. The mission of the Canadian Folk Music Awards is to celebrate and promote Canadian folk music in 1st Ever Nickleoden Event! all its forms. Until their creation in 2005, no awards existed to celebrate the breadth and depth of folk music in Canada. Awards such as the Junos, East Coast Music Awards or the Western Canada Music Awards have a few categories that apply to folk and roots music but they offer only a restricted view of the genre. The judging process is similar to that of the two-stage elimination model used by the Junos via a randomly selected jury drawn from our community.

The Nick is a sponsor for the Best Contemporary Album CFMA. The CFMA Awards Gala and Concert and catered reception will take place at the University Theatre on Sunday, November 10 and will be hosted by CBC’s Shelagh Rogers and Benoit Bourque of La Bottine Souriante. Gala performers will be announced at a later date. Tickets for this event are now on sale at http://www. ucalgary.ca/tickets.

The Nick will present showcases by six 2013 CFMA nominees from various award categories, the night before the Gala award presentations. The nominees for 2013 Canadian Folk Music Awards will be released on September 26 and those performers chosen to showcase at the Nick will be announced after that. Nominees showcasing at the Nick will be posted on our website along with photos, . biographies and video links. Our evening format will feature three sets of music as usual, with two nominees sharing the stage in each set.

Annabelle Chvostek (Ontario) November 23 In 2004 Annabelle was selected to replace Cara Luft in the Juno-winning Wailin’ Jennys. A Nickelodeon Debut! Chvostek’s songs were repeatedly singled out by critics as highlights of the Jennys’ CD Firecracker, nominated for a Juno for Best Roots and Traditional Album. Devil’s Paintbrush Road was the 2006 #1 Canadian song on U.S. folk radio. She released her solo Resilience in 2008. It was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Album of the Year and became the second most played Canadian album on U.S. folk radio at the beginning of 2009. In 2010 she released Live From Folk Alley and two co-written duets with were released on his Juno winning Small Source of Comfort. On her latest release, Juno nominated Rise, she has managed to take a decades old art form, the protest song, and completely re-imagine it for a new era of activism.

Cayley Thomas (Alberta) A Nickelodeon Debut! This summer, in a session at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Cayley sang a heartfelt tribute to her late brother to earn a mid-set standing ovation. This 22 year old sounds like the muddy Mississippi came west on the North Saskatchewan whitewater. Raised on the riverbanks of Edmonton, Cayley is at home singing the blues of long winter nights, the jazz “Despite its’ weighty words, listening to Rise is an effortless of orange prairie mornings and the folk of everyday life. January 25, 2014 Jack Semple An exceptionally fluid guitarist, known for his epic and reeling guitar solos, Jack Semple is steeped in funky rhythm and blues and a virtuoso of rhythm and finger style magic. His most recent recording, In The Blue Lightis nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for Best Blues CD.

February 8, 2014 Pharis & Jason Romero Pharis and Jason Romero’s A Passing Glimpse, earned them a 2012 New Emerging Artist Canadian Folk Music Award and Americana Album of the Year at the 2012 Independent Music Awards. Drawn to early coun- try, old time, blues and bluegrass, Pharis writes songs about ageless char- acters. Jason is deft on banjo from early finger style to clawhammer.

February 22, 2014 J.P. Cormier J.P. is the winner of twelve East Coast Music Awards, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and more than thirty awards in fiddle, guitar and banjo competitions; he’s an incredible master of them all. He paints pictures of loves lost, towns disbanded, fishermen killed by their trade and the most important moments of his own life.

March 8, 2014 Karen Savoca Savoca charms audiences with a supple alto and a boundless range of expression. A gifted songwriter, she draws you into her world of humor and compassion, telling stories with grace and ease. Guitarist Pete Heitzman is a true virtuoso of groove. An Alaskan reviewer called him “the aurora borealis of guitar”.

March 22, 2014 Caladh Nua These five singers perform on banjo, fiddle, guitar, bodhrán, tin whistle and button accordion. The band has captured the essential qualities of traditional Irish music and balanced them finely with an innovative contemporary styling. Performing a vast repertoire of haunting songs and evocative tunes, the band continues to lead their listeners on a musical escapade.

April 5, 2014 Michael Jerome Browne Michael is a multi-instumentalist and three time Juno Award Nominee in both the roots and blues categories and the winner of the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Award for Solo Artist of the Year. He explores the many cultures and influences that gave birth to American Roots Music, Gospel, Blues, Old Time, Country, Soul and Cajun.

Remembering Bob Brozman (March 8, 1954 - April 23, 2013)

We are saddened to have lost an exceptional Nickelodeon performer. Bob Brozman played blues, , gypsy jazz and Hawaiian music. Either finger-style, slide, or strumming on his National resonator guitars, Bob was a virtuoso, and an amazing wizard of rhythm and time. Through his many recordings Bob Brozman will continue to inspire. Thank you old friend, you are missed. www.thenick.ca
