The Venue The Legacy of the Rice Museum 1930s. They built their dream house in the mid-1950s and incorporated built-in display cases for their collection. By the time the museum was founded in 1997 every room in their home was filled with exhibit cases full of rocks, minerals, gems, fossils, and meteorites. One of the many impressive galleries is the Dennis and Mary Murphy Petrified wood gallery, which houses hundreds of petrified woods all cut and polished by Dennis Murphy. Every rock on the shelf is a page from a scrapbook with a story of how it formed in the earth, how it was mined or collected, and how it made its way to the Rice Museum. When you visit the museum, be sure to talk to the friendly and knowledgably staff and ask lots of questions. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2015 the museum became an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, one of only three in Oregon. The Rice Museum does not just house rocks, it uses its exhibits and collections for many diverse STEM programs through tours and events at the museum and Many wonderful surprises await visitors to the Rice Museum. The Hillsboro Chamber’s Farm Fresh event began as a way to celebrate Hillsboro’s Heritage, and its agricultural roots, with a farm-to-fork style dinner. With the 5th annual event approaching, the mission of this event has not changed and is still a Hillsboro Chamber favorite, connecting the long standing farm industry in the community with the next generation of Hillsboro residents, businesses, and local foodies looking to enjoy a relaxing evening in the open air.

Starting in 2014, in an effort to re-establish ties with the agricultural community, the Hillsboro Chamber announced a new community event: “Farm Fresh - Hillsboro’s Heritage”. The inaugural event was held at Jossy Farms’ Peach Orchard in Hillsboro to celebrate the community’s agriculture roots with a modern twist - pairing each course of the dinner with wines from throughout Washington County.

In 2015, the second annual Farm Fresh Dinner was held at Unger Farms featuring their own Unger Berries. Many of the guests enjoyed the intimate setting and attention to detail; it was the perfect combination of sweet yet tart!

Summer of 2016 provided an opportunity to dine on the very land that the apple orchard took root. Oregon Heritage Farms preserved, froze, and sauced a variation of their famous apples for guests to enjoy a plethora of all seasons!

Last year, the hazelnuts of Denfeld Packing and Laurel Foods were highlighted in every course. Dining under the shade of 80-year-old lush hazelnut trees and adding some friendly competition to the evening made the fourth annual Farm Fresh Dinner an unforgettable evening.

From peaches to berries and apples to hazelnuts, Farm Fresh guests have enjoyed the best ingredients that the Hillsboro farm industry has to offer. And this year will be no different! While dining on the beautiful grounds of the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals, the 5th Annual Kaiser Permanente’s Farm Fresh Dinner will showcase local ingredients with the featured ingredient of honey in every course from the cocktails to dessert. Mammograms wherever you are Tuality Healthcare’s Mobile Mammography brings state-of-the-art screening technology right to you. In today’s hectic world, finding time for a mammogram can be difficult. That’s what makes Tuality Healthcare’s Mobile Mammography service so special. This unique Mobile Mammography vehicle, the only one of its kind in Oregon, provides a fast and effective alternative for you to receive your regular mammogram, and brings these life-saving services right to your location. The American Cancer Society reports that regular mammograms can help find breast cancer at an early stage, before physical symptoms (such as lumps) develop, when treatment is most successful. “Screening mammography is still our number one tool for detecting breast cancers at the earliest stage,” notes Mary Lucas Koach, R.T. (R)(M), CN-BI, Manager of Tuality Breast Health Services. “When we are able to detect breast cancer earlier, we are able to give patients more options for successful treatments. This is why our mobile program is so important in our communities—we’re offering screening mammography in areas where women may not be able to easily access it.” The vehicle will come directly to your business or gathering at no charge to the hosting facility as long as at least 15 women are interested in receiving mammograms, or, individual women can simply call to find out about the upcoming Mobile Mammography schedule and make appointments at locations and times that fit their busy schedules. For more information, contact 503-681-4108 or [email protected]. Join the Tuality Healthcare Foundation ‘On the Road to Prevention’ as they seek to raise funds for a new mobile mammography vehicle that can travel to an expanded area, including rural Oregon where many women face barriers to health care. The Hillsboro Chamber believes in the values underlying ATHENA International’s philosophy of incorporating the talent and expertise of women into the leadership of our businesses, our communities and our government. The spirit of the ATHENA Award® Program is captured in a quotation from Plato, “What is honored in a country will be cultivated there.” By honoring exceptional leaders, others will be encouraged to excel.

Submit your nomination by August 31, 2018 – nomination form can be found online at https://hillsborochamberor.com/athena_awards_noms/

Leadership Hillsboro 2018-19 will begin a new class year mid-September. This class of 30 local business leaders will be exploring Hillsboro from the inside out as they take a look at every aspect of our city, what are the issues, who is working on them currently and how they can get involved on a deeper level. If you are looking for how you can make a difference in Hillsboro, Leadership just might be the right choice for you! The class only holds 30 people and once those spots are full, you will have to wait another year to join. Contact Julie Ames at [email protected] if you are interested in this amazing year-long program.
