Se lo analizzassimo con gli strumenti della migrazione, è un italoamericano, o forse un “abruzzoamericano”, di terza generazione. D’altronde, quando nasce a Denver (Colorado) nel 909, nasce americano, da padre italiano, che diverrà il famoso muratore dei suoi racconti. Nick Fante arriva nel 90 a Ellis Island, l’isola della speranza e della quarantena, sulle orme di suo padre Giovanni – nonno di John, da cui eredita il nome americanizzato –, partito quindici anni prima. Inoltre, volendo utilizzare un’altra categoria dell’analisi migratoria, in questo caso interpretativa, John Fante nasce come nasce e dove nasce perché figlio di una catena migratoria. Una modalità che ha caratterizzato la plurisecolare storia dell’emigrazione italiana nel mondo, nelle sue diverse fasi. Giovanni Fante partì dall’Abruzzo (Torricella Peligna) nel 1886, nella prima fase – non disciplinata – del variegato mosaico della migrazione ita- liana. Il paese si era unito formalmente da poco più di due decenni e, ciò nonostante, l’Italia dell’epoca somigliava a un insieme di diverse entità e realtà. Un ex suddito del Regno borbonico, come tanti insieme e dopo di lui, salpava con i bastimenti verso il nuovo mondo a ritmi prima inimmagina- bili. D’altronde, la migrazione da e verso la penisola italiana è storia antica, molto più antica di quanto si pensi; solo che dopo l’Unità – a dire il vero dopo il 1876, anno della prima rilevazione statistica ufficiale del neonato Re- gno d’Italia – la stessa migrazione assunse le dimensioni dell’esodo di massa. Milioni di italiane e italiani si spostarono vero le Americhe e verso l’Europa, ma la narrazione che assunse l’epopea statunitense fu senza precedenti. La migrazione è distacco, è partenza, ma al tempo stesso incontro e conoscen- za, sempre. Solo che nel caso americano – o meglio, statunitense – l’esodo fu accompagnato da una narrazione di speranza. Non solo un nuovo mondo, il nuovo mondo, bensì la narrazione di una meta dove tutto era possibile. Le storie della famiglia Fante si intrecciano, di conseguenza, con le ce- sure della storia della migrazione. Infatti, proprio nello stesso anno in cui 9 giovanna di lello / toni ricciardi arrivò Giovanni, fu inaugurata la Statua della Libertà. «Tenetevi, o antiche terre, la vostra vana pompa. Datemi i vostri stanchi, i vostri poveri, le vostre masse infreddolite desiderose di respirare liberi, i rifiuti miserabili delle vo- stre coste affollate. Mandatemi loro, i senzatetto, gli scossi dalle tempeste e io solleverò la mia fiaccola accanto alla porta dorata». In questa scritta venivano riassunti principi, ideali, meno reali, ma poco importa, di una fase nuova dell’umanità. I simboli sono importanti: sono le raffigurazioni, le espressioni e le percezioni che orientano le persone, che danno un senso, laico o religioso che sia, alla loro esistenza. Anche nel caso di Nick, la sua storia e il suo percorso migratorio coin- cidono con la storia della migrazione, una storia interamente italiana. Il suo arrivo a New York avviene in un contesto legislativo e procedurale del tutto nuovo. Infatti, proprio in quell’anno, il 90, l’allora Regno d’Italia inau- gurò l’ingresso nel nuovo secolo dotandosi di un Commissariato generale all’emigrazione e della prima legge organica che la disciplinasse.

Meylor April 2016 While scholars of John Fante’s Ask the Dust have given considerable attention to the novel’s protagonist Arturo Bandini, his Mexican American love-interest Camilla Lopez has not been adequately analyzed. Scholarship concerning Camilla has been limited to her destructive relationship with Arturo, as well as her adoption of Hollywood stereotypes. By foregrounding the figure of Camilla through the socio-historical lens of the marginalization and deportation of Mexicans and Mexican Americans during the 1930s, we can discover important insights into Fante’s novel, most notably in his treatment of marginalized ethnic identities within Los Angeles. Through the novel’s complementary motifs of absence and presence regarding Camilla, Fante draws attention to the Mexican past of Los Angeles, a historical moment that is often erased, both implicitly and explicitly, by the collective memory of the city.

Through an analysis of the narrative technique in the novels and an application of characterization theory, the goal is to describe Arturo Bandini as accurately as possible. The thesis argues that the character is multifaceted and interesting and that extensive comparisons with his creator are not required in order to understand Arturo. The theoretical approach in this thesis is two-fold, inferring character based on characterization theory on the one hand and narrative technique on the other. Through an analysis of the narrator’s role in the narrative, much of the characteristic features of Arturo are revealed to the reader. In addition to this, an analysis of the character through direct definition and indirect presentation portrays the protagonist’s traits in the story. This characterological study, then, will put emphasis on the narrative point of view and the establishing of character in the story, both of which will combine to create a coherent and accurate description of Arturo. Through the analysis, this thesis demonstrates Arturo’s struggles to become integrated in American society.

In 1939, though, the question becomes impossible to avoid: What was in the water? Raymond Chandler was stripping his pulp stories for parts to build his first novel, The Big Sleep. John Fante was mining his misery for Ask the Dust. F. Scott Fitzgerald was trying to stay on the wagon in Encino and mapping out The Last Tycoon. And Nathanael West was inventing film noir by day—hacking away at RKO B pictures like The Stranger on the Third Floor—and writing his master- piece, The Day of the Locust, at night. On the studio lot, Victor Fleming was cleaning up his betters’ messes on both Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. Dalton Trumbo was working just as hard, climbing to the top of the screenwriter’s pay scale and tossing off the great antiwar novel Johnny Got His Gun between as- signments. And Orson Welles, like Los Angeles, was about to peak and didn’t know it. If only there were some record, some almanac of what it was like to walk those laughably walkable boulevards, to breathe that ludicrously per- fumed air. If only some benevolent patron had stepped in and commis- sioned a panorama of prewar Los Angeles, so that future generations could enjoy it vicariously—maybe even try to replicate the freakish atmo- spheric conditions that made those masterworks possible. In other words, if only there existed the book that you, like a sleeper hoping vainly to drag some treasure back from dreamland, now hold in your hand.

Matthew Edwin Elliott, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation Directed By: Professor David M. Wyatt, Department of English My dissertation is a literary and cultural history of Los Angeles from 1930-1950. I argue that this particular time and place——this era of Los Angeles history——provides a rich site for an exploration of American identity formations. It was during these years that Los Angeles experienced the extraordinary demographic and cultural changes that transformed the city from a place that in 1930 was still heralded by boosters as a small western outpost of white Americanism into what was by 1950 perhaps the nation’s most multicultural and multiracial city. Yet, this complex history of cultural change has been long invisible, for not only is Los Angeles among the most multicultural U.S. cities, it is also the most heavily mediated of places, and the pervasive images and myths of the city and its past constructed via Hollywood films and Chamber of Commerce postcards have functioned to erase this multicultural past. My study seeks to recover this hidden history of Los Angeles by examining the work of writers who represent and explore the lived complexities of existence in this dynamic setting. I focus on such writers as Chester Himes, Hisaye Yamamoto, and John Fante, who, I argue, not only portray something of the city’s lost past but also examine the process by which marginal voices are repressed and oppositional histories are erased. In addition, I discuss contemporary Los Angeles writers, including Walter Mosley, James Ellroy, and John Gregory Dunne.

In Ask the Dust (1939), Bandini, John Fante’s now legendary alter ego, dreams of becoming an accomplished writer with a respectable monetary income, literary fame, and socio-cultural recognition. Yet many decades of critical as well as commercial neglect had to go by, until, with the help of Charles Bukowski’s praising foreword to Ask the Dusk, republished by Black Sparrow Press in 1980, Fante and his Bandini were finally granted a (second) chance. Fante himself died in 1983, but his literary resurrection via Bukowski marked the beginning of his “second life” in Italy, as well as in France and Germany, where minor and major publishers put out a new wave of (re)translations of his – previously published or unpublished – fiction, leading to a veritable “Fantology” (Martino Marazzi, quoted in Mazzucchelli, 130).

Le sue opere ebbero il successo pieno soltanto dopo la sua morte. Furono tre le persone importanti nella sua carriera: dapprima il suo mentore H.L. Mencken che pubblicò, nell’agosto del 1932, Il suo racconto “Il chierichetto” sulla rivista “The American Mercury”. La seconda persona si perde nei meandri della letteratura ottocentesca russa. Lo stesso John Fante, infatti, nel suo capolavoro La confraternita dell’uva ci spiega che la passione per i libri è nata dall’amore per Dostoevskij. Spiega lo scrittore: “Dostoevskij mi cambiò. Mi rivoltò come un guanto. Capii che potevo respirare, potevo vedere orizzonti invisibili. Volevo pensare e sentirmi come Dostoevskij. Volevo scrivere”. La terza figura fondamentale nella carriera e, soprattutto, nella riscoperta di John Fante come scrittore è senz’atro Charles Bukowski, che, nel raccontare il loro incontro nella prefazione scritta per la nuova edizione di Chiedi alla Polvere del 1980 racconta come andarono le cose. Tempo prima, mentre stava scartabellando nella sezione narrativa della biblioteca di Los Angeles nella quale era uso andare, trovò una copia impolverata di “Chiedi alla polvere” un romanzo di uno scrittore che non conosceva. E fu amore a prima letta. Dopo quell’incontro fatale, Bukowski legge tutto quello che ha scritto Fante, finché non arriva il momento di incontrarlo davvero.
