Galatasaray AŞ go in search of a long overdue UEFA Champions League away win when they visit CFR 1907 Cluj on matchday four. • The Turkish title holders have not won on their travels in the competition proper since September 2002, when they prevailed 2-0 at PFC Lokomotiv Moskva. Including their narrow 1-0 reverse at Manchester United FC in September, they have lost eight and drawn one of nine away games since then. • The teams' 1-1 draw in Istanbul on 23 October pre-empted the departure of CFR coach , who left the club by mutual consent 24 hours later. Paulo Sérgio has since taken over. Match background • CFR lost 2-1 to Manchester United in their first Group H fixture at the Stadionul Dr. Constantin Rădulescu but can take heart from 1-0 wins against FC Slovan Liberec and FC Basel 1893 in the qualifying rounds. • This is CFR's first home encounter with Turkish opposition but Galatasaray have a long history against teams from – and a disappointing record from previous visits to the country. • Their continental debut came against FC Dinamo Bucureşti in the 1956/57 European Champion Clubs' Cup preliminary round, and ended in a 4-3 aggregate defeat after they lost the first leg 3-1 in Bucharest. • Galatasaray went down 5-1 on aggregate to FC Steaua Bucureşti in the 1988/89 European Cup semi-finals. That Steaua side included , who went on to serve Galatasaray as player and coach. • Galatasaray finally won in Romania at the sixth attempt on their most recent visit – 3-0 at Dinamo in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League group stage courtesy of goals from Harry Kewell, Shabani Nonda and Mehmet Topal. Gökhan Zan, and Sabri Sarıoğlu all played. • The visitors' overall record in Romania is W1 D1 L4. Team ties • Galatasaray coach captained Turkey in a 1-1 friendly draw with Romania at the Ali Sami Yen on 29 January 1983 and also played on 9 March that year, in Targu Mures, with Romania winning 3-1. Terim took on Romania four times as a player, recording two draws and two defeats. • Terim also failed to record a victory against Romania as Turkey coach. In August 2007 his side – including Hamit Altıntop, Gökhan and Sabri – lost 2-0 in Bucharest. In February 1995, during a previous spell in charge, Turkey were held 1-1 by Romania in Izmir. • Semih Kaya, Umut Bulut, Altıntop and substitute Emre Çolak were in the Turkey side beaten 1-0 at home by Romania in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier on 12 October. • Altıntop was in the FC Bayern München team that earned home and away victories over CFR in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage. • Fernando Muslera played in Uruguay's 1-1 draw with Romania in Bucharest in February this year. • Nordin Amrabat struck PSV Eindhoven's second goal in a 2-0 win at CFR in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League group stage. • In that same group stage campaign, Pantelis Kapetanos scored in Steaua's 3-1 loss at Fenerbahçe SK. Kapetanos and Ionuţ Rada were in the Steaua team beaten home and away by Fenerbahçe and consigned to last place in their section. • Kapetanos and Steaua lost home and away to Cris's Olympique Lyonnais in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage. • That same season Kapetanos had been an unused second-leg substitute when Steaua defeated a Galatasaray side including Hasan Şaş, now one of Terim's assistant coaches, and Hakan in the third qualifying round. • Gökhan conceded a decisive late penalty and was sent off playing for Beşiktaş JK in a 2-1 loss at FC Dinamo Bucureşti in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup group stage. • Eleven Romanian players have represented Galatasaray and two, Hagi and Gheorghe Popescu, were in the team that Terim led to the 2000 UEFA Cup, Turkey's first European club trophy. Hagi was sent off four minutes into extra time in the final against Arsenal FC, which his side won 4-1 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

CFR UEFA Champions League statistics • This is coach Paulo Sérgio's first game in the UEFA Champions League. • The Romanian champions have scored 49 goals in UEFA competition. • CFR have managed 12 shots on target, the lowest total in the group stage along with Arsenal FC and RSC Anderlecht. • CFR's 2-0 victory against SC Braga on matchday one was only the third time a Romanian side had won away from home in the UEFA Champions League group stage, following FC Steaua Bucureşti (4-1 at FC Dynamo Kyiv in 2006) and CFR (2-1 at AS Roma in 2008). • Matías Aguirregaray serves a one-game ban following his red card on matchday three; Rafael Bastos' next booking will incur a suspension. Miscellaneous • Ioan Andone parted company with the club after matchday three and Paulo Sérgio was unveiled as his successor on 30 October in a deal that runs until the end of the season. • He took charge of his first game on Saturday having watched from the stands on 31 October as CFR won 2-0 at home against second-tier FC Botoşani to advance to the Romanian Cup quarter-finals. • That gave assistant Francisc Dican two victories out of two as interim boss, having also overseen a 3-1 league triumph at struggling CS Turnu Severin on 27 October. • CFR claimed their biggest win of the season on Saturday, beating FC Braşov 5-0 in Paulo Sérgio's first game in charge. Rafael Bastos was replaced in the first half with a muscle injury while Modou Sougou missed out altogether with a similar problem. • There are eight Lusophones in CFR's UEFA Champions League squad: six Portuguese and two Brazilians. • CFR suffered three successive defeats in all competitions in October, their worst sequence since losing four in a row between November 2004 and April 2005. • Already on loan from US Città di Palermo, Aguirregaray completed a permanent transfer to CFR last month, signing a four-year contract. • Ciprian Deac (knee ligaments), Adam Vass (broken foot), Bakary Sare (broken leg) and Ronny (ligaments) have been left out of CFR's UEFA Champions League squad after picking up major injuries in the opening month of the season. Vass and Deac are back in training. Galatasaray UEFA Champions League statistics • Burak Yılmaz has this season become the first Turkish player to represent four different clubs in the UEFA Champions League. He had previously featured for Beşiktaş JK, Fenerbahçe SK and Trabzonspor AŞ. • Galatasaray have had 34 shots off target, more than any other side. • Felipe Melo is banned after collecting yellow cards in each of the first three games. He is one of four players to have been booked three times so far. Miscellaneous • Johan Elmander will sit out matchday four after he was sidelined for at least six weeks with a right thigh tear suffered at CFR. • Sabri Sarıoğlu made his first competitive outing of the season on matchday three. • Ceyhun Gülselam made his first appearance of the campaign and Yekta Kurtuluş his first start as Galatasaray beat Kayserispor 3-0 on 27 October, ending a run of five games without a win. Cris got his maiden goal for the club. • That sequence of five matches without a victory was Galatasaray's worst since March/April 2011. • Emre Çolak made his senior Turkey debut in the 1-0 FIFA World Cup qualifying defeat by Romania on 12 October. • Tomáš Ujfaluši is not in the UEFA Champions League squad after suffering knee ligament damage in training in September.

CFR 1907 Cluj: Paulo Sérgio Date of birth: 19 February 1968 Nationality: Portuguese Playing career: Sporting Club de Portugal, CD Olivais e Moscavide, UD Vilafranquense, CF Os Belenenses, FC Paços de Ferreira, SC Salgueiros, Vitória FC, CD Feirense, CD Santa Clara, Grenoble Foot 38, GD Estoril Praia, SC Olhanense Coaching career: SC Olhanense, CD Santa Clara (twice), SC Beira-Mar, FC Paços de Ferreira, Vitória SC, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Heart of Midlothian FC, CFR 1907 Cluj • A product of the SC Sanjoanense youth system, Paulo Sérgio passed through Sporting's ranks, going on to play up front for a number of smaller clubs as well as Liga sides Os Belenenses, Paços de Ferreira and Vitória Setúbal. • Hung up his boots at Olhanense in 2003, moving straight to the bench and leading the club to promotion to the second division in his first season in charge. • Left in 2006, and twice coached Azores-based Santa Clara either side of a spell as coach of Beira-Mar; stepped up to Liga with Paços de Ferreira in 2008/09, unexpectedly leading the team to the Portuguese Cup final, which they lost 1-0 to FC Porto. • Moved to Guimarães in October 2009, leading the club to sixth place in his only season. Replaced Carlos Carvalhal as Sporting coach in summer 2010 but his side struggled for consistency in the league and he left in February 2011 following elimination from the UEFA Europa League round of 32. • Took over at Hearts that June and, in what proved his only season in charge, guided the Edinburgh club to the Scottish Cup. Succeeded Ioan Andone at CFR in October 2012.

Galatasaray AŞ: Fatih Terim Date of birth: 4 September 1953 Nationality: Turkish Playing career: Adana Demirspor, Galatasaray AŞ Coaching career: MKE Ankaragücü, Göztepe AŞ, Turkey Under-21, Turkey (twice), Galatasaray AŞ (three times), ACF Fiorentina, AC Milan • A central defender, Terim played for Galatasaray for over a decade and represented Turkey 51 times, 31 of them as captain. He started his coaching career with MKE Ankaragücü and then Göztepe, before he was named assistant to national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the Under-21s in 1991. • Appointed Turkey coach in 1993 and led them to EURO '96. They lost all of their games in England, but just getting to the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark. • After EURO '96 he returned to Galatasaray, winning four league titles and the 2000 UEFA Cup. came calling and Terim took charge of Fiorentina and Milan before returning to Galatasaray, but problems behind the scenes brought about a temporary retirement in 2004. • Reappointed by Turkey in 2005 following a break from management, Terim – known as 'Imparator' (The Emperor) for his leadership skills – could not guide the team through a 2006 FIFA World Cup play-off against Switzerland. Success followed at UEFA EURO 2008, however, with Terim leading Ay Yıldızlılar (The Crescent-Stars) to the semi-finals, but he resigned following his side's unsuccessful bid to reach the 2010 FIFA World Cup. • Returned for a third spell in charge of Galatasaray in May 2011 and in his first season back steered Cimbom to their first Süper Lig crown in four years.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only two teams have failed to score in a group stage: RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2004/05 and Maccabi Haifa FC in 2009/10. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest goals against total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
