Uaunton BARNICOTT &- PEARCE, ATHEN^UM PRESS 1907 BARNICOTT AND PEARCE PRINTERS Preface. T is usual to write something as a preface, and this generally appears to be to make some excuse for having written at all. In a pre- face to Tom Toole and his Friends — a very interesting book published a few years ago, by Mrs. Henry Sandford, in which the poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, together with the Wedgwoods and many other eminent men of that day figure,—the author says, on one occasion, when surrounded by old letters, note books, etc., an old and faithful servant remon- " " strated with her thus : And what for ? she " demanded very emphatically. There's many a hundred dozen books already as nobody ever reads." Her hook certainly justified her efforts, and needed no excuse. But what shall I say of this } What for do 1 launch this little book, which only refers to the parish ot Mylor ^ vi Preface. The great majority of us are convinced that the county of our birth is the best part of Eng- land, and if we are folk country-born, that our parish is the most favoured spot in it. With something of this idea prompting me, I have en- deavoured to look up all available information and documents, and elaborate such by personal recollections and by reference to authorities.

KNOWING OUR BOUNDARIES Rosy Hanns has immersed herself in a massive endeavour to plot and record the numerous boundary stones in Cornwall. No doubt many of us have stumbled across (or even over) these mysterious objects while out and about and have wondered what the letters carved on them once signified. Though not the most impressive of features, they may indicate estate ownership or parish or other boundaries, and therefore help to tell the story of local land-use, social structures and power at the time of their placement. Rosy has sent in photographs of stones she has discovered around Treslea Downs in Cardinham and Warleggan parishes. The map below shows various stones plotted in 1881; now Rosy is recording these in order to inform Cornwall Council’s Historic Environment record (which can be found at https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/community-and-living/mapping/). 2 Treslea Downs from the 1881 Ordnance Survey Six- inch to the mile map XXVII.SW. Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland https://maps.nls.uk/copyright.html Spotting these stones on old maps is one thing; actually finding them on the ground is something else, as Rosy has found.

  • The Distribution of Ammonium in Granites from South-West England
Journal of the Geological Society, London, Vol. 145, 1988, pp. 37-41, 1 fig., 5 tables. Printed in Northern Ireland The distribution of ammonium in granites from South-West England A. HALL Department of Geology, Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, Egham, Surrey TW20 OEX, UK Abstract: The ammonium contents of granites, pegmatites and hydrothermally altered rocks from SW England have been measured. Ammonium levels in the granites are generally high compared with those from other regions, averaging 36ppm,and they differ markedlybetween intrusions. The pegmatites show higherammonium contents than any other igneous rocks which have yet been investigated. Ammonium contents are strongly enriched in the hydrothermally altered rocks, includ- ing greisens and kaolinized granites. There is agood correlation between the average ammonium content of the intrusions in SW England and their initial "Sr/*'Sr ratios and peraluminosity. This relationship supports the hypothesis that the ammonium in the granites is derived from a sedimentary source, either in the magmatic source region or via contamination of the magma. Introduction Results Ammonium is present as a trace constituent of granitic The granites rocks, in which it occurs in feldspars and micas substituting isomorphously for potassium (Honma & Itihara 1981). The The new analyses of Cornubian granites are given in Table amount of ammonium in granites varies from zero to over 1. Wheal Jane Minewater Project Pilot Passive Treatment Plant – Decommissioning Project Name: Kevin Barnes Job title: Project Manager Date: May 2010 Wheal Jane Minewater Project Pilot Passive Treatment Plant Background – Decommissioning Project Mining has taken place in the Carnon Valley area of Cornwall for thousands of years. The Wheal Jane Mine was opened in Oct 1971. In the 1980’s 900 tonnes of ore containing tin, zinc & copper was mined and processed at the Wheal Jane mine site on a daily basis. In 1985 tin prices fell from £10,500 to £3,300. In 1991 mining was officially terminated at the Wheal Jane site and a temporary water treatment system was installed. On 13th January 1992 50,000m3 of mine water left the Nangiles Adit…. Wheal Jane Minewater Project Pilot Passive Treatment Plant – Decommissioning Project Wheal Jane Mine water Treatment Project – The project was initiated following the abandonment of the Wheal Jane Mine and the subsequent 1992 pollution event, to treat the metalliferous acid mine water which was continuing to discharge from the mine workings. A long term treatment strategy with two main options was assessed; 1. An Active Treatment Plant based upon lime dosing and settlement/storage within the Clemow’s Valley Tailings Dam. 2. A Pilot Passive Treatment Plant located in the Carnon Valley. Wheal Jane Minewater Project Pilot Passive Treatment Plant – Decommissioning Project Carnon Valley - 1993 Wheal Jane Minewater Project Pilot Passive Treatment Plant – Decommissioning Project Land Ownership The National Rivers Authority acquired 44 hectares of land in the Carnon Valley between July 1993 & November 1994. The land was purchased for the construction of the Pilot Passive Treatment Plant.

  • Gwennap War Memorial
GWENNAP WAR MEMORIAL Compiled by Barbara Wilkinson The War Memorial at Gwennap was unveiled on Saturday 17 July 1920 to commemorate the dead of the First World War, and the ceremony was reported in the West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser on Thursday 22 July 1920. Other local newspapers also carried the story. GWENAPP’S CROSS UNVEILED BY THE LORD LIEUTENANT The Lord‐Lieutenant of Cornwall (Mr. J.C. Williams), on Saturday, unveiled the memorial erected by the parishioners of Gwennap in memory of 16 men from the parish who made the supreme sacrifice in the war. The memorial consists of a beautiful cross of Cornish granite, standing eleven feet high, which has been placed on a piece of elevated ground near the boundary wall of the parish churchyard. The inscription reads:‐ “To the honour of those who at the call of King and Country gave up all that was dear to them that others might live in freedom, 1914‐1918” Underneath are the following names: Harry Powys Rogers, James Phillips, Thomas Collins, James Gleed, Arthur Prowse, William Trenery, William Hitchins, Richard Ford, Thomas Carbis, William Tregoning, William Collins, John Hooker, Gilbert Pelmear, James Annear, Philip Russell, George Pelmear. The arrangements for the memorial, costing about £70, were made by a committee, consisting of the vicar, Rev. J.L. Parker (chairman) Messrs. Towan Hancock, G.E. Prowse and R.T. Harris. The clergy and ministers taking part in Saturday’s unveiling ceremony were the Revs. J.L. Parker (vicar), W.H.C. Nalton (vicar of Lannarth), H. BRITISH MINING No.3 BRITISH MINING No.3 MEMOIRS 1976 Hunter, J. 1976 “Visit to Wheal Jane Tin Mine” British Mining No.3, pp.8-10 NB This publication was originally issued in the 10 by 8 inch format then used by the society. It has now been digitised and reformatted at A5. This has changed the original pagination of articles, which is given in square brackets. ISSN 0309-2199 VISIT TO WHEAL JANE TIN MINE J. Hunter B.Sc. During our Easter field excursion to Dartmoor the other year, we were privileged to be given permission to visit the newly opened Wheal Jane tin mine, near Redruth, Cornwall. We had to set off from our lodgings in Ashburton at 6.00am to be underground by 8.30am. Lamps, belts, helmets and safety boots were all provided, and at the shaft top our party was divided into two groups. One group was left at the 2nd level, and shown around the dry workings, while the rest of us, because we had gone in supposedly waterproof clothing, were taken down to the 7th level, known as the ‘wet level’. Three main lodes are mined at Wheal Jane, two of which are associated with a porphyritic ‘elvan’ dyke and dip at a shallow angle to the S.E. down to the 70 fm. level. The elvan dyke was previously thought to have controlled the deposition of the lodes, but careful study has revealed that the tin ore was deposited in several phases, some of which preceed the dyke, and the presence of the two features in such close proximity is probably due to an earlier shear zone being a favourable site for both.
