U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Horse and Burro Management at Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge Environmental Assessment Before Horse Gather, August 2004 September 2002 After Horse Gather, August 2005 Front Cover: The left two photographs were taken one year apart at the same site, Big Spring Creek on Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. The first photograph was taken in August 2004 at the time of a large horse gather on Big Spring Butte which resulted in the removal of 293 horses. These horses were placed in homes through adoption. The photograph shows the extensive damage to vegetation along the ripar- ian area caused by horses. The second photo was taken one-year later (August 2005) at the same posi- tion and angle, and shows the response of vegetation from reduced grazing pressure of horses. Woody vegetation and other responses of the ecosystem will take many years for restoration from the damage. An additional photograph on the right of the page was taken in September 2002 at Big Spring Creek. The tall vegetation was protected from grazing by the cage on the left side of the photograph. Stubble height of vegetation outside the cage was 4 cm, and 35 cm inside the cage (nearly 10 times the height). The intensity of horse grazing pressure was high until the gather in late 2004. Purebred Dog Breeds into the Twenty-First Century: Achieving Genetic Health for Our Dogs BY JEFFREY BRAGG WHAT IS A CANINE BREED? What is a breed? To put the question more precisely, what are the necessary conditions that enable us to say with conviction, "this group of animals constitutes a distinct breed?" In the cynological world, three separate approaches combine to constitute canine breeds. Dogs are distinguished first by ancestry , all of the individuals descending from a particular founder group (and only from that group) being designated as a breed. Next they are distinguished by purpose or utility, some breeds existing for the purpose of hunting particular kinds of game,others for the performance of particular tasks in cooperation with their human masters, while yet others owe their existence simply to humankind's desire for animal companionship. Finally dogs are distinguished by typology , breed standards (whether written or unwritten) being used to describe and to recognize dogs of specific size, physical build, general appearance, shape of head, style of ears and tail, etc., which are said to be of the same breed owing to their similarity in the foregoing respects. The preceding statements are both obvious and known to all breeders and fanciers of the canine species. Nevertheless a correct and full understanding of these simple truisms is vital to the proper functioning of the entire canine fancy and to the health and well being of the animals which are the object of that fancy. It is my purpose in this brief to elucidate the interrelationship of the above three approaches, to demonstrate how distortions and misunderstandings of that interrelationship now threaten the health of all of our dogs and the very existence of the various canine breeds, and to propose reforms which will restore both balanced breed identity and genetic health to CKC breeds. -

List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". Mules and Hinnies Factsheet
FACTSHEET: OWNERS MULES AND HINNIES Mules and hinnies are similar. They are both a cross between a horse and a donkey, with unique characteristics that make them special. Because they are so similar, the terms ‘mule’ and ‘hinny’ are used interchangeably, with hinnies often being referred to as mules. KEY FACTS ABOUT MULES AND HINNIES: Mule: The result of a donkey stallion mating with a female horse. Mules tend to have the head of a donkey and extremities of a horse. Hinny: The result of a horse stallion mating with a female donkey. Hinnies are less common than mules and there might be subtle differences in appearance. Size: Varies greatly depending on the stallion and mare. Ranging from 91-172 cm. Health: Hardy and tough. They often have good immune systems. Strength: Extremely strong. They pull heavy loads and carry much heavier weights than donkeys or horses of a similar size. Behaviour: Intelligent and sensitive. They can have unpredictable reactions. Appearance: Ears smaller than a donkey’s, the same shape as a horse’s. The mane and tail of a hinny is usually similar to a horse. Vocalisation: A mixture of a donkey’s ‘bray’ and a horse’s ‘whinny’. Sex: Male is a ‘horse mule’ (also known as a ‘john’ or ‘jack’). Female is a ‘mare mule’ (also known as a ‘molly’). Young: A ‘colt’ (male) or ‘filly’ (female). What is hybrid vigour? Hybrid = a crossbreed Vigour = hardiness or resilience • ‘Interbreeding’ (crossbreeding) can remove weaker characteristics and instead pass on desirable inherited traits. This is ‘hybrid vigour’, a term often associated with mules and hinnies. -

The Effect on Performance in Descendents of New Forest Pony Stallions, That Have the Clc-1 Gene Mutations That Leads to Congenit
The effect on performance in sports in descendents of CLCN1 gene mutation carrier New Forest pony stallions Authors: D.M. Dickhoff; I.D. Wijnberg Abstract Aim of the study: To determine if ponies descending from a CLCN1 gene mutation carrier stallion perform better in sports, compared to ponies that do not descent from a CLCN1 gene mutation carrier stallion. Study design: Data analysis of 11.414 New Forest ponies, in which the relationship between the descent of the ponies and their sport performance are analyzed. Methods: Ponies were divided in jumping, dressage and eventing categories. They were listed categorically from the lowest category to the highest and descendents from mutation carrier stallions were marked. Statistical analysis with logistic regression between the sport categories and within the categories has been performed using SPSS version 19. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Ponies descending from a mutation carrying stallion are significantly better performing in jumping. The odds of finding a descent in the highest jumping category is 7.6 compared to the lowest. In dressage, descendents from a gene mutation carrier stallion are performing significantly better, with an odds of 4.1 for performing in the highest category. In eventing, the odds of finding a descendent from a mutation carrying stallion in the highest category is 2.9 compared to the lowest. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Ponies that are descendants of a mutation carrying stallion are performing significantly better in jumping, dressage and eventing. This conclusion might lead to breeding programs which includes stallions who carry this mutation, aiming to breed better performing ponies in equine sports, which is in contrast of the aim of the Studbook to eradicate the mutation. -
1 Nature of Horse Breeds
1 Nature of Horse Breeds The horse captures our imagination because of its beauty, power and, most of all, its personality. Today, we encounter a wide array of horse breeds, developed for diverse purposes. Much of this diversity did not exist at the time of domestication of the horse, 5500 years ago (Chapter 2). Modern breeds were developed through genetic selection and based on the variety of uses of horses during the advance of civilization. Domestication of the horse revolutionized civilization. A rider could go farther and faster than people had ever gone before. Horses provided power to till more land and move heavier loads. Any sort of horse could provide these benefits, as long as it could be domesticated. However, over time people became more discern- ing about the characteristics of their horses. The intuitive and genetic principle that “like begat like” led people to choose the best horses as breeding stock. At the same time, people in different parts of the world used different criteria when select- ing horses. The horses were raised in different climates, fed different rations, exposed to different infectious diseases, and asked to do different types of work. Genetic differences could and did have a large impact on these traits. Over time, selection led to the creation of diverse types of horse around the world. We use a variety of terms to describe the genetic diversity among groups of animals, both to distinguish horses from other animals and examine differences among the different types of horses. Those terms include genus, species, popula- tion, landrace, and breed. -
2020 Autumn Stallion Inspection RESULTS with Comment
New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society 2020 Autumn Stallion Inspection As with most 2020 events, the planned April inspection had to be cancelled, but with Covid-19 restrictions easing into the autumn, all owners on the April list were invited to what was necessarily a ‘behind closed doors’ inspection held with strict adherence to the government’s current Covid-19 regulations. With most owners taking up the offer, it was a busy morning, on a lovely sunny day. The top colt, by a good margin, was Mallards Wood Saint John, bred by Robert Maton. It was most pleasing that two colts who had come through the Futurity Scheme, Limekiln Shamrock and Mogshade Quarryman, made the top five, with Shamrock being the top Forest-bred colt. All the approved colts must now complete the vetting and DNA and PSSM1 testing procedures before they are fully licensed.
