The Mount Airy Bottom Dollar has been spared plans by its parent company in a recent announcement that many Bottom Dollar and Food Lion stores will be closing, but the local facility will be converted to a Food Lion later this year. The parent company of Food Lion and Bot- tom Dollar, Belgian-based Delhaize America, announced on Thursday it would be closing more than 100 stores nationwide, eliminating nearly 5,000 jobs. Locally, the company said it has no plans to close any stores, although the Bottom Dollar presence will disappear from Mount Airy, as it will throughout most of the Southeast, when the store on West Pine Street is converted to a Food Lion. “Conversions will begin immediately, all stores should be converted by year-end,” said Christy Phillips-Brown, a corporate spokes- person for Food Lion. Employees there learned of the plans late Wednesday night, she said. “We believe Food Lion can meet the needs of consumers in the market, and it will strength- en the presence of Food Lion in the area,” she said of the local change. There are no plans to alter operations of the existing Food Lion stores in the area. The move is part of a company-wide re- structuring, with 113 Food Lion and a half- dozen Bottom Dollar stores being shuttered, including at least four in North Carolina, while another 22 Bottom Dollar stores will be con- verted to Food Lions. She said those stores were targeted for closure because they were “under-performing.” She said the company will focus on the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia markets for Bottom Dollar, while concentrat- ing on the Food Lion brand elsewhere.
