Additionally, Hubei Province is well-known for its diverse landforms, including mountains, hills, mounds and plains. This area is called “The Province of Thousand Lakes” due to the abundance of water resources. Geographical names are exclusive names given to physical or anthropogenic geographic entities at specific spatial locations and are important signs by which humans understand natural and human activities. In this study, geographic information systems (GIS) technology is adopted to establish a geodatabase of geographical names with particular characteristics in Hubei Province and extract certain geomorphologic and environmental factors. -

Christie’s assembles a really interesting group of pieces for their autumn sale in Hong Kong. William Cleverley Alexander With a relatively short and restricted sourcing period, Christie’s have (1840-1916) assembled a really fine group of pieces for their sales which begin viewing this coming weekend. One of the most significant lots of the season and of the sale of Important Chinese Art is lot 3001, is a magnificent and large Northern Song dynasty Ding ‘lotus’ basin. Its interior displays wonderfully free carving of a lotus flower and foliage. This combined with its thin, luminous ivory glaze, is the hallmark of the best Ding pieces. It has an illustrious history in that it was owned by the famous English Victorian/Edwardian collector William Cleverly Alexander (1840-1916). Exhibited at the Manchester Art Gallery Lot 3003. A fine and rare yangcai ‘poppy’ cup, exhibition of 1913, it has only appeared at auction once at Sotheby’s in Yongzheng mark and period, 9.1cm diameter. -

From an interdisciplinary lens, interrogating the many interrelated elements of recovery, this dissertation examines the post-Wenchuan earthquake reconstruction and recovery. It explores questions about sense of home, civic participation and reconstruction primarily based on the phenomenon of the survivors of the Wenchuan Earthquake losing their sense of home after their post-disaster relocation and reconstruction. The following three aspects of the reconstruction are examined: 1) the influence of local residents’ previous memories of their original hometown on their relocation and the reconstruction of their social worlds and lives, 2) the civic participation that took place throughout the post-disaster reconstruction, 3) the government interventions overseeing and facilitating the entire post-disaster reconstruction. Based on fieldwork, archival and document research, memory workshops and walk-along interviews, a qualitative study was conducted with the aim of examining the earthquake survivors’ general memories of daily life and specific memories of utilizing space in their original hometown. -

Section 4.5 Sword Fight between a Runaway ‘Slave’ and a Thief Catcher This is the third case in the Book of Submitted Doubtful Cases that transpired in the wake of the Imperial instruction proclaimed by Liu Bang in 202 BCE and its resulting legislation (discussed in the preface to sec. 4.2) ordering the popula- tion displaced after the collapse of the Qin dynasty and the subsequent civil war to return to their natal homes and register themselves and their property with the Han authorities. Many who had formerly been enslaved could regis- ter themselves within thirty days and then return to their previous commoner lives, provided they had not committed any offense. As with the case documented in section 4.2, this case (dated one year ear- lier) was submitted from Jiangling County, located in present-day Jingzhou, Hubei, the former capital of the state of Chu, by the same Assistant Magistrate Ao, but this time the record mentions his superior, Magistrate Yu. The case was first submitted for adjudication to officials at the commandery, where the two main offenders were sentenced, but then forwarded to the Han capital, pre- sumably because the Nan Commandery officials wanted their judgment of the matter confirmed. The chief judicial officer of the empire, the Commandant of the Court, most likely Xuan Yi 宣義 (d. 181 BCE), requested Emperor Gaozu himself to pronounce final judgment, presumably because he, too, was not completely sure whether Nan Commandery had judged the case correctly. The Emperor did indeed confirm the judgment decided by the lower court. -

Based on data of measured and natural runoff and suspended sediment load (SSL) in the WRB, the connections between runoff and SSL from the WRB and deposition in the LWR, the elevation of Tonggguan Hydrology Station, and deposition in the LYR are analyzed. For the compound effects of human activity and climate change in the WRB, the amount of deposition reduction in the LWR during 2000-2009 is about three times what it decreased dur- ing 1970-1979. For per square kilometers of soil conservation, the effect of human activities in the WRB on deposition in the LWR during period of 2000-09 is about four times that of the period of 1970-1979. As decreased runoff and SSL from the WRB, deposition in the LYR decreased during the periods of 1970-1979 and 1990-1999, while deposition in the LYR increased during the periods of 1980-1989 and 2000-2009. For the planned reservoir in the Jing River Basin, the decreased deposition in the LYR may be smaller than that of the LWR. -

He was born a prince during the Liang Dynasty, became Crown Prince upon his older brother's death, and eventually succeeded to the crown after the Liang court had come under the control of a rebel named Hou Jing (d. 552). He was murdered by Hou before long and was posthumously given the title of "Emperor of Jianwen (Jianwen Di)" by his younger brother Xiao Yi (508-554). Xiao's writing of amorous poetry was blamed for the fall of the Liang Dynasty by Confucian scholars, and adverse criticism of his so-called "decadent" Palace Style Poetry has continued for centuries. By analyzing Xiao Gang within his own historical context, I am able to develop a more refined analysis of Xiao, who was a poet, a filial son, a caring brother, a sympathetic governor, and a literatus with broad and profound learning in history, religion and various literary genres. Fewer than half of Xiao's extant poems, not to mention his voluminous other writings and many of those that have been lost, can be characterized as "erotic" or "flowery". -

Water is the infrastructure and the basic industry of the national economic and social development. With the economic growth, the pressure on scarce resources and ecological environment protection is highlighted. The need for government at all levels to speed up the water investment and improve people's welfare is pressing. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment of water investment in Shaanxi Province is of great practical significance. Relatively speaking, Shaanxi Province is short of water resources with less total amount and per capita share. In addition, the spatial distribution of water resources is also extremely unreasonable: the southern part of Shaanxi Province which is part of the Yangtze River basin takes up over 70% while the northern part which is highly populated with fast industrial development only shares 30% of it. The conflict between the demand for water resources and the distribution, to some extent, restrict the social and economic development. The Shaanxi Provincial Government has put the water sector in an important place. It is even so from 2010 to now with a dramatic increase on investment, reaching a total investment amount of 22.408 billion RMB in 2013. -
