Chip Johnson, an instructor with HURST Jaws of Life who helped conduct the training, opened the outdoor demonstration portion of the event with a moment of silence in rememberance of the First Responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Thirty-two First Responders from Pulaski County’s emergency service agencies participated in the event, which featured dinner, classroom instruction and outdoor hands-on training using Hurst equipment on several wrecked autos. State Farm, represented at the event by local agents Deanie Hall and Webb Donald, donated some 100 vehicles for use in the F.R.E.E. programs across the country. F.R.E.E. helps keep First Responders up to date on proper and safe extrication techniques, which are more important than ever given the rapid onslaught of advancements in vehicle design such as high-strength steels, advanced restraint systems, and multiple air bags. The growing popularity of high-voltage hybrid vehicles also makes this class a necessity. The event also provided Tucks - a member of the National Auto Body Council (NABC) - an opportunity to remind everyone to “Slow Down and Move Over,” when coming upon an accident, and the importance of not “rubbernecking” and causing another accident.

It's just the same as corporate America, and it actually should be. When the sport no longer has enough sponsors, the promoters and track owners aren't making money, you know what comes next. "Vaccination is the best way to prevent influenza and its poten- tially severe complications. This unique 'drive-thru' approach is proven to be a fast and efficient way to vaccinate a large number of folks in a short time," said Noelle Bissell, M.D., director, New River Health District. "Herd immunity develops when more people get vaccinated," Dr. Bissell explained. "There is less virus present to potentially infect those who cannot be immunized such as infants under 6 months old; this helps protect everyone from this potentially deadly dis- ease." All persons aged 6 months or older should be vaccinated against influenza each year. Particular effort should be made to vaccinate people at higher risk for influenza complications. The Radford Humane Society hosted the River City Music Fest this past weekend at Bisset Park. The event is the Humane Society's annual fundraiser. Many may remember it as the Pickin' for Pooches and Fiddlin' for Felines that was held every summer. This year the Humane Society made a few changes to the event starting with a name change and location change. There was a great turnout for the event this year. There were many vendors, food trucks and artists performing throughout the day. For more information about the Radford Humane Society follow them on their webpage at https://www.radfordhumanesociety.com Pictured clockwise form top left: Johnny Cake and the Lunch Truck, members of Mud Daubers and the Queen Bees, the kids play zone and James "Chappy" Chaplow from Snowsville enjoys the music.
