in the MiamiValley History Offke Aeronautical Systems Center Air Force Materiel Command ii FOREWORD Less than one hundred years ago, Lord Kelvin, the most prominent scientist of his generation, remarked that he had not “the smallest molecule of faith’ in any form of flight other than ballooning. Within a decade of his damningly pessimistic statement, the Wright brothers were routinely puttering through the skies above Huffman Prairie, pirouetting about in their frail pusher biplanes. They were there because, unlike Kelvin, they saw opportunity, not difficulty, challenge, not impossibility. And they had met that challenge, seized that opportunity, by taking the work of their minds, transforming it by their hands, making a series of gliders and, then, finally, an actual airplane that they flew. Flight testing was the key to their success. The history of flight testing encompassesthe essential history of aviation itself. For as long as humanity has aspired to fly, men and women of courage have moved resolutely from intriguing concept to practical reality by testing the result of their work in actual flight. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, notable pioneers such asthe French Montgolfier brothers, the German Otto Lilienthal, and the American Octave Chanute blended careful study and theoretical speculation with the actual design, construction, and testing of flying vehicles. Flight testing reallycame ofage with the Wright bro!hers whocarefullycombined a thorough understanding of the problem and potentiality of flight with-for their time-sophisticated ground and flight-test methodolo- gies and equipment. After their success above the dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17,1903, the brothers determined to refine their work and generate practical aircraft capable of routine operation. -

THE QUANDARY OF ALLIED LOGISTICS FROM D-DAY TO THE RHINE By Parker Andrew Roberson November, 2018 Director: Dr. Wade G. Dudley Program in American History, Department of History This thesis analyzes the Allied campaign in Europe from the D-Day landings to the crossing of the Rhine to argue that, had American and British forces given the port of Antwerp priority over Operation Market Garden, the war may have ended sooner. This study analyzes the logistical system and the strategic decisions of the Allied forces in order to explore the possibility of a shortened European campaign. Three overall ideas are covered: logistics and the broad-front strategy, the importance of ports to military campaigns, and the consequences of the decisions of the Allied commanders at Antwerp. The analysis of these points will enforce the theory that, had Antwerp been given priority, the war in Europe may have ended sooner. D-Day and the Battle of Normandy: 75th Anniversary Debate on 4 June 2019 Summary This year will mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day: the landings of Allied forces on the Normandy coast during the Second World War.1 On 6 June 1944, the Allies launched a combined naval, air and land attack on Nazi-occupied France. Codenamed Operation ‘Overlord’, the landings on the beaches of Normandy marked the start of a “long and costly campaign” to liberate north-west Europe from German occupation.2 On the morning of D-Day, airborne forces parachuted into drop zones across northern France and ground troops landed across five assault beaches. Naval vessels escorted and landed ground troops, carried out bombardments on German coastal defences and provided artillery support for the invading troops. By the end of the day, the Allies had established a foothold along the coast and began their advance into France. By the end of August 1944, the “Germans were in full retreat out of France”.3 To mark the 75th anniversary, the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Royal British Legion and Portsmouth City Council have planned a series of events to take place in Portsmouth and Normandy in June 2019. This will include a specially-chartered ship, which will carry 300 D-Day veterans. On 4 June 2019, the House of Lords is scheduled to debate a motion moved by the Deputy Leader of the House of Lords, Earl Howe, to take note of the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Operation Market Garden WWII
Operation Market Garden WWII Operation Market Garden (17–25 September 1944) was an Allied military operation, fought in the Netherlands and Germany in the Second World War. It was the largest airborne operation up to that time. The operation plan's strategic context required the seizure of bridges across the Maas (Meuse River) and two arms of the Rhine (the Waal and the Lower Rhine) as well as several smaller canals and tributaries. Crossing the Lower Rhine would allow the Allies to outflank the Siegfried Line and encircle the Ruhr, Germany's industrial heartland. It made large-scale use of airborne forces, whose tactical objectives were to secure a series of bridges over the main rivers of the German- occupied Netherlands and allow a rapid advance by armored units into Northern Germany. Initially, the operation was marginally successful and several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured. However, Gen. Horrocks XXX Corps ground force's advance was delayed by the demolition of a bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal, as well as an extremely overstretched supply line, at Son, delaying the capture of the main road bridge over the Meuse until 20 September. At Arnhem, the British 1st Airborne Division encountered far stronger resistance than anticipated. In the ensuing battle, only a small force managed to hold one end of the Arnhem road bridge and after the ground forces failed to relieve them, they were overrun on 21 September. The rest of the division, trapped in a small pocket west of the bridge, had to be evacuated on 25 September. The Allies had failed to cross the Rhine in sufficient force and the river remained a barrier to their advance until the offensives at Remagen, Oppenheim, Rees and Wesel in March 1945. -

He became prime minister in May 1940 following a German blitzkrieg (lightning war) against Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. He then played a pivotal role in building a global alliance to stop the German juggernaut. One of the greatest orators of the century, Churchill raised the spirits of his countrymen through the war’s darkest days as Germany threatened to invade Great Britain and unleashed a devastating nighttime bombing program on London and other major cities. The material has been compiled from a multitude of sources the first of which is my research in the Danish National and Military archives, the second is material from the archives of Flyvevåbnet with which I had a fruitful cooperation in the years 1966 to 1980 and the third are the now (fortunately) many books and magasines as well as the Internet which contains information about Danish military aircraft. The pictures in Volume 1 and Volume 2-the photo album- have mainly been selected from the viewpoint of typicality and rarety and whereever possible pictures of operational aircraft in colour has been chosen. Most of the b/w picures in some way originate from the FLV historical archives, some were originally discovered there by me, whereas others have surfaced later. -

INTRODUCTION To-date I’ve written 6 Reference Guides on the British built and designed sporting gliders of what I might term the “wooden” era – Slingsbys, Elliotts of Newbury, Abbott Baynes (Scuds), BAC, the Scott gliders, and the Bill Manuel gliders. These account for at least 98% of all the wooden gliders ever built in Great Britain. There are of course a few smaller manufacturers, especially in the formative days of the British gliding movement in the early 1930s, RFD and Cloudcraft are two of these. Additionally there’s a plethora of “one offs”, principally Primaries, again mostly built in the early 1930s. I don’t propose to write these up as for the great majority of the remaining 2% we’re talking 80 years ago at least, and there’s no connect at all with the modern day and consequently very little interest unless it’s for the outright gliding aficionado. However, whilst they’re most definitely not sporting gliders there is one subject I think there is a justification to cover, and that’s the one of British military gliders. Spawned by the Second World War military gliders held centre stage for only a very few years, the advent of the troop carrying helicopter consigning them to history. Note all of the British military gliders were named after famous military figures whose name began with an “H”.
