LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL ’S DESK...

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! I am excited to share that this is my thirteenth year at Desert Vista, eight as an assistant principal and now in my fifth year as the principal. It is a pleasure and a joy to start another year with your children! We started our year by being awarded the Interscholastic Association Harold Slemmer Overall Excellence Award for 6-A for the 2017-2018 school year! This award exemplifies the overall success of Desert Vista’s academic and extra-curricular accomplishments and I am so proud of our school community for their excellence and dedication. This honor would not be possible without having everyone’s involvement and we are so very fortunate to have the support and commitment of our families, students, staff, community and district. This is the second year in a row DV has won this award.

I am looking forward to another incredible year of ‘Excellence Through Performance’ in IMPORTANT all areas. We received our state assessment data results for AzMERIT, Science AIMS DATES and AP exams and it is a pleasure to share those results within the following pages. As many of you may recall, SB1191 was signed into law on February 20, 2015, which Aug. 29—Club Fair immediately ended the AIMS high school graduation requirements. However, the Sept. 3—Labor Day (no Science AIMS was and currently remains mandatory for all Biology or Honors Biology school) students which, like the AzMerit, is also a part of determining school letter grades. The Sept. 18—Blood Drive school letter grades/ labeling will be determined by the weight of the following criteria: Sept. 19—Half Day (Staff 30% proficiency in AzMERIT English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, and Science AIMS; Development) 20% growth in AzMERIT ELA and Math; 10% proficiency and growth in English Oct. 1-5—Spirit Week Language Learner (ELL) Azella Scores; 20% Graduation Rate; and 20 % College and Oct. 5—Tukee Bowl @ Mtn Career Ready including SAT, ACT, CTE (Career and technical Education, AP courses and Pointe HS AzMERIT. The scheduled window of time for Science AIMS testing is set for the end of Oct. 8-12—Fall Break (no March, and the AzMERIT testing is scheduled for both the end of October (for those school) who completed summer school courses) and then at the beginning to mid-April. Oct. 17—Yearbook Photo Re Specific dates and schedules will be provided once confirmed. -takes Oct. 24—PSAT I am thrilled to share that our graduating class of 2018 was offered over $33.3 million Oct. 26—Homecoming in scholarship opportunities. As we embark on our 23rd year, we will continue to Game achieve ‘Excellence Through Performance’ due to the partnership we have with our Oct. 27—Homecoming families, outstanding students and the exceptional teaching and support staff at DV. College Visits:

 In-state schools visit monthly  Out-of-state schools visit throughout the year  Students must sign-up in Naviance to attend. Space is limited and many will reach capacity.  Posted on Counseling Department Calendar, sent via Facebook, text and/or email.

DV currently has over 30 college/university visits scheduled and is adding more daily. To view the calendar visit https://www.tempeunion.org/DV- Counseling- Calendar#calendar4106/20180817/month to attend a college rep visit at DV, students access college visits in Naviance and shown below. For evening visits on and off-campus, register at the link above.

NEW PROCEDURE FOR ELEVATOR USE

Desert Vista has a new procedure to obtain an electronic elevator card for those students who are on crutches or a wheelchair. Students needing to obtain a cardkey will do the following:

 Obtain an elevator permission form by seeing the school nurse prior to your school day beginning , complete the form with both parent & student signatures and bring it with you to the nurse.  Submit your doctor/trainer order information, with an estimated time of need for the use of the elevator, to the nurse to support your need.  Nurse will provide note to leave class few minutes early to get through halls, as well as collect elevator form.  Elevator card will be obtained from the book store, as a $25 lien will be placed on the student’s account until the elevator card is returned.  Because the elevator card is now electronic, it will be deactivated on the completion date listed on student’s form.  Should a student foresee needing an extension of time for his/her elevator card, a student will provide that documentation to the school nurse prior to the deactivation date listed on his/her original paperwork. Thank you in advance for your cooperation & help keeping our students safe! Desert Vista Storm Report Page 4

S TUDENT DROP- OFF

AND PICK- UP

Our Security Staff has become concerned that procedures for picking up students are often being disregarded in the student parking lot at the end of the day. Security is looking out for the safety of your children, and over the years has created a system for parents to pick up their student in an efficient manner. It is not the perfect solution; however, the SAFETY of the children comes first! Trying to circumvent the system and avoiding Security directing traffic may result in an unfortunate accident. We want to be proactive in preventing any such mishaps. We ask for your patience and respect for our Security Staff as they are there for the safety of your children. Timing is everything, if you’re coming before or when the bell rings at the end of the school day, you can expect delays. If you arrive 10 - 15 minutes later your experience will be vastly different and move much quicker. From the time the bell rings at 3:12 PM until approximately 3:30 PM when the lot is almost empty is 16 minutes. Staggering your pickup time will reduce everyone’s stress and risk of mishaps.

NO PICK UP IN BUS TURNAROUND.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE

Welcome & Welcome Back!

The summer heat is still blazing, so be sure student has a refillable water bottle to keep hydrated. We are fortunate to have 6 Hydration Stations around campus and that helps prevent headaches, dizziness and that exhausted feeling! Breakfast is another great way to be sure your student has brain fuel on board and will be able to be more attentive & want to learn throughout the morning! Even if it’s cold pizza-it’s good for growing minds & bodies. It is proven the BEST sleep our bodies get is in the hours before midnight-so turn off those cellphones, computers & TVs and get to bed! It is better to set your alarm to get up earlier & do that homework in the wee morning hours! Remember-the health office DOES NOT carry stock ibuprofen or Tylenol, so parents, if you drop some off at the health office, it will be kept locked up for them, but always available. WE ARE A DRUG FREE CAMPUS, WHICH MEANS NOT EVEN OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS CAN BE CARRIED BY STUDENTS OR DISTRIBUTED TO PEERS. All medications are kept in the health office! LIBRARY/MEDIA C ENTER

The Library will be open at 7:15 AM each day and close on regular school days at 4 pm.

The Campus will close shortly after the final bell (2:15 p.m.) on early release days.

Usage during school hours will require a teacher-signed pass. No food or drink (with the exception of water) is allowed in the Library or the computer labs. The Library will be open during lunch time for students who need to work on school-related projects and assignments. Any other activities such as playing games or socializing must take place in other designated areas on campus that remain open during lunch time. We will continue to adhere to the fire code capacity, and as such, students will be advised that if they are not doing school-related work and/or we are at or nearly over capacity, they will be asked to leave the Library to make room for students who are waiting to enter to do school work. We thank everyone for their continued support and understanding.

Please contact Mr. TJ Snyder if there are any questions about these policies.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NOVEL CHECK-O UT PROCEDURES

The English Department has over 20,000 copies of novels that students at every grade level check out for reading and study during their novel units. English teachers bring their classes to the Library to check novels in and out, resulting in automatic tracking of late or lost books, making the whole process easier on the teachers!

Students must return their previously-used novels in order to get the next one. Please help your students remember to turn in their completed novels so they can obtain the next one without delay. Additionally, lost books must be paid for in the Bookstore before another may be checked out.

E NGLISH TEXTBOOKS

Textbooks distributed for Honors Freshman English, Sophomore English, Junior English, and Senior English need to be returned to the bookstore. Desert Vista Storm Report Page 20
