COMPENDIUM OF PROCEEDINGS Conference #7, Panaji, Goa, April 6th, 2017 National Conference Series on Sports for Employment Conference 7: Panaji, Goa on April 6th 2017 Participants Profile: Sports academies and clubs, schools, coaches, adventure sports practitioners and operators and representatives from the government. Organisers: SPEFL-SC, Tanjun NAUKRIS Consortium, Don Bosco College, Panjim, Goa. Venue: Auditorium, Don Bosco College Background The sport industry today is not only exciting but it is a lucrative and continually growing segment of the entertainment, arts, and recreation industry. As a global industry that attracts passionate fans, spectators and players throughout the world, sports have an enormous impact on people’s lives through education, diplomacy, personal achievement, business and overall entertainment. It is estimated that the sports industry globally generates between $400 and $425 billion in revenue annually. Many more billions are generated through related industries such as hospitality, event management, and fitness/recreation. Segments of the sports industry offer additional avenues for varying career paths. For example, sports marketing might include a number of areas from product placement, celebrity endorsement, sponsorship sales, merchandising, corporate relations, sales activation, and a host of other activities. Numerous opportunities and resources exist in both the public and private sector for anyone looking to break into this dynamic field. In the Indian context, it may already be apparent that India is moving out of the shadows and beginning to take noticeable steps into the sports arena. However there is an absence of support system in sports i.e. right kind of coaches, academy, event managers, sports goods manufacturers, infrastructure managers and developers, administrators, sports scientist, physiotherapists, sponsorship experts and so on.

FOUND IN TRANSLATION FOUND IN TRANSLATIONPHOTOGRAPHED BY MANISH SAMPAT Could it be that the hopes of Indian football rest on the shoulders of its foreign players? Vivek Menezes investigates N A FREEZING March morning in the Fergana Valley in eastern Uzbekistan, the champion team of Neftchi Football Club boarded a plane to Tashkent, then connected on another long flight to New Delhi, Ofollowed by a final hop to Goa. Less than 24 hours after arriving into the Indian heat, coach Yuri Sarkisyan led his players on to the floodlit pitch at Fatorda Stadium outside Margao, to play against Salgaocar Sports Club in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup. One of the storied teams of Indian football, Salgaocar had recently achieved impressive results under the guid- ance of its excitable Moroccan coach, Karim Bencherifa. Last year, they won the national I-League. But the AFC Cup presented another level of competition, against proven winners from 14 different countries: an Indian team had yet to win a single match in the Cup. As the teams warmed up, I observed an unmistakable air of res- ignation amid the crowd. The Goan fans clearly expected a drubbing. The early minutes of the game did nothing to change that expectation: thick-legged Uzbek defenders walled off their territory, and the deft Neftchi mid-field dominated possession easily. In the 25th minute, Atabek Isroilov headed home the game’s first goal, and triumphant Rus- sian cheers rang through the night air. But standing at the sidelines, I noticed the Indian team exchanging purpose- ful nods. Later, after the game, Salgaocar’s attacking mid- fielder Ryuji Sueoka would tell me that it was a moment of mutual understanding.

  • The Catholic Church and Football in Goa, 1883-1951 James Mills University of Strathclyde Glasgow, Scotland
Colonialism, Christians and Sport: The Catholic Church and Football in Goa, 1883-1951 James Mills University of Strathclyde Glasgow, Scotland Abstract The chapter uses the development of football in Goa, the Portuguese colony in India until 1961, as a case study with which to critique existing histories of sport and colonialism. The start point of the article is that when taken together existing studies of football in particular, and to an extent sport in general, in colonial contexts bear a range of similarities. Broadly speaking a model can be drawn from them, one in which Christian missionary activity and colonial government projects act to introduce and encourage western sports among colonised populations who then eventually adopt and adapt the games. The Goa example offers a fresh perspective as it argues that while elements of the story of football there are familiar from these other studies, the role of indigenous agents in propagating the game at its earliest stages is crucial to understanding how the sport took off and became embedded in local society and culture. Introduction A range of studies of sport in colonial contexts that have been published over the last decade or so point to the importance of Christian missionaries in introducing modern games and sporting activities to non-western societies. J.A. Mangan’s oft-repeated publications on the mission schools in India are perhaps the best known of those that have examined the role of Western Christians in colonial contexts. In his most recent examination of the issue he returned to the examples of Theodore Leighton Pennell and Cecil Earle Tyndale-Biscoe in the North West Frontier Provinces and Kashmir respectively.1 The North West Frontier region had a pre-existing indigenous interest in physical preparation for martial pursuits that manifested in displays of ‘tent- pegging’.
