They built their dream house in the mid-1950s and incorporated built-in display cases for their collection. By the time the museum was founded in 1997 every room in their home was filled with exhibit cases full of rocks, minerals, gems, fossils, and meteorites. One of the many impressive galleries is the Dennis and Mary Murphy Petrified wood gallery, which houses hundreds of petrified woods all cut and polished by Dennis Murphy. Every rock on the shelf is a page from a scrapbook with a story of how it formed in the earth, how it was mined or collected, and how it made its way to the Rice Museum. When you visit the museum, be sure to talk to the friendly and knowledgably staff and ask lots of questions. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2015 the museum became an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, one of only three in Oregon.
