A. Prepare your computer before you install ArcGIS for Desktop

1. Check ArcGIS’s system requirements to make sure your computer has the required hardware and software.

If necessary, uninstall previous versions of ArcGIS Desktop or Server. The software cannot be installed on a computer that has a previous version of ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Server installed.

1. Install the Microsoft .NET Framework (version 3.5 Service Pack 1 or higher), if it is not currently enabled in your computer.

2. Update your windows system completely before installing ArcGIS.

3. You need windows operation system to install ArcGIS software. If you are using PC and you have or 8, you can install ArcGIS 10, 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3. If you are using window 8 you may be better to use 10.1 or 10.2 or 10.3. ArcGIS 10.2.2 will be used for demonstration in LA499, and therefore you are recommended to install 10.2.2 to your computer if it can accommodate the installation. If you are using Mac computers, you need to install and run BootCamp on your Mac, then install window 7 or higher version of windows on your computer before you can install ArcGIS software.

B. Activate your authorization code

1. Visit http://www.esri.com/StudentEdition to begin the process of activating and downloading your ArcGIS for Desktop Student Trial software.

2. Log in using your Existing Global Account, or Sign-up for a new Esri Global account, if you don’t currently have one.

3. Enter the authorization code and click Activate ArcGIS. You can find the authorization inside the software package.

4. You will see the “select a version” after you activate the code. Choose the version that you want to install. It is recommended that you download 10.2.2 for LA 499. You don’t need to download the software if the hardcopy that you have is the right version (e.g., ArcGIS 10.2.2) that you want to install.

5. Click the right version of ArcGIS for Desktop to download or find the installation file from the DVD inside the package you received from your instructor.

C. Download and install ArcGIS for Desktop Student Trial (Optional)

1. If you have an old version installed in your computer, download the ArcGIS Uninstall Utility and uninstall previous versions of ArcGIS Desktop or Server. The software cannot be installed on a computer that has a previous version of ArcGIS for Desktop or ArcGIS for Server installed. It's OK if the computer has ArcGIS Explorer installed.

2. If you don’t currently have the Microsoft .NET Framework (version 3.5 Service Pack 1 or higher) installed, install it as shown below.

Enabling .NET Framework 3.5.1 in Window 7 and both .NET Framework 3.5.1 and.Net Framework 4.5 in Windows 8 and window 10 1) Go to Start->Control Panel-> Programs

2) Select “Turn Windows Features on or off.” 4

3) Expand the “Microsoft.Net Framework 3.5.1 Option”.

4) Click both of the folders in this option and click Ok to close out of the options. Do the same for other versions of .NET Framework if you are using windows 8 or windows 10. 5) Reboot your machine before continuing with your installation

If you are using other versions of windows, e.g. and , please also checks whether you have appropriate versions of .Net Framework installed in your computer. If not, do a Windows update and install the latest version of .Net Framework for your windows.

3. Determine the location for the ArcGIS for Desktop software you wish to install and click the Download button. You can also download the Tutorial Data, if desired.

4. Double-click ArcGIS_Desktop_102_135736.exe (or alike file name) to extract the installation files to your hard drive.

5. Locate and run Setup.exe to install ArcGIS for Desktop. If you already have the installation files in a DVD, then you can skip all the download process. For installation, “Complete” installation is recommended.

You may be asked “Do you want to allow the following progam to make changes to this computer?”. Click Yes to allow the change.

Specify a Destination Folder in your computer hard drive to install ArcGIS Desktop.

Click Next to Start your installation.

6. After the files are installed, the Authorization Wizard will open and prompt you to choose a product to authorize; select “ArcGIS Desktop Advanced (Single Use)” and click continue.

Following the installation process, you need to activate licenses for your ArcGIS desktop and all its extensions. Don’t skip the extensions, as you will be using some of them through the quarter. Typically you can register your ArcGIS product directly after you finish installation. If you don’t see a registration screen shown up as the following one, you can go to Start- >ArcGIS->ArcGIS Administration to conduct your registration. Once you are on the ArcGIS Administrator Wizard, choose “ArcGIS Desktop Advanced (Single Use)” or “ArcInfo (Single Use)” or “Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use” depending on what version you are installing. Then click the Authorize Now button under step 2 on the window. Launch the Authorization Wizard for Single Use Products.

Click Ok to move to the next step.

If for any reason you missed the “Administrator Wizard” window, you can bring it back by going to All Programs->ArcGIS->ArcGIS Administrator

Click “Desktop” folder, you then can see a list of licenses. Choose “ArcGIS Desktop Advanced (Single Use)” or “ArcInfo (Single Use)” or “Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use” depending on which version that you are using. Then Click “Authorize Now”.

7. The Authorization Wizard will prompt you for an authorization code; enter your activated code. Follow the prompts and the software will authorize and be ready for use. Note: leave the default option for the software extensions selected; they will be authorized automatically.

Under Authorization Options, choose “I have installed my software and need to authorize it.”

Click Next to move to next stage.

Under Authorization Method, choose “Authorize with ESRI now using Internet.”

Click Next to move to next stage.

Fill in Authorization Information. You should fill in your own information instead of copying the information on the following image.

Click Next to move to next stage.

Continue to fill in Authorization Information. Make sure that you choose Education – Student, instead of Staff/Faculty.

Click Next to continue.

Enter the Software Authorization Number, which you can find inside of the DVD folder or provided by your instructor.

Click Next to continue the registration. On the next page, check the second option to try all of the extensions. You need to type in the same registration code for the all the extensions. Click next again to start the authorization process. Make sure that you have Internet connection at this time.

Once you go through the authorization process, go to Start->ArcGIS->ArcGIS Administrator, to check the Availability folder under Desktop. Make sure that you have ArcInfo and its major extensions, e.g., Network Analyst, 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst etc. authorized.

1. Start ArcMap to make sure the program is running ok. 2. Install the latest service pack from ESRI. http://support.esri.com/en/downloads/patches-servicepacks/list/productid/160 Go to the above URL, you will find a list of the Patches and Services Packs for ArcGIS desktops. For instance, ArcGIS 10 now have the latest service pack as version 5. Download the English version through URL : http://support.esri.com/en/downloads/patches- servicepacks/view/productid/160/metaid/1876

Scroll to the middle of the webpage, you will find ArcGISDESKtop10sp5.msp. Download it to your computer and install it through double clicking the file.

Following the installation guide on the installation windows and if necessary choose installation settings as specified in the original installation of the DVD (see previous steps). Once you finished installation of the service pack. You can now use your ArcGIS 10.

Scroll to the middle of the webpage, find the download link for ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 for Desktop. Download it and install it to your computer. Once the installation is done, you can use the ArcGIS software!

If you have installed 10.2.2, there is no service pack available for 10.2.2. But you can find a list of patches for it. You may not need to download all of them for now.
