    IAAF Diamond League Media Information Guide 2013 www.diamondleague.com 1/37 INTRODUCTION With the creation of the IAAF Diamond League we set out to reinvent the one-day meeting structure of our sport, to bring clarity to the top tier circuit of international invitational competition which takes place outside the IAAF World Championships and Olympic Games. While there remain many challenges ahead if we are to make further advances and cement the IAAF Diamond League’s position as one of the world’s major sports series, we firmly believe that we have made an exceptionally good start in the first three years of the new competition structure. The IAAF Diamond League has a worldwide audience and a broadcasting reach undreamt by the Golden League series which preceded it. Thanks to a 14 meeting circuit which covers Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA, a competition programme that includes virtually the full spectrum of Olympic track and field disciplines, the guarantee of the world’s greatest athletes battling to win 8 Million Dollars in prize money, accumulating points season long to win their event’s Diamond Race Trophy, the IAAF Diamond League has captured the public’s imagination like no other non-championship athletics competition.     Wednesday, 12 May 2010 18 global champions, 4 Ambassadors added to New York field – IAAF Diamond League Allyson Felix crosses the line to become the only women to defend the IAAF World Championship 200m title twice (Getty Images) New York, USA - Recently crowned World Indoor champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica and American sprinter Allyson Felix are among the 18 Olympic and World champions and four IAAF Diamond League Ambassadors added to the line-up of athletes slated to compete at the adidas Grand Prix on Saturday, 12 June . The adidas Grand Prix, held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, will be the fifth stop on the inaugural 14-meet, international IAAF Diamond League circuit. In addition to Allyson Felix in the women’s 200 metres, other IAAF Diamond League Ambassadors added to the field include Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen and Finland’s Tero Pitkämäki in the men’s Javelin Throw and Valerie Vili of New Zealand in the women’s Shot Put. The other two ambassadors already announced for the New York meeting are Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt and Australian Pole Vault king Steve Hooker . A total of 32 Olympians from 16 different countries have been announced. 200m: Two-time Olympic champion vs three-time World champion Campbell-Brown and Felix will meet at 200m for the first time on U.S. soil. The two have raced eight times at the distance with Felix holding the 6-2 advantage. However, both of Campbell-Brown’s victories came in Olympic finals. “New York is one of those cities you just love to compete in; after all, it is the ‘world capital,’” Campbell-Brown said.

Now in its 10th year, the 2019 series will be the first that will conclude just weeks before a global championships. Athletes earn points in the first 12 meetings to qualify for two finals. As part of the overall US$8million in prize money available across the series, the finals offer a prize purse of US$3.2 million. $100,000 is at stake in each of the 32 Diamond disciplines, including $50,000 for each winner along with a stunning Diamond Trophy and a wildcard entry to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019. In 2018, 360 million viewers from across 161 countries spanning all six continents worldwide watched the world’s top athletes compete in the IAAF Diamond League, an increase of about 78 million on the previous year. Further emphasising the IAAF Diamond League’s global credentials, athletes from 83 different countries took part in the 2018 season, with 34 of them producing winners across the series. The 2019 IAAF Diamond League – which takes place in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America – will set the scene for the world’s third-largest sporting event.
