Morris, Professor of Sociology Lexington, Kentucky 2020 Copyright © Henry James Zonio 2020 https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3091-7683 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION IT’S NOT JUST SUNDAY SCHOOL: YOUNG CHILDREN, RACE/ETHNICITY, AND GENDER IN THREE HOMOGENEOUS PROTESTANT SUNDAY SHOOLS Current sociological approaches to examining the lives of children approach children as active agents and participants in their socialization. Further, children are considered experts witnesses and interpreters of their own experiences. In the cases of race and gender socialization, interpretive reproduction has been used as a framework to examine how children construct and act on meanings of race and gender. While these interpretive studies illuminate how children interpret and reproduce meanings of race and gender, they do not explicate how children appropriate meanings from their cultural milieu. Consequently, these studies do not consider ways the larger culture enables and constrains children’s constructions of race and gender within their peer cultures. This dissertation explores the sources of material and symbolic culture that children use in their interactions about race and gender. To explore this process, I conducted a 15-month ethnographic study of early elementary Sunday school classrooms at three homogeneous churches: predominantly white, predominantly Latinx, and predominantly African American. In addition to field notes, I conducted group interviews of children from the churches as well as a qualitative content analysis of the Sunday school curricula from the churches with a focus on the presence (or lack thereof) of racial and gendered themes. The primary question of this study asks the extent to which larger culture, by way of religious educational curricular materials, simultaneously enables and constrains children’s interpretive and interactional constructions of race and gender. The findings in this study lead to three conclusions regarding the influence of the material and symbolic culture embedded in Sunday school curricula on children’s negotiations of race and gender in the Sunday school spaces they inhabit. The first conclusion is that Sunday school was constructed as a place to learn about the Bible and God, to the exclusion of all else. The second conclusion is that there was a null curriculum surrounding issues of race and gender in the Sunday school materials, which created an ideological vacuum that was filled by the dominant cultural ideologies of race and gender the children and Sunday school teachers brought with them to the Sunday school spaces. The third conclusion from this study is that the combination of an uncritical emphasis on teaching only the Bible with a null curriculum on race and gender, led to the construction and reproduction of a white patriarchal Christian imagination. Months later, we were packing up our family and moving to the San Francisco Bay Area marking the beginning of a whirlwind of transitions for our entire family that entailed multiple housing moves within California and Kentucky, familial role changes, job changes, tight budgets, and a lot of faith.     A Brief History of The Sunday School of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick, Maryland By Francis Reinberger Preface This brief history is prepared to honor the founder of our Sunday Church School, the Reverend Doctor David Frederick Schaeffer, and to pay tribute to all the men and women who, with devotion and love, have served as the officers and teachers of the Sunday Church School. Obviously, no attempt is made here to be exhaustive; that task will await the future historian. The writer is pleased to acknowledge his indebtedness to the late Abdel Ross Wentz, the author of The Lutheran Church of Frederick Maryland, 1738 – 1938. Where possible, the records of the Mathenian Association (1820- 1837) and later the Sunday School were examined. Included here as an appendix is the address of the writer on the occasion of the 160th Anniversary celebration of the Sunday Church School, held on April 20, 1980. Thus, on the threshhold of 1980- the 200th anniversary of the Sunday school- it seemed appro­ priate to suggest that there be some theological reflection on the Sunday school, as well as reminiscing over its past glories and triumphs. Several questions immediately surfaced as this suggestion began to take shape: Is there a theology of the Sunday school? If so, what are its key elements or distinctive features? How is the theology of the Sunday school related to Reformed theology? The writing of a theological critique of the Sunday school was undertaken with acer­ tain naivete, soon corrected by the existential impact of a sentence fragment from Martin Marty: "Theological work is hard . I" Attempting to write about the theology of the Sunday school is a little like trying to get hold of an octopus! Consider the first question, for example. In answering the question, "Is there a theology of the Sunday school?", one can reach out in several directions- almost simultaneously. One might hold tenaciously to the kind of statement found in the By-Laws of the World Sunday School Association. According to the revised By-Laws, only those persons holding the "Evangelical Faith" were admitted to membership.2 It could be argued that the theology of the Sunday school is "evangelical." But two problems arise almost immediately. First, the definition of "evangelical faith": there is no further explanation or description in the By-Laws. A recent histor­ ian of the Sunday school movement believes this formula was "generally understood as meaning a Trinitarian confession.''3 However, even if this definition is accepted, there is still a further concern.
