On a modern scale, the adult industry can be said to begin in the form of novels from around the 1740s, and erotic films began at the rise of motion pictures. Without any doubt, the adult entertainment industry has constantly driven the mainstream adoption of new technologies. For instance, the printing press was propelled to glory with the publication of the popular I Modi (The Ways). I Modi, consisting of graphic sexual illustrations and explicit sonnets, was one of the most broadly distributed books of the Italian Renaissance. It made a number of Italians to learn how to read as they were curious to learn the content of the book. A great deal of the internet’s early value was strengthened through helping people find pornography. Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, funded the collaborative encyclopedia’s early development with the revenue he got from his adult site, Bomis. From the printing press to the Super 8 Film, and from pay-per-view to VCRs, adult entertainment has been accelerating technology. The adult industry has expanded with each technological advancement, from print, television, cable, VHS, to DVDs. The internet has taken it to another level, enabling images and videos to become available on a much bigger scale than it was previously possible. Live streaming birthed adult live webcams. The huge demand for porn on the internet has resulted in the production of streaming video, credit-card verification sites, web referral rings and video technologies. It is said that porn websites take up to 37% of total web space. Aside from all the free content available online, porn is a multi-billion-dollar industry. There are several production companies creating and selling movies, websites offering high quality paid adult content, paid live cam shows, online sex shops, dating websites, apps and so on. It is a huge market. Today, the dominant forms of online adult entertainment businesses include paid membership sites, free tube sites, as well as live camsites. Typically, paid sites are operated by a studio and often charge a monthly subscription fee for anyone to access their full content library. Free tube sites provide unlimited access to a several full-length videos, clips, photos and mashups. They earn their revenue from video and display advertising, mainly supporting dating apps, adult toys as well as other porn sites. 3 The most common free tube site is Pornhub, which according to statistics by Alexa is the 20th most visited site in the US. Camsites fall into one of two sections: public tipping sites or pay-per-second private/group sites. Most camsites sell site-specific “tokens” to their viewers; these tokens can be used to tip models or pay for private shows. The most common camsite is LiveJasmin, which provides private shows and is ranked 27th on the statistics by Alexa. There are others like Chaturbate and Bonga Cams, offering public tipping shows and are respectively ranked 109th and 149th on the statistics by Alexa. It is no surprise that the adult industry makes a large revenue, which can compete with some of the biggest companies in the world. Based on a TopTenREVIEWS report, the industry was valued to be at a whopping 97 billion dollars annually. 4 Among websites, porn competes with the big brands. Based on SimilarWeb statistics, xvideos.com is ranked 5th top website in the world. In 8th place, there is xnxx.com which is above Yahoo, Wikipedia and Twitter. In the last decade, a few notable adult industry trends have been noticed. First, viewers are moving from paid membership sites to free tube sites and live cam sites. It seems that viewers prefer the range of free options they can find on tube sites and the engagement they can experience by joining live cam shows relative to purchasing memberships to individual sites. Second, social media distribution channels are becoming increasingly important. Studios, porn stars, and cam models are marketing their new videos and upcoming cam sessions to their followers on social networks like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. A few tube sites have begun to build their own social networks so that users can follow their favorite performers, track their favorite videos, and get personalized recommendations. New marketplaces have emerged to allow performers to upload their content and sell access to their fans directly. ManyVids, for example, allows models to charge for access to their videos, and some performers use the platform to offer paid Skype and texting sessions. A third trend is the new status quo of rampant piracy perpetrated by free tube sites. Generally, tube sites are not content creators, so all of their content can be reasonably expected to be pirated. Only in few cases will tube sites partner with content creators to obtain distribution rights and offer them a share of the advertising revenue. Content creators have little power to defend themselves because the US is complacent about enforcing DMCA (The Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown notices for adult content. A further complication is that most common tube sites are owned by MindGeek, the same porn conglomerate that owns most of the studios producing porn. Performers are afraid of speaking out against tube site piracy for the fear of being blacklisted from the studios. 5 The failure of the modern adult industry ‘According to various reports, currently, the digital adult industry’s net worth is about $97 billion. This money is enough to feed at-least 4.8 billion people a day. Every year, Hollywood releases roughly 600 movies and makes $10 billion in profit. And how much does the digital adult industry make? 13,000 videos and close to $15 billion in profit. The digital adult industry makes more money than Major League Baseball, The NFL and The NBA combined.’ Content viewers all around the world are good for 10 billion dollars in ad revenue every year. Tube networks and professional content owners are the only ones benefitting from these funds and content viewers aren’t even aware that they are generating these funds. In this modern world of the 21st century this shouldn’t be acceptable. Wouldn’t it be fair to reward everyone for contributing to the network? As of 2020, about 2000 adult tube sites, 450 webcam platforms, and 272 sex shops worldwide accept cryptocurrencies as a form of payment. That may seem like a lot, but relative to the overall size of the sprawling adult industry, it really isn’t. In fact, for an industry that prides itself on a history of early tech adoption and popularization from VHS tapes to internet payment systems, porn has approached this new form of remuneration gingerly at best. Big and well-known companies especially, like Pornhub, flirted with accepting crypto for years before making any big steps. And most sites long focused on accepting Bitcoin, arguably the best known and most dominant coin at the moment, rather than exploring new or numerous alternative cryptocurrencies. Early attempts to develop coins meant to serve the adult industry specifically flopped miserably. Now join the pioneers of porn, Jackr, from the Netherlands. Famous for their Red-Light District, acceptance of gay marriage and regulated drug policies. At Jackr we believe everyone should take a piece of the pie, even regular joe. We are making this possible by introducing an all new mining concept that rewards every content viewer/uploader and chatter with Jack Tokens. Content viewers will be able to acquire Jack Tokens through watching content on platforms that support “Adult Mining”. Jackr is allowing room for anyone willing to make money in their underwear without the disadvantage of competing with porn stars or tubing networks. 6 Other Industry Issues The adult industry has always faced a range of challenges. The introduction of digital technology has removed many barriers to its expansion but it has also introduced some.
