2015 is a year for WI celebrations as the movement celebrates it’s Centenary. Worleston WI are also celebrating. Formed in 1938, the Worleston September meeting was a birthday party complete with buffet, wine, a 77th birthday cake and bunting.

WI guests from the Federation, Malbank Group, Aston & District WI and & District WI were welcomed and six new ladies were welcomed to their first WI meeting. After singing Jerusalem, the ladies sadly held a minute silence in remembrance of Margaret Sandland who passed away recently. Margaret was a keen WI member and friend who supported Worleston WI through several key committee positions over many years. President Annita then welcomed Rosy Lomas who gave a wonderfully colourful talk and demonstration of her flower arranging artistry. There was a lot of laughter as Rosy regaled the ladies with humorous stories while deftly crafting her beautiful creations which she then presented to the ladies as raffle prizes. About a dozen ladies left the meeting with armfuls of wonderful displays and several ladies were glad they had a big car to safely take the displays home!!

18 THE COUNTRYSIDE IN SEPTEMBER The swallows are leaving us. I saw the last pair here a few days ago high in the sky. Last Saturday 5th September we were in Anglesey, and hearing the familiar chirruping I looked up and on the telegraph wires were about 20 gathering together for their long haul flight. What I did not expect to see was a pair swooping in and out of a farm barn clearly on a mission. With closer inspection there stuck to the beam was a nest with chicks – in September! This little clutch will presumably be making their incredible journey across the Channel to France, over the Pyrenees, through Spain, Morocco, across the Sahara and finally to South Africa for the winter. Next year when in Anglesey I will make a point of looking in that barn to see if they have returned. God speed little birds. With luck we could have an Indian summer. There is dazzling sunshine outside and the brightest butterflies have emerged. Peacocks and the stunning Red Admiral, although I have only seen two of the latter. Sadly and worryingly butterflies are becoming scarce. Sir David Attenborough has launched a campaign asking people to encourage butterflies into their gardens. Plant shrubs and flowers which attract them. Lavender, catmint, sedums, buddleja, and several others. . Sue Heap

20 Baked Alaska

No, it’s not a Mary Berry special about cooking posh desserts. It’s a play about the cooking of the earth. Yes, global warming but not as we normally hear about it. It’s extraordinary theatre for extraordinary times.

Commissioned by the Diocese of Lichfield, Christian Aid and Operation Noah, its style is “high-energy, seriously funny.”

It is performed by the Riding Lights Theatre Company which was founded in York over 30 years ago and which aims to create “unforgettable, enter- taining theatre in response to current issues and the hopes and fears of the world we share.”

Relevance The company could not have chosen a better time than this.

The play echoes Pope Francis’s concerns in the recent encyclical “Laudato Si’” and the issues it addresses are even more relevant as the world approaches the UN 2015 Climate Change Conference in December in Paris.

The conference objective is to achieve, for the first time in over 20 years of UN negotiations, a binding and universal agreement on climate, from all the nations of the world.
