Biological Sciences The Division has hosted two diversity-related workshops for faculty: one on diversity, in general, and MU Diversity Training for Faculty Division one on diversity in the hiring process. Biological Sciences NSF Biology Scholars partnership with select St. Louis high schools to provide scholarships to academically talented, MU Division Program financially needy students to enroll in and complete a BA or BS in biological sciences at MU We co-enroll students from URGs in general education classes as a strategy to help encourage a Biological Sciences MU Co-Enroll URG Freshmen supportive, welcoming environment. Co-enrollment helps ensure that students do not find Division themselves to be the only minority in a classroom. All peer advisors go through training. This training includes representatives from MU’s Office of Biological Sciences Disability Services and MU’s Counseling Office. Among other things, both address issues that put MU Peer Advisors Division certain student populations at risk of failing, how to identify students who are at risk, and campus resources to help students. Outreach to first-generation Biological Sciences Offered in the fall to incoming freshman biology majors, this seminar is designed to help first- MU students Seminar for First- Division generation college students adjust and acclimate to the university setting. Generation Students Dr. Lissa Behm-Morawitz and Dr. Astrid Villamil continue to develop a Virtual Diversity Education MU Communication Virtual Diversity Education (VDE) program designed to increase diversity awareness and change the MU campus culture. A communication professional/practitioner visits one of our undergraduate Communication courses MU Communication Professor for a Day and discuss their work with our students. A particular goal of this program is to invite to our classrooms communication professionals from underrepresented groups. English majors must take one (3-hour) course that focuses on issues such as race, ethnicity, gender, MU English Course Requirement or sexuality. Journal Club: Research Psychological MU Articles on Diversity Related Weekly reading of a selected research article related to diversity and discussion of article. Sciences Topics Psychological Committee on Diversity & Initiate and support all department-wide initiatives to enhance diversity and inclusion in the MU Sciences Inclusion department at all levels, including undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff. Women & Gender Women's History Month Co-organize Women’s History Month Activities with the WHM committee. WGST manages the MU Studies Programming budget for WHM and coordinates bringing in a speaker for a campus WHM presentation. Women & Gender WGST hosts a lecture series that focuses on contemporary issues related to gender, women, and MU Lecture Series Studies sexuality. A pod-mentoring program for first and second year underrepresented students who are looking to MU Business RAMP excel academically and in leadership A three semester mentoring opportunity for ethnically diverse freshman students who are MU Business LEAD interested in pursuing a career in accounting. An initiative designed to leverage the skills, resources and infrastructure of higher education to offer MU Business EBV cutting-edge, experiential training in entrepreneurship and small business management to post-9/11 veterans and their families. Bottom Line for Diversity This day-long event focuses on helping TCoB students understand the importance of embracing the MU Business Conference culture of excellence that diversity in the workforce cultivates. Diversity and Cultural The goal of this course is to strengthen students’ understanding on diversity issues such as social Parks, Recreation & Competence in Parks, inequality, prejudice, social justice, and intergroup relationship. It aims to enhance students’ ability MU Tourism Recreation, Sport and to Tourism = PRT 2101 understand and work with individuals from various backgrounds in their professional career. In August of 2015, The College of Education launched The Bridge as a “brave space” for students, MU Education The Bridge faculty, and staff to develop and expand their cultural knowledge, awareness, and competence. Established in 2010, the Diversity Committee of the College of Education has invested time and resources to build collaboration, increase awareness, and foster support to realize a vision for the MU Education Diversity Committee inclusion, diversity, and equity within the College of Education, MU campus, and greater Columbia community. Allows students to dedicate their time and talents to serve at rural and urban schools and MU Education Weekenders communities throughout Missouri. The program expanded to include two out-of-state destinations: Detroit, Michigan (Spring 2015) and Atlanta, Georgia (Spring 2016). The Coalition was established in 1998 as a part of the Department’s focus on diversity, where faculty Coaliton of Cultural and students could develop unique and innovative multicultural programs. The activities in the MU Education Competency Coalition have furthered our Department’s commitment to being a nationally recognized leader in diversity. Focuses on engineering programs specifically to utilize the degree specific as well as career oriented resources and support programs within the college while connecting students to programs across campus. Using this program to effectively monitor the recruitment, matriculation, academic MU Engineering Diversity Scholars Program performance, retention, and graduation of the underrepresented minority students is vital to growing the overall quality of undergraduate diversity students enrolled in the College of Engineering. Scholarships are available to minority students (African American, Hispanic, and American Indian) to attend the COE Summer Camp. 30 students are awarded this opportunity each year. Students Summer Camp Diversity MU Engineering participate in a week long summer engineering camp to promote the COE and continues to be a Scholarship recruitment tool to encourage and motivate high school students to consider MU as their academic home for their engineering education. The Student Services Inclusivity Board was formed in March 2015 as the need arose to develop a unified student response to issues of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religious Student Services Inclusivity affiliation, socioeconomic status, ability status and any other identity inside the College of MU Engineering Board Engineering. We have served as a sounding board for students’ concerns and have been undergoing regular diversity & inclusion training using the campus’ existing resources. The board is comprised of existing student leaders who have shown outstanding initiative in response to these issues. MU College of Engineering held 2 “diversity matters” open forums. All engineering students, faculty and staff members were invited to attend to share their perspectives on diversity and inclusion in MU Engineering Diversity Open Forums the College with Dean Elizabeth Loboa. A roundtable event was held for everyone to plan solutions to the diversity issues within the college. The College of Engineering has several national student organizations that create safe space and Minority Student help students grow academically and professionally. They are the National Society of Black Engineers MU Engineering Organizations (NSBE), The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), The Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE), OSTEM (Out in STEM), The Society of Asian Scientist and Engineers (SASE). Diversity, Inclusion, & Equity This committee is comprised of staff and faculty members who are committed to changing the MU Engineering Task Force Committee climate of the College of Engineering. The College of Engineering invites students from predominately low income, under resourced, under MU Engineering Explore Engineering Day represented population high schools to participate

These inventors made items like the light bulb, cotton gin, and mass production using an assembly line. These inventors created something that did not exist before. Entrepreneurs also create things by combining resources and ideas to solve problems or market needs ‐‐‐ some of which may be new inventions but often times are new uses or ways of doing things. Entrepreneurs create markets for products where none existed before. The computer industry has an amazing number of entrepreneurs, such as Steve Jobs of Apple and Bill Gates of Microsoft being two of the most prominent in the industry. All across Arkansas entrepreneurs have brought products to the market. A study conducted by the University of Michigan and Florida International University that tracks entrepreneurial activity over time reports that after a 20 percent dip in 2004, the number of U.S. entrepreneurs increased by 30 percent in 2005, with more than 23 million people starting new businesses or managing firms less than four years old.

The rally started in Peace Park to stand with local Muslims. A representative of the Islamic Center of Central Missouri led about 200 people from the park to the mosque at the corner of Fifth and Locust streets, where they were greeted with cookies, snacks and juice. The marchers left their signs and flowers on the front steps of the mosque and then returned to Peace Park. CPD faces allegations of illegally recording client-attorney calls The complaint was filed against the Columbia Police Department by attorney Stephen Wyse on Jan. 23. Wyse filed the complaint after he read about a drunk driving case in the Columbia Daily Tribune, in which cops violated attorney-client privilege by covertly observing and recording the conversation. Federal law makes it illegal to intentionally intercept, disclose or use any wire, oral or electronic communication through the use of a “device,” and law enforcement officers may only wiretap a conversation in which one of the parties involved in the conversation has consented to the recording.

INTRODUCTION This collection contains the business accounts, tax receipts, correspondence, legal documents, deeds, and miscellaneous papers of the Hickman family of Boone County, Missouri. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were deposited at the State Historical Society of Missouri by Paul Q. Sapp in 1944. Additions to the collection were made by Mrs. Albertise Coon Reppy of Hillsboro, Missouri on 23 June 1955, and Mrs. Ruth Rollins Westfall on 21 September 1973 (Accession no. 1033). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH David M. Hickman (1788-1851) first visited Missouri in 1817, returning to Bourbon County, Kentucky where he married Eliza Johnston, the daughter of William and Rachel Johnston, also of Bourbon County, in 1818. David Hickman and his wife emigrated to Boone County, Missouri in 1822 along with his father-in-law, William Johnston, and other relatives and slaves. Hickman purchased property and established his family in what is now southern Columbia. The Hickman's welcomed three sons into the family: William T., born 2 September 1819, David Henry, born 11 November 1821, and James, born in 1824. Eliza Johnston Hickman died on 14 June 1827 at the age of 24. Twenty months later, Hickman married Cornelia Bryan, another Kentucky émigré. The couple added four sons and one daughter to their family. In 1829, Hickman and some of his neighbors in the southern Two Mile Prairie area organized the Bonne Femme Academy for male students on the north bank of Bonne Femme Creek, about six miles south of Columbia.

They were the opening act of the Spring Concert, followed by four quartet ensembles and performances by the Junior Sinfonia and Young Artists Philharmonic. The Conservatory took their first tour trip in 2018. They traveled to Chicago to perform as part of the National Festival of the States and performed with the Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project. The Hot Summer Nights Festival celebrated 15 years in 2018. Maestro Kirk Trevor and Assistant Conductor Matthew Straw led the Missouri Symphony Orchestra through 20 concerts over six weeks. The Masterworks series began with Verdi Requiem, a tribute to Founder and Conductor Laureate Maestro Hugo Vianello. “Mostly Mozart” featured the Resident Opera Artists, who performed La Bohème the following week. The production was directed by Christine Seitz of the Show-Me Opera and University of Missouri. A Charlie Chaplin Triptych with accompaniment from the Missouri Symphony Orchestra was a crowd pleaser, and the annual Patriotic Pops performance brought back the Resident Opera Artists in a festive 4th of July concert. Pops performances for the festival included a collaboration with the Missouri Contemporary Ballet and western swing group Asleep at the Wheel, fronted by Ray Benson.
