MEET THE MELENDEZ FAMILY It’s off to the Navy for Nahum Melendez saying, “After years of complete military inactivity, today I resume my drilling duties as a Navy Chaplain. For some reason I’m feeling nervous.” He asks for our prayers while he is away. Then there’s his wife Vickie’s opinion: “Military life: Your husband wakes up at 4:00 am to be ready for training. Then you hear him almost destroying the house because he can’t find some papers he needs today. You wake up, you start helping him, but you’re looking for some military papers that you have no idea what they look like or what may be written on them. But you help, only to discover that the papers were in his desk all this time. One hour looking for something that was always in his desk. Daughter Dalia will be staying at home with mommy while daddy is helping people. Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) Chaplain Nahum Melendez has been commissioned as a military chaplain and is able to minister to military personnel, veterans and their families. In this role, he will offer spiritual and moral support to our military community. Chaplain Nahum Melendez was recognized in a special ceremony on Friday, January 19, 2018, in the CTMC chapel. “These men and women have a unique set of challenges, fears and needs,” Melendez explains. “My role is to foster peace, resilience, and healing. Even if the families simply need someone to pray for them or to guide them to appropriate resources, I am available to them.” As a former Marine, Chaplain Melendez understands the perspective of the soldier. He grew up in Honduras and moved to Maryland when he was 15. He joined the Marines after the 9/11 tragedies. “My brother had joined the year before me, and I wanted to do my part to protect our country.” He gave four years on active duty, two years as an active reserve and four years as inactive. Melendez went on to complete four years of theology training and three years of seminary school. He has the additional skill of one year of clinical pastoral education. Since moving to San Marcos in 2017, he has connected with the San Marcos Police Department to provide services as a police department chaplain. He is also a Hays Commissioners Court chaplain.

Mark Harebottle was a willing substitute, but he called in that he was sick.

Risking Life and Limb to Bring Christianity to North Korea. Beijing (AsiaNews/AP) – Scores of missionaries risk their lives every day on the border between China and North Korea to spread the Gospel and help North Koreans. Most of them are South Koreans, but some are ethnic Korean who have lived in China for generations. Their lives are constantly at risk. In recent years, ten missionaries have died under mysterious circumstances, this according to Kim Kyou Ho (pictured), head of the Chosen People Network, a Christian group based in Seoul. North Korea is suspected in some of the cases. In hundreds more, missionaries have been imprisoned in or expelled from China, which bans proselytizing by foreigners. One of the missionaries, a Korean-Chinese woman who asked that her name not be used, to protect her family, said that she is monitored by both the Chinese and North Korean authorities, yet is willing to pursue her work. “I always pray, and I’m with God, so I’m not worried,” she said…. Ohio Pastor No Longer Allowed to Offer Lunchtime Bible Study at School Following Complaint. Wintersville, Ohio. An Ohio pastor will no longer be allowed to offer a voluntary lunchtime Bible study for students at a local middle school after one of the nation’s most conspicuous professing atheist organizations submitted a letter of complaint to the school district. An attorney for the Indian Creek School District has submitted a letter to the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) advising that the school district will meet with the pastor to explain their “legal obligations,” which they believe prohibits him from sharing the gospel with students. “At this meeting, the district will ensure that Mr. Bauman does not regularly lead or attend student group activities in the district’s schools,” attorney Donna Andrew of Pepple & Waggoner, Ltd. wrote. “Additionally, the district will ensure that Mr. Bauman will not proselytize students during the school day.” FFRF submitted correspondence last month to Indian Creek Superintendent T.C. Chappelear after a Facebook post from Bobbyjon Bauman of the Valley Youth Network was brought to their attention. “We had 165 kids at the FCA Bible studies during lunch at Indian Creek Middle School today! I shared the gospel with them using Romans 6:23 as the touchstone verse. None of the kids in any of the four Bible study groups even knew what the word ‘gospel’ meant, so I was able to share with them the significance of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ,” Bauman wrote. “The kids were very responsive to the message, and we had 30 of them request Bibles because they didn’t own one. So next week, we will be bringing them Bibles,” he outlined, explaining student interest.
